Borno police loses two constables in road accident

Borno State Police Command has lost two female police constables in a fatal road accident at Hawa Kibo, Plateau.

Seventeen others sustained various degrees of injuries, while on a trip to participate at the bi-annual Police Games 2022 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

They were en route to represent Zone 15 of the police formations, comprising Borno and Yobe commands.

ASP Sani Kamilu Shatambaya, police spokesman in Borno, in a statement released to newsmen Monday disclosed the incident, adding that the command is in grief.

‘The personnel who lost their lives and injured victims were conveyed back to Maiduguri.

‘Befitting burial was conducted and the injured are currently receiving treatment in various hospitals in Maiduguri, and also promised to link up with the remaining participants in Uyo on Wednesday,’ he noted.

Their names are given as Constable Godiya and Constable Kubra; however the date of incident was not disclosed.

CP Abdu Umar, commissioner of police in the state who led a delegation of personnel from the command commiserated with the families of the deceased officers.

He prayed for the repose of the souls of the departed and a quick recovery for the wounded victims.

He urged their families to bear the irreparable loss in good faith and continue to pray for their eternal peace.

Similarly, the CP prayed for those who proceeded with the journey to partake in the competition successfully and return to their commands and families safely.

Police arrest Adamawa school principal for allegedly defiling minor

The police in Adamawa State have arrested a 52-year-old man, Enoch Kwaleji.

Kwaleji is accused of raping a 13-year-old girl in Sangere Jabbi Lamba, Girei Local Government Area.

The suspect is a vice principal of a Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS) in Abba Murke, Song LGA.

A statement by Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje said Kwaleji is a resident of Jabbi Lamba, Girei.

On November 15 at about 1900hrs, he allegedly lured the victim to an uncompleted building and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.

The incident was reported to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Jabbi Lamba by the victim’s mother.

Commissioner of Police, Sikiru Akande has directed the officer in charge of Family Unit to lead the investigation and ensure prosecution.

Akande advised parents and guardians to be watchful of their children, especially the girl-child, against molesters and other criminals.

Old notes expire Jan 31, no extended deadline – Emefiele

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Governor, Godwin Emefiele, on Tuesday insisted that the deadline for the new naira notes would not be changed.

Emefiele stressed that the January 21, 2023 deadline is sacrosanct.

“No, we will not shift any deadline, what we have done is not against the law; it’s in tandem with the law.

“We announced this programme on October 26, 2022, and we said upon release of the new currency, the legal tender status will run concurrently with the old currency till 31 January 2023.

“That is almost 100 hundred days, 100 days is enough for any person in any part of Nigeria to deposit his money in the bank and get ready to withdraw cash when the new notes are released,” the Central Bank governor explained.

Buhari flags-off oil exploration in Bauchi, Gombe

Buhari to unveil new naira notes tomorrow – Emefiele

Godwin Emefiele, the Governor of the Central Bank (CBN) has confirmed that President Muhammadu Buhari will unveil the designed Naira notes tomorrow Wednesday, November 23, 2022.

Emefiele announced this during the Central Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee monthly meeting in Abuja.

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu today begged the Pere of Gbaramatu Kingdom, HRM Oboro Gbaraun II to tell the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to stop contesting elections in the Country.

CBN Gov, Emefiele explains features of new naira notes

The Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele has explained the features of the redesigned notes.

Emefiele told State House Correspondents that it was in line with global best practices, noting that it was mandatory for the naira to be redesigned and re-issued every five to eight years.

According to him, it is regrettable that the naira has not been redesigned for the past 19 years owing to lack of political will from previous administrations.

“In the past, I have to confess that attempts by the CBN to redesign and re-issue the naira notes have been resisted. It is only President Muhammadu Buhari that has exhibited the courage to do so,” he stated.

Emefiele said it was the mandate of the CBN, to redesign and re-issue the notes, stressing that the exercise would become a regular trend after five to eight years.

His words, “After today, the CBN will begin to redesign and reissue the naira for every five to eight years”

The CBN governor said that Nigeria has gone cashless and that security agencies would monitor people making withdrawal at the counter to know how much was withdrawn and also monitor the usage of the money.

He debunked insinuations that the policy was targeted at anyone, especially the political class.

He said that the CBN was determined in ensuring that the provision of the law on volume of money one should carry is followed.

“The world has moved to cashless economy and the CBN has moved to cashless economy. We will restrain the volume of cash someone will withdraw over the counter. We will follow up with the person’s data to know the reason for such withdrawal,” he said.

Commenting on calls for extension of time for the usage of old notes, the CBN boss said, “we will not go with people that want extension of time. From today, this currency that was reissued will become a legal tender.”

Emefiele also said there is no local government area in the country where there is no bank agent, insisting that there is over one million points across the country that people should go and deposit the old notes.

The CBN boss also boasted that the new naira notes cannot be counterfeited because of the features in them.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday gave reasons he approved the redesign of ₦‎200, ₦‎500 and ₦‎1000 banknotes.

Speaking at the launch of the new banknotes in Abuja, Buhari said he gave the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) permission to redesign the ₦‎200, ₦‎500 and ₦‎1000 banknotes because the Naira is long overdue to wear a new look.

According to Buhari, “the new Naira banknotes have been fortified with security features that make them difficult to counterfeit.

“This implies that the Naira is long overdue to wear a new look.”

Buhari added, “In line with this power, the Central Bank Governor [Godwin Emefiele] approached me earlier this year to seek my permission to embark on a currency redesign project. I considered all the facts and reasons presented before me by the Central Bank.

“There was an urgent need to take control of currency in circulation and to address the hoarding of Naira banknotes outside the banking system, the shortage of clean and fit banknotes in circulation, and the increase in counterfeiting of high-denomination Naira banknotes. It’s on this basis that I gave my approval for the redesign of the ₦‎200, ₦‎500 and ₦‎1000 banknotes.”
