Today’s Headlines: I’m Father Of Frustrated Youths In Nigeria — Obasanjo; FG’s No-Work-No-Pay Legal Deephenominal studio.opera.com I’m Father Of Frustrated Youths In Nigeria — Obasanjo Photo Credit: Daily Trust Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo has described himself as the father of frustrated youths in Nigeria. During a chat with veteran singer Charly Boy, the ex-president stated that the solution to the problems in Nigeria is in the hands of the youths. In a video posted by the singer-turned-actor, Obasanjo stated that for Nigeria to be a better country, the youths need to change the nation’s leadership. He said in parts, “I am the father of frustrated youths in Nigeria. That we are poor and frustrated is not the fault of God. It is the choice of our leaders and if we are going to change that situation, the youths have to change leadership. Pure and simple. There is nobody who will do it other than the youths.” FG’s No-Work-No-Pay Legal – Lawyers Photo Credit: Daily Trust Some lawyers have explained that the no-work-no-pay pronouncement of the federal government against striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is legal. The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, on Thursday, during the deadlocked federal government and ASUU meeting, said workers would lose their salaries for the period they were on strike. But reacting in an interview with Daily Trust Saturday, ASUU president, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, said the lecturers would not process the outstanding two sets of students now waiting for admission in the universities if their arrears were not paid after the strike. However, some lawyers who reacted to the federal government’s comment, said the no-work-no-pay comment was a valid rule and is contained in the Trade Union Act, 2005. Section 43(1) (a) reads: “Where any worker takes part in a strike, he shall not be entitled to any wage or other remunerations for the period of the strike, and any such period shall not count for the purpose of reckoning the period of continuous employment, and all rights dependent on the continuity of employment shall be prejudicially affected accordingly.” Yusuf Buhari, a lawyer, said that even if there was no such law, in every employment, there must be an agreement that spells out the terms. “If you are going on strike, there must be a corresponding right to withhold your salaries. Such agreements are legal and binding in law,” he said. Also, Hamid Ajibola Jimoh submitted that the provision of section 43(1)(a) and (b) of the Trade Union Act does not criminalise strike but establishes that the striking workers would not be entitled to pay. Similarly, E.M.D. Umukoro said the Trade Union Act remained the enabling law until “it is repealed or struck down by the courts.” Obi Group Hails Ozigbo, Woos Other politicians Photo Credit: Punch Newspapers The Peter Obi Support Network has hailed the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2021 Anambra State governorship election, Mr Valentine Ozigbo, for joining “Obidient Movement”, describing the development as long overdue. In a statement on Saturday, Director of Strategic Communication of the Labour Party presidential candidate, Onwuasoanya Jones, said Ozigbo’s formal endorsement of the Peter Obi’s candidacy showed that he was a progressive patriot with passion for a better and working Nigeria. Jones said the group was not surprised by the move. He urged other patriots to take a cue from Ozigbo and join the “Obidient” campaign in order to steer the country away from imminent disaster. The statement read, “He is a patriotic Nigerian who is passionate about building a working, progressive and a united nation, and it is not in any way a surprise that he has made his declaration to join the most popular and most promising people’s movement in the history of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic politics. “We have always known that his heart has been with this movement and we welcome him with joy and assure him of our absolute cooperation in ensuring that this movement is piloted to success for the benefit of all Nigerians. “This is not the time to sit on the fence, this is a time for every true Nigerian and lover of progress to take a stand with the people and participate actively in salvaging the fate of our dear nation. “Like Chief Valentine Ozigbo, many other Nigerian patriots have put Nigeria’s interest above their personal political and pecuniary interests, by aligning with the best presidential candidate in this election, and it is our hope as an organisation that more political leaders and statesmen will break off the shackles of partisanship and join in the mission to save our nation.” Gunmen Attack Oyetola’s Wife Convoy, Security Personnel Injured Photo Credit: P.M.
