The visitation panel to the Taraba State University, Jalingo has indicted the current Vice Chancellor Professor Sunday Bako of embezzlement of funds meant for the Development of the institution and recommended appropriate sanctions for some infractions under its current leadership.
The Panel in its report noted that the current management of the University had acted inappropriately in many areas particularly how the Management failed to Account for N33 millions Naira running cost and how the Staff salary rose astronomically to N322 Millions Naira.
Submitting the report of the Panel toTaraba State Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas, its Chairman professor Josiah Sabo Kente disclosed that the mismanagement of the finances of the University led to the inability of the current Management to pay salaries.
The Panel also observed that the management of the University embarked on massive recruitment of staff and promotion exercises without due approval of the Governing Council or the Visitor to the University.
The report noted that the salary bill of the University increased from N234 Million as at March 2022 to over N322 Million Naira as at December 2023 citing several infractions including inappropriate signing of minutes of the Council by the Vice Chancellor and Registrar instead of Chairman of Council.
The report also faulted the collection of N1.5 billion Naira unauthorised loan from Zenith Bank Plc which was revalidated for another 1.5billion in March, 2022.
The Chairman further said from March, 2022 to December, 2022 the management of University could not retired over ₦38 Million imprest
and recommended that all Principal Officers, Deans, Directors, Head of Departments, and Unit Heads who had collected imprest on monthly basis without retirement should refund the money back.
