Supreme Court dismisses PDP suit against Tinubu, Shettima

0

The Supreme Court has given a judicial seal of approval for the inauguration of President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President-elect Kashim Shettima.

The Court on Friday dismissed the suit by the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, seeking their disqualification from the 2023 presidential election.

The Apex Court held that the PDP’s suit praying disqualification of Tinubu and Shettima was grossly lacking in merit and dismissed it.

Justice Adamu Jauro who delivered the lead judgment slammed a fine of N2 million on PDP for poke nosing into the internal affairs of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the conduct of its primary elections and nomination of its candidates.

Justice Jauro agreed with Tinubu’s lawyer, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, that PDP acted as busy body and meddlesome interloper in the ways and manners it dabbled into APC’s affairs unjustly.

The Apex Court held that apart from the fact that PDP lacked requisite jurisdiction to institute the suit, the party also failed to provide scintilla of evidence that Shetima engaged in double nomination.

The claim of PDP on the alleged double nomination of the Vice President-elect was described as most unfortunate and a clear deliberate mischief to mislead the Court and the country.

The Supreme Court also agreed with Fagbemi that no matter the pains of PDP on how APC conducted its primary election and nominated its candidates, PDP must remain onlooker.

“It is abundantly clear that the Appellant (PDP) in the totality of its position in the instant case, is peeping and poke nosing into the affairs of another party as a busy body and meddlesome interloper,” he said.

The Court held that the action of PDP was painful because it used the social media to set a booby trap for the Supreme Court to blackmail it.

It said this is most unfortunate, unwarranted and uncalled for.

Insecurity: Defend yourselves within ambits of law – COCIN urges Christians

0

The Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) has described as ‘troubling’ the recent attacks in some communities of Plateau State and Southern Kaduna, primarily targeting Christians, their communities, and their worship places.

following the recent development, COCIN has urged Christians in such communities to defend themselves within the ambit of the law, reminding them to be vigilant of unscrupulous movements.

The Church also said the renewed attacks on communities pose a serious threat to peaceful co-existence amongst the citizenry, hence the need for urgent action by relevant authorities.

This is according to the President of COCIN, Rev. Amos Mohzo, during the Church’s 103rd General Church Council meeting at its headquarters in Jos the Plateau State Capital.

Mohzo said, “It is with deep concern that I address the issue of insecurity in our beloved nation. The incessant killings, kidnappings, and destruction of lives and property by terrorists in communities across Nigeria, particularly in Southern Kaduna, Bokkos, Mangu, Gindiri, Panyam, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, in Plateau State, and other states, are a source of great distress for all of us.

“It is particularly troubling that these attacks primarily aim at Christians, their communities, and their worship places. It is the government’s responsibility to ensure the safety and security of all citizens, regardless of their religion, ethnicity, or any other factor.

“Our hope has been dashed with the recent attack on some communities in Mangu Local Government, where many innocent citizens were brutally butchered and churches/houses burnt to ashes.

According to him, “This is a calculated attack, and we condemn it in its totality. While we appreciate the efforts of the security operatives on the Plateau, we call upon the Federal Government to intervene immediately.

“This re-emergence of attacks on our communities has posed a serious concern to our peaceful co-existence on the Plateau, and urgent action must be taken to address this issue.

“I urge the Christian communities not to relent in self-defence within the ambit of the law and be vigilant of unscrupulous movements, he maintained.

“Some groups of people have declared war of genocide on us, and they have eaten deep into our communities.

“The way forward is for the government to take decisive action to end these attacks and bring the perpetrators to justice”,

“I have appealed to the government at some fora to take decisive steps. The security forces must be adequately equipped and trained to deal with the threat posed by these terrorists. Intelligence gathering and sharing must also be improved to prevent attacks before they occur.

“Furthermore, the government must address the root causes of these attacks, including the issue of land grabbing by Fulani terrorists, and take steps to ensure peaceful coexistence between all Nigerian communities despite religious differences”, Mohzo appealed.

He advised citizens to be vigilant, by reporting suspicious activities to the authorities, and promoting peaceful coexistence in their various communities.

“As we apply our theme for the year, ‘Seeking the Peace of the Land’ Jeremiah 29:7. We must work together as a nation to address this issue and ensure that Nigeria is a safe and secure place for all its citizens.

“I appeal to this General Church Council to resolve to set apart three days (2nd to 4th June 2023) for fasting and prayers throughout the denomination against the incessant killings and destruction of property in the North and Plateau State in particular.

“If this council accepts this submission, the Vice President and the General Secretary should prepare a program for the three days.

“As a denomination, we are affected mainly by the Fulani terrorists’ attacks and land grabbing. This is the time to seek the face of God to intervene”, he stressed.

Atiku wins as court upholds consolidation of petitions against Tinubu’s election

0

The Presidential Election Petition Court, PEPC has upheld the position of the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, Atiku Abubakar on the consolidation of the three petitions challenging the qualifications and declaration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner of the February 25 presidential election.

The Court in the pre-hearing session report presented on Tuesday by Justice Stephen Jonah Ada announced the consolidation of the three petitions instituted by Atiku, Peter Obi of the Labour Party LP and the Allied People’s Movement APM.

The Court agreed with Atiku’s lawyers that given the time-bound nature of the petitions, especially for expeditious hearing purposes, it was proper and appropriate to merge them in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022.

