Amid claims that he is backing Peter Obi, the Labour Party, LP, flag bearer, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said nobody can threaten him over his choice of a presidential candidate.

Obasanjo said he had shed blood and gone to prison; hence nobody could threaten him about his choice of a presidential candidate.

He disclosed this at the Ohanaeze Ndigbo National Secretariat in Enugu State.

Obasanjo had visited the Secretariat in the company of Afenifere’s leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo and Obi.

They visited the Secretariat to pay condolence over the death of First Republic Aviation Minister, Mbazulike Amaechi.

However, Obasanjo said: “I have shed my blood for this country. I have gone to prison for this country.

“So, what are you going to frighten or threaten me with? The only thing that my senior brother (Adebanjo) hasn’t done is that he hasn’t shed his blood but he has gone to prison but we will leave that aside.”

He said Nigeria’s problem was more national than ethnic.

The former president lamented that Nigeria was yet to have a leader with the right type of character.

“The problem we have in our hands in Nigeria is not ethnic. It is national. And for me, the most important thing in a leader is character.

“If I put my hand on someone, it means that comparing with the other, I see that there is a merit that will be of benefit to Nigeria,” he said.

You Are A Model Of Democracy In Africa – Biden Tells Buhari

0

President Joe Biden of the United States has praised President Muhammadu Buhari for his efforts in deepening democracy in Africa.

According to a statement signed by Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, Biden spoke on Wednesday in Washington during his meeting with leaders of six African countries slated to have elections in 2023.

The US president said the meeting with the select African leaders was to discuss democracy in Africa, share experiences with the US on the forthcoming elections as well as encourage the countries to continue with the democratic process.

Biden said he followed the trajectory of Buhari from when he was an opposition leader to when he was elected president.

He added that it is “very heartening” that Nigeria is a model for democracy especially the fact that Buhari is not seeking a third term.

He, therefore, encouraged Buhari and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to continue to be totally non-partisan.

The US president also noted that he understands the challenges facing the African countries and expressed the willingness of the US to support them in every area assistance may be required.

Responding, Buhari expressed his appreciation to the US president for his positive remarks and congratulated him on attaining the peak of his political career.

He also thanked him for organising the summit with African leaders and wished him well in all his endeavours.

Oyetola Took N18bn Loan After Losing Election – Adeleke

0

The Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has disclosed that his predecessor, Gboyega Oyetola, took N18 billion loan after he lost the July 16th, 2022 Osun governorship election.

This is as he also revealed that the state is indebted to the tune of N407.32 billion as of November 30th, 2022.

Adeleke disclosed this on Thursday during a meeting with Osun State Traditional Rulers at Osogbo, Osun State Capital.

According to him, my administration inherited eight outstanding loan facilities, apart from salaries and pension debts, from Governor Oyetola’s administration.

Adeleke explained that the repayment period for the loan facilities ranges from 16 months to about 28 years.

“My good people of Osun state, the total loan stock as of today is N331.32 Billion.

“If the N76 billion debt on salaries and pension are added, the state is indebted to the tune of N407.32 billion. The amount owed to contractors is yet to be determined.

“The only fund in government coffers, as of Monday 29th November, was for November 2022 Salary. Otherwise, the state treasury was empty.

“As your governor, I will ask questions on your behalf. And will demand answers,” Adeleke told the traditional rulers.

He added, “Governor Oyetola must explain how the N331 Billion borrowed in the name of Osun State was expended, with no obvious infrastructural development to justify this huge debt.

“Governor Oyetola must explain how the N18 Billion Bridge Loan taken after he lost the election on July 16, 2022, was expended.

“Governor Oyetola must also explain why Osun state is owing salaries and pension to the tune of N76 Billion after collecting a N50 Billion Salary Bail Out Loan from the Federal Government

“The creditors, especially the Commercial Banks must explain why various loans were given to an administration beyond its 4-year tenure. 28 years is equivalent to the tenure of at least four governors. A child that is born today would have earned a Ph.D. at 28 years of age. This is nothing but mortgaging the future of Osun State with nothing to show for it. This is definitely not acceptable.”

I Will Move Nigeria From Consumption To Producing Nation – Peter Obi

0

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi has promised to move Nigeria from a consuming nation to producing nation.

Peter Obi was speaking on Tuesday while addressing a campaign rally at Confluence Stadium, Lokoja.

According to him: “It is a promise, for I and my team are prepared to be held accountable for that, we will move Nigeria from a consuming nation to a consuming one. We will make sure that production starts from a local level, we will increase the minimum wage since the minimum wage today can hardly sustain workers, and we should be able to produce enough for consumption and even export to create wealth.”

In his words: “Good people of Kogi State, we are not here to buy your vote; we are here to tell you how we are going to save the country. We want to unite Nigeria. We want to bring the family back together. We want to bring back the rule of law. We will consult you before taking any decision on any matter that affects you because power belongs to you.”

Obi also promised to ensure the steel industry is revived to give strong backing to the economy.

