A planned congress meeting by the Fish Marketers and Producers Forum Association aimed at electing new executives was disrupted today by security operatives.

The association had called for the meeting to address concerns about the alleged misappropriation of funds by the current executive members, who they claim have overstayed their term by 21 years, exceeding the limit set by the association’s constitution.

In a letter obtained by our reporter, the association duly informed the police, the Department of State Security, Civil Defence and the State Security Service of their planned congress meeting.

Abdullahi Zubairu, a member of the association, recounted the events, stating, that ‘this morning, as we converged at the market for our congress meeting, security operatives including the Police, DSS, SSS, and Civil Defence stormed the venue and began removing our chairs while threatening us with teargas.’

‘To our surprise, the DPO of the Ibrahim Tayo Police Station along with over 200 police officers raided the market and fired teargas,’ Zubairu added.

ASP Nahum Daso Kenneth, the Police spokesman, confirmed the intervention in a statement.

He asserted that the police presence was to safeguard lives and property and enforce a court order prohibiting the unlawful gathering.

More details on the situation are expected to be released soon.
