Borno State governor, Prof Babagana Umara Zulum, has assented to the state’s Criminal Justice Administration Laws 2023, Amendment Bill that prescribed seven years imprisonment to anyone guilty of political thuggery.

The governor assented to the bill alongside eight other bills passed by the State House of Assembly at the government house, on Wednesday in Damaturu.

Zulum said it was a proactive measure taken to curtail the increase in number of reported cases of raping and political thuggery in the state.

“Therefore, those found involved in political thuggery risk seven years imprisonment, and their sponsors will not go unpunished,” he said.

He noted that within the last four years, the Executive had sent over 80 bills to both the 9th and 10th Assembly.

Zulum commended the state assembly for the cordial working relationship accorded to him as the governor of the state.

Presenting the bills for assent, the Speaker, Abdulkarim Lawan, said, “The House has received a total of nine bills among which three of the bills were from the 9th Assembly, while six bills were from the 10th Assembly. All these bills were passed by the 10th Assembly”.

He said in the 9th Assembly, the House received a total of 67 bills among which 64 bills were passed, while the remaining three bills were passed by the 10th Assembly.

Other bills assented to are the Borno State Penal Code Law, the Borno State Secondary Education Board, Borno State Investment Protection Bill, and Borno State Social Investment Bill.

They also included Borno Primary Healthcare Development Bill, Borno State Drugs and other Medical Consumable Bills, Borno State Livestock Management Bill, and the Borno Local Government Amendment Bill 2023.