Justice Ada while announcing the consolidation said the Court took the decision because the three petitions are related to the same election and same declaration of results.

Tinubu had vehemently opposed the consolidation move on the ground that the interest of justice would not be met.

But Atiku and PDP who saw the objection to consolidation as a ploy to delay quick disposal of the three petitions, had prayed the Court to adopt the move to be able to do substantial justice to their respective grievances against Tinubu’s election.

Meanwhile, the Court has given Atiku and PDP three weeks within which to argue their complaints against the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC on the alleged irregularities in the conduct of the presidential election.

They are also to, within the period present their objections against the qualifications of Tinubu for the election and his subsequent return as winner of the 2023 presidential poll.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Court, Justice Haruna Simon Tsammani has fixed May 30 for a full blown hearing of the three petitions.

Soldiers slap ATBU ASUU chair, Inuwa, harass security man

Some men, said to be soldiers in mufti, numbering about five, on Monday night allegedly assaulted the chairman of the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU), Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, branch, Dr Ibrahim Inuwa, and harassed one of the university’s security personnel.

It was learnt that the soldiers, who were in two vehicles, wanted to enter the university but were prevented by one of the school’s security personnel manning the main gate because their vehicles had tinted glasses.

Despite this, the soldiers were said to have forced their way into the university premises but the lone security man at the gate remained adamant, leading to his harassment by the soldiers.

MAIDAWAAREWA learnt that it was while harassing the security man that Inuwa arrived at the scene and enquired about what happened, only for the soldiers to attack him.

The situation almost degenerated into a major crisis as students of the institution, on learning about the harassment of the ASUU chairman, demanded that the soldiers be handed over to them to be “disciplined”.

The students locked the two gates leading to the institution and threw stones and other objects at the Toyota Camry and Toyota Corolla the soldiers drove and parked by the barricade of the exit gate.

They eventually destroyed the windscreens and the glasses, the lights and deflated the tyres of the two vehicles.

Narrating what happened to journalists, Inuwa explained that he was on his way out of the school when he saw the soldiers harassing the security man on duty at the gate and he stopped to know what was happening.

According to him, when he approached the soldiers and asked what was happening, they asked who he was and one of then abused him, saying he was stupid and started shoving him and eventually slapped him three times.

“Just this (Monday) night, some few minutes after 8 o’clock, I was going out of the university and I saw a convoy of two vehicles, they were busy arguing and harassing the security man on duty.

“At that time, most of the security men were praying in a mosque by the gate. So I had to stop because it is my responsibility as the chairman of the Union.

“And I asked our security man in Hausa what was happening. The next thing, these guys in these two vehicles started asking me arrogantly ‘who are you?’ And I told them ‘no, I want to know what happened’. One of them said, ‘you’re very stupid! Do you know who we are? You’re very stupid!’

“I told them that this is a university and we have our rules and the next thing, they started shoving me, then one of them went to the extreme and slapped me three consecutive times.

“I called their attention that what they have done is wrong and I told them they would regret it. You can even see the prints of the slaps on my face,” Inuwa explained.

He added that, “they said again that I was stupid because I was still talking. They were hitting me that I should keep quiet. It was at that point that the number of security men increased, so we instructed them to block the gate because we must know their identity.

“They are claiming that they are military guys but to give us their details is now a problem. They were on mufti and they forced their way into the university. Our Union is now aware of the incident and we need their details to write to let the Chief of Army Staff know about it.”

The ASUU chairman lamented that what the soldiers did was to break the institution’s protocol, saying that no one could break the military protocols like the soldiers did to the university.

He added that senior army officers who later arrived at the scene sought to take the five soldiers away to handle the matter in their own ways.

Also speaking with journalists, the National Internal Auditor of ASUU, Adamu Babayo, said he was at home when he was informed that some soldiers came to the school and slapped the union branch chairman.

He said the school’s security man was right to have prevented the soldiers from entering the institution as it has its rule of banning vehicles with tinted glasses from entering its campus.

According to him, “when I got to the entrance gate, I inquired about what was going on. While the security man there alone was trying to tell them that they cannot go in, they were forcing their way into the campus.

“Luckily, the ASUU chairman was going out and he demanded to know what was going on. Then these military boys harassed the chairman to the extend that they even slapped him.

“Our students came at the gate trying to lynch the military boys. So the chairman said they should lock the gate, so that they don’t go out and the students will lynch them.”

The four were arrested by the police at Ijagunre village, Imeko-Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Buhari inaugurates Dangote refinery, says game changer for Nigeria’s economy

President Muhammadu Buhari has inaugurated the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.

On Monday, Femi Adesina, Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, Buhari, described the feat as a significant milestone for Nigeria’s economy and a game changer for the downstream petroleum products market in the African region.

He said the refinery would boost Nigeria’s ability to achieve self-sufficiency in refined petroleum products and save the country’s revenue spent on exportation.

“This mega industry we commissioned today is a clear example of what can be achieved when entrepreneurs are encouraged and supported and when an enabling environment is created for investments and businesses to thrive”.

He reiterated that Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s successor would sustain the positive achievements.

“I am happy to leave our economy in very competent hands,” he said.

Buhari commended Aliko Dangote’s foresight in bringing the refinery to life.

During the commissioning, Alhaji Aliko Dangote said: “Once our plant is fully on stream, we expect that at least 40% of the capacity will be available for export”.
