Stop punishing lecturers for striking, pay us – ASUU FUTO to FG

15

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) have urged the Federal Government to release the seven months’ unpaid salaries of its members.

ASUU urged the government to stop forthwith, the weaponization of hunger to whip Academics into submission and pay their withheld salaries spanning more than seven months.

Strikes all over the world are a legitimate tool to press home workers’ demands.

The Union’s Chairman, Dr Chinedu Ihejirika, pressed home the demand in a communique which he co-signed with its secretary, Dr Etienne Chinakwe and made available to newsmen in Owerri on Thursday, after a protest march by the Union.

Ihejirika voiced the Union’s rejection of what he described as the “casualization of Academics through the pro-rata payment of half salaries to our members in October 2022”.

He argued that while the Union embarked on a strike for seven months, its members deserved their salaries adding that the strike was only a legitimate tool to press home its demands and grievances.

According to him, the fate of any nation lies with her intellectuals, hence the need to preserve the future of great Nigerian children and the nation at large by paying prompt attention to the Union’s demands.

“We urge the government to honour their agreements, stop the No Work, No Pay anti labour rule and use the first ever developed, homegrown payment platform known as the University Transparency and Accountability System (UTAS) to pay University Teaching Staff ”

Speaking while receiving the Union in her office, Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Nnenna Oti, assured the lecturers of her solidarity with the Union and its “legitimate demands”.

Oti, represented by the University Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academics, Prof. Godfrey Nwandikom said that the demands would be conveyed to the appropriate authorities.

MAIDAWAAREWA reports that members of the Union chanted solidarity songs while carrying placards with inscriptions such as “We say no to casualization and victimization of lecturers”, “ASUU is fighting for the survival of Nigerian Universities ”
”Pay us our salary arrears “, among others.

Members of the union are yet to receive salaries for March to September 2022 when their strike action grounded academic activities across universities in the country.

Zulum finds patients in blackout, moves Govt House diesel to two hospitals

0

Borno State Governor, Prof Babagana Umara Zulum, said he was not informed about power outage and orders immediate upgrade of solar installations. “No official told me of power outage” he said.

MAIDAWAAREWA learnt that, at about 10pm last night Friday,  Gov.  Zulum, showed up unannounced at two hospitals in Maiduguri only to find patients in darkness due to power failure that had lingered for a number of days.

Zulum was at Umaru Shehu Ultra Modern Hospital and Fatima Ali Sheriff Maternity Hospital, both around densely populated Bulumkutu communities in Maiduguri.

The governor had just returned from Abuja and decided to drive from the airport straight to the hospitals, soon after he got hint from private sources that the hospitals were under blackout for days.

Governor Zulum went to see things for himself and he confirmed patients were in darkness because there was lack of diesel supply to standby generators.

Both hospitals relied on generators because of lack of electricity supply from the national grid since Boko Haram destroyed electricity equipment along Maiduguri-Damaturu highway, in response to which frantic efforts were still being made by federal and state officials to restore connections to areas yet to have electricity, including parts of Bulumkutu axis.

Zulum, a professor of engineering, asked persons in charge of generators at both hospitals some technical questions, which led to his confirmation that the generators had no problems at all. They were fully functional, but lacked diesel to power them.

“It is very unfortunate that no official either from the Hospital Management Board or the Ministry of Health drew my attention to this outage” the governor queried.

“If we can power our streetlights constantly, I see no reason why we cannot power our hospitals” Zulum lamented as he consoled patients and their loved ones for being in darkness despite dealing with illnesses.

Wondering the quickest way to mobilize diesel, the governor directed that available diesel meant to power generators at the Government House, Maiduguri, where he lives, be immediately transferred by trucks to both hospitals, pending his meeting with officials of the state’s Ministry of Health the following day, to find sustainable solution.

Meanwhile, as part of measures to ensure sustainable electricity in both hospitals, Governor Zulum, last night, directed an upgrade of existing solar-powered installation at Fatima Ali Sheriff Maternity Hospital.

Zulum also directed solar installations at Umaru Shehu Ultra Modern Hospital.

The governor, in his usual style, will potentially follow up of his directives to ensure permanent resolution.

Nnamdi Kanu’s prophecy on oil in North fulfilled, time for Biafra actualization – IPOB

0

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has disclosed that its leader, Nnamdi Kanu’s prophecy of oil discovery in the northern part of Nigeria has been actualized.

IPOB said the Nigerian government should sanction the actualization of Biafra with the discovery of oil in the North.

During the week, Buhari had flagged off the commercial production of crude oil and gas from the $3bn Kolmani Integrated Development Project.

Located along the fields of Gombe and Bauchi, the Kolmani project, with Oil Prospecting Licence 809 and 810, lies in the Gongola Basin of the Upper Benue Trough, straddling the two northern states.

The field, according to its promoters, will produce about 50,000 barrels of crude oil per day and holds over one billion barrels of crude oil reserves, shooting up Nigeria’s oil reserves to over 38 billion barrels.

Reacting to the development, IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, claimed that revenue from the oil field would be used to propagate jihadist agenda.

A statement by Powerful reads: “We the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the command and leadership of our great leader and prophet Mazi Nnamdi KANU confirm the answer to the prayers of our leader concerning oil discovery in the North. In one of his landmark broadcasts on Radio Biafra, he prayed for God Almighty Chukwu Okike Abiama to give crude oil to the Northern Region of Nigeria.

“Northern Nigeria has large deposits of many solid minerals that are more lucrative than crude oil. But because they thirst for oil, and because of their greedy nature to conquer others, they are ready to do unimaginable things because of oil in Biafraland. In his infinite wisdom, God Almighty Eze Chukwu Okike has settled the fraudulent contraption’s age-long problem of unity occasioned by crude oil.

“Crude oil discovery in the North will certainly settle this forced unity if indeed, they are truthful in settling Nigeria’s problem. Oil or no oil, Biafrans are not interested. All we need is a conducive environment to do our business without fear of terrorists at our borders.”

Speaking further, he said: “Now that every component part of Nigeria has oil, can we all go our separate ways and mind our own businesses?”

University lecturer faults Aisha Buhari over critic’s detention

0

A university lecturer, Professor Umaisha Galadimawa on Thursday, faulted the decision of the wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, to order security agents to detain her critic.

DAILY POST recalls that security operatives had allegedly arrested a 23-year-old student of the Federal University, Dutse, Aminu Mohammed, for criticising the first lady in a post on Twitter.

Following the incident, there has been a public outcry, with individuals and organisations calling for the release of the student without delay.

However, Professor Umaisha, a Political Science lecturer at the Bayero University Kano noted that as a mother and the wife of the President, Aisha Buhari should be ready for criticisms from different angles, adding that criticisms help leaders adjust to the demands of the people.

Umaisha expressed pain over the continuous detention of the 23-year-old student, who he said could have been reacting to the pains of Nigerians through his criticism.

“Every human being with a sense of belonging knows what Nigerians are passing through today. If in the event, where even a child in the womb makes an unpleasant comment against his/her mother, it’s a lesson and warning for her to make a positive change and impact on the lives of the people.” He said

According to him, if a child did not cry, as a mother, you won’t know he is hungry, adding that the young student criticised her, so she can know that Nigeria is boiling and there is no dull game anymore.

He, however, pleaded with the wife of the president, to urgently order the release of the student.
