Thugs Attack Atiku’s Supporters At Campaign Rally In Kaduna

2

Suspected political thugs have attacked supporters of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar at the ongoing campaign rally in Kaduna State.

The former vice president confirmed this in a post on his verified social media handles on Monday.

This is coming a few days after thugs attacked supporters of the party in Zamfara State leading to the death of at least one person, while several others were injured.

Atiku in the post, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to call supporters of all political parties to order in a bid to tackle reoccurrence of such incident.

He wrote, “I have just received emergency reports of attacks on PDP supporters by thugs sponsored to scuttle the ongoing PDP campaign rally in Kaduna State. This is undemocratic and against the Peace Accord all parties signed up for just a few weeks ago.

“I urge President Muhammadu Buhari to call on all parties to call their supporters and members to order and to ensure that campaigns, just as with the elections themselves, are kept free, fair and safe”.

Casualties recorded during the attack could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.

Gunmen attacked a Celestial Church in Felele Quarters, Lokoja, Kogi State on Sunday.

SP William Ovye-Aya of the Police Command in Kogi confirmed the development on Monday.

Ovye-Aya said gunmen invaded the Celestial Church, “Blood of Jesus Parish,” at Felele quarters, around 8.00. p.m. on Sunday, and opened fire on worshippers, killing two persons and injuring many others.

“There was a distress call made to our command over the attack, which left two female worshippers dead, and several others injured.

“On getting the alert, our command quickly deployed a response team to the area with a view to restoring normalcy in the area and arresting the perpetrators.

Although there is no arrest yet, investigations are on to fish out the perpetrators who would face the full wrath of the law.

“Already, the corpses of the victims of the attack have been deposited at the Morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, where the injured are also being treated,” he said.

Ovye-Aya, however, called on the public to remain calm, and peaceful and go about their normal activities as the Police were on top of the matter.

The attack was the second in a space of three weeks as another Church was attacked within the same Felele Quarters of Lokoja.

Nigerian Police Detain Over 50 Officers For Requesting Payment Of Six Months’ Unpaid Salary Arrears

0

Over 50 personnel of the Nigeria Police Force who complained about the non-payment of their six months arrears of the new salary structure President Muhammadu Buhari approved for the Force in 2021 have been arrested.

Others arrested by the police authorities were those who lamented that their monthly salaries were being deducted by the authorities without explanations.

gathered that the affected policemen were arrested across the country, and airlifted to Abuja where they are being detained.

President Buhari had in 2021 approved a new salary structure President Muhammadu Buhari approved for the Force.

The approved police salary structure which its implementation supposed to have commenced in January 2022 only started in July 2022 with only one month arrears of payment, with six months outstanding.

Angered by the action of the authorities, some aggrieved policemen expressed their displeasure over the failure of the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba to pay up the unpaid arrears.

However, the police authorities claimed that the Nigerian government had not released the funds for the payment.

The police authorities in a wireless message referenced DTO: 201220/09/2022 from NIGPOL PAB FHQ Abuja to various police formations in Nigeria and titled: “INGENPOL SEC/NIGPOL ADMIN/DFA/DIA ABUJA PAYMECH/ACCOUNTPOL ALL STATES”, which was obtained by SaharaReporters said the finance ministry would have to approve the funds.

It said the payment would be done through the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

The wireless message partly read: “CV:3940/PB/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.46/5 salary arrangement, 20% reviewed Consolidated Police Salary Structure (CONPOSS) WEF January 2022. Implementation commenced in the month of July 2022 with six (6) months outstanding salary differential (I.E January – June 2022).

“INGENPOL direct you lecture officers and men yours on personnel cost that IPPIS Unit of the Office of the Account General of the Federation (OAGF) has the sole responsibility of police personnel cost fund and payment of police personnel salaries respectively. It should be clarified that neither INGENPOL nor NIGPOL PAB has any dealing with the already existing structure.

