TRIBUTE: Time is waiting for Betara to take his baton – by Abubakar H. Muhammad

0

With the slowly but timely fading away of a generation of political front runners in southern Borno State, new forces are taking over the political steering wheel, and that, they are doing with turboing acceleration.

In Biu local government, one of the hot-bed of the region’s politicking, this new generation is undoubtedly occupied by young vibrant folks, who from all indications, deliberately or not, will stop at nothing in making their presence and impact felt in the overall political discuss in the state.

Even though I was born and brought up in Maiduguri, I am by origin from Biu. But I am not so familiar with it’s politics, especially at the very local level.

However, because of my original connection to it, I am interested in any conversation I come across about it.

Except for Alh. Umar Usman Kadafur, Borno’s deputy governor, and Aliyu Mamman Kachalla, aka Opanka, the PDP candidate for house of assembly member representing Biu in the recently conducted election, and few others, the most familiar political brand in the whole region is, Muktar Aliyu Betara, the house of representative member, representing Biu, Bayo, Shani and Kwaya Kusar federal constituency.

As for Opanka, I knew him through an acquaintance who married his younger sister; why it is only natural one should know the deputy governor of his state, but when it is Betara, you most know him outside of all these because of overwhelming, all embracing featuristic generosity and interventions in the lives of the people of the region and even beyond.

You would often hear ‘Betara has transformed Biu into a modern city’ which he truly did but in a fashion as if to say through his private resources. The most extreme of them were those who say they are in no need of Maiduguri because they have Biu, thanks, they would want to say to Betara.

Well, this is not surprising as he is responsible for the construction of 20 health care centers, ambulances and the installation of more than 600 solar powered street lights among other things in his constituency.

This has made him a major and necessary subject in the discos of Borno politics.

He is a power broker in his own right. Now beyond Biu and Southern Borno, no political argument, especially in Maiduguri and its environs is complete without the mention of the lawmaker, and comparing him with other politicians seemed even a no-go area.

In the capital city today, everyone is eager to move a cheekbone whenever his name is whispered, and I am yet, God-for-bid, to sniff a bad energy around it, as if to suggest that the ‘Betara they know’ has no enemies or political rivals.

My first and closest encounter with him was in October 2022 in Abuja, at the dinner organized to honor Borno awardees who were conferred with national honors by President Muhammadu Buhari, with him included.

A natural crowd puller, his presence was soon felt immediately he stepped into the hall.

The respect and love people have for him made him a center of attention, with everyone struggling to register their congratulations to him.

An opportunity was missed when we couldn’t interview him because of crowd.

Secondly, myself and my colleague, Yunusa Bunu, gatecrashed into his entourage at the national assembly building after a plenary session, just few days after the first incident. Due to his heavy security and entourage, including some of his colleagues, one would easily mistake him for the speaker of the house.

We were overwhelmed by their presence that even the naturally officious Yunusa couldn’t attempt to penetrate the heavy crowd. It was such a grand appearance.

Therefore, the Betara I know is an image of greatness, too much of a muchness.

As a politician, his close associate would tell you that he is always concerned about his service to the people rather than for himself and not so much of a popularity scavenger. This is so much true as he doesn’t have social media touts and town criers like most politicians because his integrity and gentle posture would not allow him to stood so low as to recruit some.

Also, unlike typical Nigerian politicians serving at the national level, Betara does not patronize city glamour and its paparazzi. He is either at work or whenever he visits his state, officially or otherwise, observers say that he hardly even spends the night at Maiduguri but proceeds directly to his home town to romance his people’s company.

The level of his acceptance by his people and observers around can only be understood through his unmatched generosity, a virtue many believe is his selling point and second to none among his circle. It has sometimes portrayed him as a multi-billionaire, whether he is or not, actually doesn’t matter.

Even with that, he is never seen flaunting it on people’s face or irresponsibly advertising it for public consumption and cheep commendations, he just do what he does.

And as a leader, the former high school headboy at Benishiek is a natural leader. His people would attest to his humility in engaging with the masses and his listening ears; which perhaps he may had imbided when he worked at Nigerian Telecommunication Limited (NITEL).

As a public servant, his activities in several house committees, particularly the appropriations and defense committees, has earned him a remarkable national recognition, a feat which fetched him a national honors award and made him an unmatchable contender for the speakership of the 10th assembly.

In 16 years, he has served in about seven top committees and his successes in the current appropriation committee led to the successful enactment of the Appropriation Act, 2022 and the Finance Act, 2021.

By all standards, I believe the topnotch crisis manager, Betara, now going in for his fifth tenure, deserves any position at the national assembly because he is not only competent but has paid his dues.

With all the endorsements coming from right-left and center, and if faith has it his way, the green chamber will in the future, look back and be proudly glad for making that choice.