“Steel industry is very important to the development of the economy, therefore we will liaise with professionals and experts who know what to do with the Ajaokuta Steel Company immediately [after] we are sworn in.

The labour party presidential candidate urged the people to reject other parties at the polls even if they bring money to buy their votes.

“If they bring money, collect their money but vote against them at the polls. Tell them we want to follow those who know [the] road. Tell them that you [are] tired of being in the wilderness,” he stated.

Earlier, the convener of the “Bring back our girls” campaign organisation, Aisha Yesufu, who was on the campaign train told the audience that “Nigeria needs Peter Obi as he represents [the] fearlessness needed to address the insecurities in the country.

“We are no longer safe in our own homes, we must vote for somebody we can hold accountable to provide good governance, our lives must be made to matter; we must vote for someone who can make our lives matter, Peter Obi is the one.”

“Nigerian youths are tired of knowing someone before you can gain employment, vote for inclusiveness, let’s give Nigeria a president that is competent and can deliver us,” Aisha Yesufu added.

Senate, CBN set to clash over cash withdrawal policy

0

Indications emerged on Tuesday that the Senate may have a running battle with the management of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, over the cash withdrawal limit policy of the apex bank.

Although the upper legislative chamber agreed to debate the latest policy on Wednesday, Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa (PDP Bauchi North), warned that the report of the Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions, chaired by Senator Uba Sani (APC Kaduna Central) must not be swept under the carpet.

This caused uneasy calm in the chamber, pointing to the fact that not many senators would agree to the cash withdrawal policy.

A member of the committee, Senator Olubunmi Adetunmbi (APC Ekiti North) had drew the attention of his colleagues to the absence of the panel chairman, who is the APC governorship candidate in Kaduna State from the chamber due to the North West zonal presidential campaign rally of the party in Kaduna.

Senator Adetunmbi said the chairman was billed to present the report of the screening exercise conducted for the two CBN Deputy Governor-nominees, Mrs Aishat Ahmad, and Mr. Edward Lametek Adamu.

Both Ahmad and Adamu were recently reappointed by President Muhammadu Buhari who requested the Senate’s screening and confirmation for their second and final tenure at the apex bank

Ahmad, who is the CBN Deputy Governor on Financial System Stability, had explained details of the policy to the panel during the screening last Friday when she and her colleague appeared for screening.

Details of the explanation given by the CBN chief was to be presented for debate, alongside the screening exercise on Tuesday by the senators.

However, Senator Adetunmbi said the debate could not take place because of the absence of the panel chairman.

He said: “Exactly a week ago the Senate resolved that the committee on banking and financial institutions should come forth today to report on the enquiries that it was mandated to make on the new policy of the Central Bank on the withdrawal limit.

“The committee was specifically mandated to interrogate these issues based on the concern that was expressed in the chamber, with the two deputy governors that were coming for clearance.

“This took place on Thursday last week. Two candidates came for clearance and the issues were thoroughly looked into, especially in the opening remarks of the chairman.

“He specifically reported that the Senate wanted the two deputy governors to elaborate on the rationale behind this policy in view of the massive public reaction to that policy.

“The deputy governors gave elaborate explanations and the committee also requested for further evidence in terms of documented reports that will enable the committee to fully understand the issues behind this policy during the plenary appropriately.

“Unfortunately, the report is not ready today because the chairman of the committee is busy on a political assignment; he is coming tomorrow to present the formal report of the committee.”

This explanation did not go down well with Senator Bulkachuwa, who said the fact that the panel didn’t submit its report should not stop the Senate debate on the CBN Nara withdrawal limit policy.

“We should not allow this thing to be swept under the carpet, it is a very serious issue and Nigerians are waiting to see what the Senate will do like the House or Representatives.

“The House of Representatives has asked the Governor of the Central Bank to stay action on this; leaving it till tomorrow is giving him another excuse and I urge this Senate to discuss this thing today,” he said.

The Senate President, Dr. Ahmad Lawan, ruled Senator Bulkachuwa out of order and insisted that the matter would be debated tomorrow (Wednesday).

He said: “I don’t think it is fair to say we are sweeping the matter under the carpet. To sweep something under the carpet in my understanding means to avoid it.

“Nobody here suggests by action or inaction that we are avoiding discussion on this matter.

“I think it is appropriate to give the Chairman of the Committee an opportunity to come and present his report personally and Senator Adetunmbi is a member of the Banking Committee.

“The Vice of the Committee who is the Chief Whip is here and they are all in attendance.

“They have something to tell us. The chairman wants to present the report himself and when he does that, we will be better informed and we can take appropriate action.

“Tomorrow is less than 24 hours by the grace of God., Please distinguished Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa, I want you to be present so that if there is anything that you want all of us to know even as all of us here feel strong about this.

“If we are going to debate it, let’s do that on the basis of information because that is when we can argue it and say no, stop it because of superior argument. So, let’s not doubt our sincerity here.”