“However, because salary is welfare in nature, the force follow-up with IPPIS to ensure police personnel get their emoluments as at when due. For the six (6) months salary arrears differential, IPPIS is in possession of the approval, awaiting administrative procedures for cash-backing by Federal Ministry of Finance. After which payment will be effected. Any information contrary to this should be ignored and regarded as fake-news.”

“Ensure you properly warn all personnel serving yours on strict compliance as any violation will attract disciplinary actions. Treat as matter of urgency and very important please,” the message further read.

A source on Friday insisted that the Nigerian government had released the money for the six months’ arrears but the leadership of the police starting with the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, diverted the fund and refused to pay it to personnel.

The source who is an Inspector said many of his colleagues who spoke out against the non-payment of the arrears were arrested and detained in Abuja.

“They have refused to pay us our money, which the IGP shifted the blame on IPPIS. If he is truly after our welfare, what step has he taken over this matter? Over 50 police officers are in detention because of this arrears issue and some were dismissed underground, everyone is afraid for the fear of dismissal,” the source said.

“What they are doing is track you through social media, locate you and take you to Abuja. Within Delta State alone, nine personnel were arrested in September and uplifted to Abuja by air from Asaba airport.

“Up till now, they haven’t been released. For example someone posted on a WhatsApp group that the IGP and some DIGs are trying to share the arrears. Everyone that shared the message was arrested.”

When contacted, the Force spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, said he wasn’t aware of any arrest.

“Will find out, but I doubt it,” he said in a WhatsApp message to SaharaReporters.

MAPOLY Students Protest Fee Increment, Blocks Gate, Disrupt Exams

Students of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Monday, shut the school gate and disrupted the ongoing examination in protest against an “outrageous fees.”

The aggrieved students in collaboration with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ogun Axis, paralysed academic activities over increment of school and acceptance fees.

In their hundreds, the students as early as 6am on Monday barricaded the gates leading into the polytechnic, preventing entry and exit from the school.

They also disrupted the ongoing second semester examination from holding as other students coming for the exams met the entrance under lock and keys.

The protesting students, singing solidarity songs, carried placards with various inscriptions like ‘We no be rich kids, na why we come MAPOLY’, ‘#Say No To Unreasonable Increment Now !!!’, etc.

Addressing journalists, the Chairman of NANS in the State, Damilola Kehinde, insisted on the complete reversal of the increments and introduction of new fees in the school, as a condition to end the protest.

The students also demanded investigation of the management of the institution for alleged misappropriation and mismanagement of funds in the school.

The statement reads in part, “We are disheartened to converge here today, not for celebration but to decry the suffering and panic the management of the MAPOLY has subjected us to as students.

“Our offense as Nigerian students is that we want to be educated and the Dr Adeoye Odedeji led management of MAPOLY is saying education is not for the poor.

“Few months ago in the last academic session, tuition fee for both ND and HND students was increased including part time students whose figure is not accurately given.

“We resisted this increment and came to a benchmark of reduction in the initially added amount after due consultation.

“The clear promise made to the students’ body by this same Dr Odedeji and other members of the management team is that there will no longer be increment. At least, not in his own time as the Ag. Rector.

INEC Publishes Machina’s Name On Its Portal As Yobe North APC Senatorial Candidate

13

the Independent National Electoral Commission has complied with the letter written to the electoral body by the All Progressives Congress (APC) asking it to recognise and publish Bashir Machina’s name as its rightful candidate for Yobe North senatorial district.

The Federal High Court in Damaturu had in a landmark judgement ordered both INEC and APC to recognise Bashir Machina as the authentic senatorial candidate of the Party.

This has laid to rest all speculations on whether the party will comply with the court order given to it by the court.

earlier on Friday the APC in a letter dated October 12, 2022, and signed by its National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu and the Secretary, Sen. Iyiola Omisore asked INEC to publish the name of Machina on its portal in line with the court order.

The letter titled ‘Notification of Court Judgment In Favour of Bashir Sheriff’, reads, “We write to notify the Commission of the attached judgement dated 28th September 2022 and Order dated 5th October, 2022 from the Federal High Court, Damaturu Judicial Division directing the Commission to accept and recognize Bashir Sheriff as the Party’s candidate for Yobe North Senatorial District, Yobe State and to publish same accordingly.

