20yrs Daughter sues father for attempted forced marriage

0

A woman identified as Fatima has reportedly dragged her father to a Shari’a Court sitting in Kaduna State for forcing her to marry a stranger.

The 20-year-old Fatima told the court that she had someone she loved but her father, Aliyu Muhammad had threatened to take her to the village and marry her off.

Fatima’s counsel, Malam Bulama also told the court that his client didn’t file a suit against her father out of disrespect for him.

Bulama said: “The father wants my client to marry a man in their village in Niger state. Right now, she’s living in her aunty’s house because he threatened to take her to the village and marry her off.”

Also on his part, Fatima’s father, Aliyu Muhammad said his late parents chose the man for his daughter before their death and he had to respect their wishes.

“I married my 6 daughters off in the village and they are doing well. Fatima’s mother is the brain behind her stubbornness. I need permission to consult with my people over this matter,” he said.

The judge, Isiyaku Abdulrahman, held that a father under the Shari’a law, has the right to choose a husband for his daughter.

He however noted that forced marriage is not encouraged.

“You are her father, therefore you should allow her to present the person she wants to marry and if you are pleased with his religion and character, you allow her to get married,” the court held.

The Presidential Election Tribunal will begin hearing of the petitions filed before it by aggrieved opposition parties against the election of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu today, Monday May 8.

Recall that following the declaration of Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as winner of the February 25 presidential poll, some candidates who were defeated in the race had approached the court to seek redress, alleging that the election was rigged in favour of the ruling party.

It can be recalls that Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, his Labour Party counterpart, Peter Obi and others had approached the tribunal to upturn Tinubu’s victory on the grounds of substantial non-compliance with the provisions of the Constitution, the Electoral Act and the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for the conduct of the poll.

Atiku, a former vice president, who hinged his petition on five grounds, is asking the court to order the electoral body to conduct a fresh election following alleged irregularities at polling units during the presidential poll.

Atiku and his party are saying that Tinubu was declared the winner of the election when all results and accreditation data from polling units were yet to be transmitted and uploaded by INEC.

Obi, a former Anambra governor is also alleging various irregularities in the conduct of the election, insisting that Tinubu and his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima, were not qualified to contest.

Obi also said that Tinubu failed to win the majority of lawful votes and was unable to garner one-quarter of votes in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

MAIDAWAAREWA reports that during the pre-hearing session today, the Court is expected to provide a full timetable for hearing the substantive petitions filed against the President-elect at the election tribunal.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo had alleged that some foreign lawyers had been flown into the country to stop Tinubu’s inauguration on May 29.

Also, a chieftain of the ruling party, Femi Fani-Kayode alleged in a tweet that former president, Olusegun Obasanjo contracted foreign lawyers for Peter Obi.

In a jeering tweet, the former Aviation Minister captioned a video, “when Peter heard that the Russian lawyer that OBJ had procured for him to represent him at the Election Petition Tribunal was no longer coming. Poor, tired soul! Pls pray for him”.

However, Dr Yunusa Salisu Tanko, Chief Spokesperson, LP presidential campaign council in the already concluded election told Journalist on Sunday that members of Obi’s legal team are all Nigerians.

He said, “As far as I know, the lawyers are all Nigerians, I have not seen any foreign lawyer in the legal team.”

He expressed optimism at the outcome of the process, insisting that the party’s candidate would be making presentations that cannot be faulted.

“From what we are presenting to the court, we are very optimistic that they cannot find fault in our presentation”, he added.

The Vigilante in an operation to flush out bandits in Gassol and Bali Local Governments which Commence the operation since early last year arrested and executed two ‘Bokolo’ Fulani, identified as Shehu Alhaji Umaru and his brother Debbu Alhaji Umaru at their settlement at Kauyen Sa’idu Village area on the midnight of Saturday as well as Alhaji Mustafa Adamu popularly known as Sarkin Shanu in Sansani town on Sunday morning for their alleged involvement in banditry, Kidnapping and Armed robbery.

The Vigilante who arrived Sansani at about 11pm on Saturday night camped at Sansani Primary School for two days without informing the Jankada of Sansani Chiefdom Abdulmutallib Nuhu Muhammed Bello and not talked to any of the Village or Ward heads in the Chiefdom.

Speaking to maidawaarewa reporter in Jalingo Abdulmutallib, the Jankada of Sansani Chiefdom said “During their two days stay at Sansani Primary School non of them came to me so I am not in anyway in the picture of their operations what I only know is that Last year traditional rulers in Gassol and Bali Local Governments were summoned for a meeting with His Excellency the Executive Governor of Taraba State Arc. Darius Dickson Ishaku where we were mandated to form a strong Vigilante group to fight the menace of all types of criminalities in the two Local Governments to flush out bandits in the communities the operation started since last year”.

Abdulmutallib also said “in August last year, the same Vigilante who has the mandate of the State Government entered Gwiwan Kogi, one of the Village areas in Sansani Chiefdom and killed two Bokolo Fulani suspected bandits without coming to me or sending anyone to inform me, but when I learned of the operation I sent the leader of the Vigilante group in Sansani Chiefdom, Bala Inusa who was later killed by bandits to go and tell the Vigilante to leave my Chiefdom but before he arrived the Bokolo settlement and the Vigilante had already left but he met them on the way at kufayi and told them my message.”

The Jankada said to his astonishment “when the Stakeholders Peace Committee in Gassol one Constituency headed by Senator Dahiru Bako heard of my message to the Vigilante they called me for a meeting in the house of the Senator in Jalingo and accused me of hiding bandits in my domain by showing my anger that the Vigilante entered my domain and carried out operation without my knowledge” “That’s why when the second group of the Vigilante visited this time around and camped at Sansani Primary school without informing me I decided to keep mute so that I Will not be accused again for any wrong doing as they carried out their operation for two days and left Sansani on monday”.

He said, however, the leaders of the Vigilante headed by one Riga and Julde came to his palace on Monday morning after completing their operation and were about to depart and asked him to gather his subjects because they learned that the people were grumbling about their operation and the killing of the the three suspected bandits for them to explain to them and I called my Village and Ward heads, the relations of the executed suspects and his subjects who came in their numbers.

“The Commander of the Vigilante explained to the gathering why they arrested and executed the trio that they carried out similar operations in seven locations in Gassol and Bali Local Governments and the three persons were mentioned as part of the gang of bandits operating in the two Local Governments and they investigated them thoroughly and confirmed their involvement in most of the bandits operation in that axis that’s why they arrested and killed them As they are required to do when they investigated and confirmed the involvement of any person in any act of banditry in the two Local Governments which have been going on since last year”.

“I am wholeheartedly saying that I don’t know anything about this operation as far as I am concerned the Vigilante is being supported by the State Government and I cannot dabble on anything that is supported by the Government that I am serving for the peaceful coexistence of the people of my Chiefdom and Taraba State and to avoid further accusations from any quarter”. the Jankada reiterated.