Troops bomb ISWAP position, many killed in Yobe

Troops of 27 Task Force Brigade in Buni-Gari, Yobe, have bombed ISWAP terrorists’ position with heavy artillery after sighting them in a convoy of gun trucks.

The incident occured last Saturday, April 29th, 2023, at Ambia village in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.

Reports indicated that the artillery bomb landed in one of the gun trucks of the terrorists, killing unconfirmed numbers of them and injuring others.

It also gathered that the terrorists have evacuated their wounded colleagues as well as those killed by the bomb and were reportedly conveyed to Zindia in the Timbuktu Triangle, where they were buried and treating the wounded ones.

Recall that recently ISWAP terrorists killed 10 villagers in cold blood along Buni-Gari axis.

The deceased met their untimely death when one of them went to fetch firewood in a nearby bush, but was ambushed and killed by the terrorists.

Having gone missing for about 24 hours, his relatives mobilized and embarked on a search-and-rescue mission, only to be killed by the terrorists with some escaping with gunshot wounds.

The Yobe State Government had, in strong terms, condemned the attack on the innocent citizens and called on the military to intensify aggressive fighting patrol along the area.

Court Returns Yahaya Bello’s Seized Houses, N400m

0

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday lifted the interim forfeiture order placed on 14 properties and N400m allegedly linked to Kogi State, Governor Yahaya Bello.

Justice Nicholas Oweibo, in a ruling, said the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission could not move against the sitting governor as he has immunity under Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution.

Following an ex parte application by the EFCC, the court had on February 22 made an order for the interim forfeiture of the 14 properties and firms in Lagos, Abuja, and the United Arab Emirates as well as N400m, recovered from one Aminu Falala.

The anti-graft agency told the court that the properties were reasonably suspected to have been acquired with proceeds of fraud.

The EFCC got the court to freeze the properties rellying on sections 9 and 10 of the Proceeds of Crimes (Recovery and Management) Act, 2022.

The court had then ordered the anti-graft agency to make publication of the order in two national dailies for any interested parties to show cause why the interim forfeiture should not be made permanent.

Following the publication, the governor, through his legal team, filed a Notice of Intention and an application seeking the vacation of the interim forfeiture order.

Bello insisted that the properties were legitimately acquired by him long before he was elected as Kogi State governor.

He alleged that the EFCC suppressed facts to obtain the forfeiture order and urged the court to set it aside.

He also challenged the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court in Lagos to entertain the suit on the grounds that the properties listed were in Abuja, Kogi, and UAE, and the personality involved is based in Lokoja, and as such, the suit should have been either in Kogi State or Abuja.

Consequently, he urged the court to vacate the case for lack of jurisdiction.

Though the EFCC, through its lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), opposed Bello’s prayers, Justice Oweibo, in a ruling on Wednesday agreed with the governor and lifted the forfeiture order.

Justice Oweibo held that given Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution, which gives immunity to a sitting governor from any civil or criminal prosecution, the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

Consequently, he struck out the suit for lack of jurisdiction.

Strike Looms As Resident Doctors Give FG 2-week Ultimatum

0

National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, has threatened to shut down the health sector if the Federal Government fails to address its demands in the next two weeks.

NARD demands including immediate withdrawal and jettisoning of the bill seeking to prevent Nigerian medical doctors from being issued full practicing licenses or allowed to travel abroad for five years, and also a 200 percent salary increment for doctors.

NARD President, Dr Emeka Innocent, gave the warning on Saturday, while reading the communique issued at the end of the Extra Ordinary National Executive Council Meeting of the association in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Innocent said “despite several engagements with FG on the need to upwardly review the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, CONMESS, which was last reviewed over ten years ago.

“The government has neither engaged NARD in the negotiation table nor taken any step in addressing the issue. There had been previous ultimatums issued to the government on account of the salary structure review.

Also frowning at the refusal of government to pay salary arrears of 2014,2015 and 2016 as well as the arrears of the consequential adjustment of minimum wage, Innocent noted that many state governors are yet to implement the appropriate CONMESS structure, domesticate the medical residency training act, MRTA, or improve on the hazard allowance paid to NARD members.

“In the nine-point resolutions, the body demanded an “immediate increment in the CONMESS salary structure to the tune of 200% of the current gross salary of doctors in addition to the new allowances included in the letter written by NARD to the Honorable Minister of Health on the 7th of July 2022 for the review of CONMESS.”

Other demands are immediate massive recruitment of clinical staff, commencement of payment of all salary arrears owed our members including the 2014, 2015 and 2016 salary arrears as well as areas of the consequential adjustment of the minimum wage.

According to him, the two weeks ultimatum begins Saturday 29th of April 2023, to resolve all these demands, following the expiration of which on the 13th of May, we may not be able to guarantee industrial harmony in the sector nationwide.
