0

The Katsina State Police Command says it repelled a terrorist attack on its Magama “Nipping Point” along Jibia-Katsina road and killed one of the terrorists while others escaped with various degree of gunshot wounds.

One AK-47 rifle and four magazines containing ninety (90) rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, money and other exhibits were recovered from the assailants.

SP Isah Gambo, the spokesman of the Katsina Police Command, who disclosed this in a press statement on Monday, however, said two of its officers were injured in the attack by the assailants.

According to Gambo, the hoodlums who staged the attack around 04:30am on Monday, were in large numbers but were subdued by its operatives after a fierce gun duel.

Gambo also noted in the statement that search parties are still on the lookout in the area with a view to arresting or recovering more casualties on the side of the terrorists.

I’ve Done My Best For Nigeria, Next President Should Continue, Says Buhari

0

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday said he has done his best for Nigeria, calling on his successor from the upcoming 2023 elections to make Nigeria one of the leading countries “by the end of this century.”

“I welcome and accept both the accolades and criticisms in equal measure, secure in the conviction that I did my best to serve our dear country Nigeria and I pray that the next President will also pick up the baton and continue the race to make Nigeria one of the leading countries of the world by the end of this century,” Mr Buhari said.

The president made this statement in his last New Year message in office on Saturday. However, Mr Buhari had last week Friday admitted that his good was not enough.

“I wonder if I am going to miss much. I think I’m being harassed. I believe I’m trying my best but still my best is not good enough,” Mr Buhari said in a documentary at a dinner organised to mark his 80th birthday in Abuja.

Also, in October, first lady Aisha Buhari apolosied to Nigerians on behalf of her husband.

“The expectations on us were so high, and maybe after seven years, we haven’t met their expectations. Only God knows what is in somebody’s mind,” Mrs Buhari told BBC Pidgin in an interview.

However, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, had on several occasions claimed that the achievements of Mr Buhari will leave many Nigerians, especially critics of the regime, “breathless.”

Nigerians have witnessed gross human rights abuses, state-sponsored massacres and disappearances and also clampdown on protesters under the Buhari regime.

The Buhari regime continues to detain former National Security adviser, Dasuki Sambo, and the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and his wife, in spite of court orders granting them bail.

In 2015, shortly after Mr Buhari assumed office, over 348 members of Shiites Islamic group were massacred and buried in a mass grave by the military. Though a judicial panel indicted the Nigerian Army, over six years after the incident, no one has been prosecuted.

Similarly in 2016, Amnesty International reported how Nigerian security operatives killed 150 pro-Biafra unamred protesters.

The nationwide EndSARS protest against police brutality and extra-judicial killings by the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigerian police, was destabilised as state-sponsored thugs unleashed mayhem on protesters under the supervision of the police.

It was made worse when on October 2020, the Nigerian Army opened live rounds on peaceful EndSARS protesters at the Lekki Tollgate, killing about 10.

A judicial panel set up by Lagos State to investigate the Lekki Massacre indicted the Nigerian army for using force on the protesters. The panel recommended the dismissal of officers who participated in the massacre and compensation of victims of the massacre.

However, the recommendations of the panel were ignored by both the Lagos State government and the Buhari-led regime, denying the October 20, 2020 massacre.

Police Is A Noble Profession, Allow Your Children To Join – IGP Tells Parents

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba has appealed to parents to encourage their children and wards to pursue careers as police operatives in the country.

According to the IGP, the Nigeria Police Force is one of the most reliable platforms for advancing the cause of national service.

Baba stated this during the Passing Out Parade of 374 newly recruited constables at the Police Training College, Oyin-Akoko, Akoko North West Local Government of Ondo State.

The IGP, who was represented by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 17 Akure, Yunus Akeera, stressed that with youths taking an interest in the country’s police force, it would no doubt sustain the common vision for an efficient policing system.

While emphasising that the police force had zero tolerance for indiscipline, he advised the new constables not to engage in acts capable of soiling their names and the profession.

Akeera added that the new constables would be deployed to complement officers on election duty in 2023.

He appreciated President Mohammadu Buhari’s consistent commitment to repositioning the Nigeria Police Force as a modern brand.

In his remarks, the Commandant of the Police Training College, Oyin-Akoko and the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Adebayo Rafiu, who congratulated the recruits, charged them to be selfless and patriotic while discharging their duties.

He said: “I also urge you to constantly refresh your newly acquired knowledge and skills by putting all what you have learnt into practice on the field in order to uphold the highest level of discipline and professionalism in the discharge of your statutory duties.”

Borno To Hold Council Elections May 20

Borno State Independent Electoral Commission (BOSIEC) has fixed May 20, 2023, for the conduct of local government council elections in the state.

A statement by the commission spokesperson, Zara Alhassan, said the executive chairman of BOSIEC, Lawan Maina, announced the date in a meeting with the leadership of political parties and stakeholders on Saturday in Maiduguri.

“As you are all aware, the commission has announced the date for the local government council election to take place on May 20, 2023, by virtue of the powers conferred on the commission under Section 10 and 18 (a) of BOSIEC Law, 2002.

“Therefore, may I assure you that the commission highly values your participation and would, Insha Allah, draw the strength, encouragement, and inspiration to see that we conduct a free, fair and credible election in all the 27 Local Government councils in our dear state.

“However, the need for cooperation and good working relationship between all the registered political parties and Borno State Independent Electoral Commission (BOSIEC) cannot be overemphasised,” Mr Maina was quoted as saying in the statement.

He pointed out the importance of mutual trust and understanding among stakeholders for the election’s success.

He reiterated the commitment of BOSIEC to justify the confidence reposed in it by the political parties to provide a level playing field for all.

The meeting was attended by representatives of 14 political parties and security agencies, among others, who were updated on the level of preparations.

NANS Laments Fee Hike In UNIMAID, Calls For Downward Review

The National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) has decried the increase in registration fees by the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID).

According to NAN, the students’ association is calling for a downward review of the fee, adding that most of the students “can’t afford it.”

Suleiman Muhammad-Sarki, the national vice president of the association (for special duties), spoke on the fee hike at a news conference in Maiduguri.

He said the recent increase in the fee by the institution is “unnecessary”.

The VP also pointed out that the northeast region was recovering from the insurgency.

“Increment of any amount on registration charges will definitely lead to a huge number of school dropouts across the country,” he said.

“The recent hike in registration charges by some Nigerian universities does not come to us as a surprise but as an affront to war against insurgency, banditry and kidnapping.

“Students who are unable to pay the new fee might end up becoming dropouts and this will add to the rising number of youth restiveness in Nigeria.

“[This] may also in return increase the number of insurgents, bandits, and kidnappers.

“As a student who paid N30,000 last session, I could not afford to pay N74,000 now expected from the latest increase, and I may be forced to quit studies.”

The unionist urged the government and other stakeholders to intervene to enable indigent students to access quality education.

Earlier, Ahmed Lawan, UNIMAID registrar, announced an upward review of registration fees and other charges.

“The action is as a result of the rising cost of laboratory items, teaching and learning materials,” he said.

The former minister lamented that some people were defending the government’s failures while ignoring the state of the country and its people.

She wrote, “If we were a normal country, no one would be shameless to defend the ABYSMAL FAILURES of the @NigeriaGov of @NGRPresident @MBuhari. Just look at the state of the country and its people! Yet, some have the mind to run around the internet spewing rubbish. Defenders of Failure.”