“Above is for your information and necessary action, please.”

The Federal High Court in Damaturu had recently ruled that Nigeria’s Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, is not the candidate of the ruling party for the senatorial district in next year’s election into the National Assembly.

The court ruled that Machina is the authentic candidate of the party having won the legally recognised primary supervised by INEC officials.

There had been controversy over the ticket.

Machina, at a primary election organised by the party in May, had won unopposed.

But Lawan was said to have participated in another primary election organised by the APC after he contested the party’s presidential ticket and lost in June to Bola Tinubu, who is now the presidential candidate of the party.

Machina was reportedly asked to step down for Lawan but he insisted that he would not withdraw for the Senate President.

Amid the controversy, the APC submitted the Senate President’s name to INEC as its senatorial candidate for Yobe North.

Aggrieved, Machina instituted a suit asking the court to declare him as the authentic senatorial candidate of the APC for the 2023 election.

In her judgment, Justice Fadimatu Aminu nullified the parallel primary election that produced Lawan on June 9, 2022.

The judge also ordered the APC to forward the name of Machina to INEC as the authentic winner of the primary held in May.

Our Issues Not Well Addressed, Says ASUU

16

The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Friday called off its eight-month-old strike.

However, the union in a press statement made available to MAIDAWAAREWA noted that the issues in its disputes with the Federal Government were not well addressed.

The press release, which was signed by the National President of the union, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, however, hailed the intervention of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.

The statement partly read, “ The National Executive Council of ASUU held an emergency meeting at the Comrade Festus Iyayi National Secretariat, University of Abuja, Abuja, on Thursday, October 13, 2022”.

The union in its statement further noted that the Minister of Labour, Employment and Productivity, Chris Ngige, took the striking lecturers to court.

“The National Industrial Court, in its wisdom, gave an order compelling ASUU to resume work pending the determination of the substantive suit. Given the nature of the order, and in the opinion of our counsel, there was the need to appeal the interlocutory injunction granted against our union at the Court of Appeal.

“The Court of Appeal acknowledged the validity of the grounds of the union’s appeal but still upheld the order of the lower court and ordered our union to comply with the ruling of the lower court as condition precedent for the appeal to be heard.

“NEC noted the series of meetings with the leadership of the House of Representatives led by the Hon. Speaker, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, as well as intervention efforts of other well-meaning Nigerians both within and outside the government and the progress made so far.”

Speaking further on the status of negotiations, the union said, “While appreciating the commendable efforts of the leadership of the House of Representatives and other patriotic Nigerians who waded into the matter, NEC noted with regrets that the issues in dispute were yet to be satisfactorily addressed.

“However, as a law-abiding union and in deference to appeals by President Muhammadu Buhari, and in recognition of the efforts of Hon. Gbajabiamila, and other well-meaning Nigerians, ASUU NEC resolved to suspend the strike action embarked upon on February 14, 2022. Consequently, all members of ASUU are hereby directed to resume all services hitherto withdrawn with effect from 12:01 on Friday, October 14, 2022.”

I’m Sorry For Nigeria’s Next President – Sanusi

0

The deposed Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, has said he is concerned for the next president of Nigeria after President Muhammadu Buhari.

Sanusi stated this in Kaduna on Saturday while addressing notable politicians at a Kaduna Investment programme titled “Building a resilient economy.”

He explained that the country’s economy has been tied to the oil and gas sector, and subsidy removal is fast mitigating the economy’s growth.

Sanusi said: “In other words, debt service is now 108 percent of revenue. Every naira the Federal Government earns goes to service debt, and it is not enough, (as the FG) has to borrow to service the debt. And then begin to borrow to build roads, pay salaries and overheads.

“We are leaving a mountain of debt for our children. They (children) might curse us because we are taking all the money borrowed to subsidise petrol and enjoy it cheaply.

“We see the problem and we are going to continue. I’m sorry for the next president who comes in June and says I’m removing fuel subsidy after day one.”

Appeal Court Frees Nnamdi Kanu From Terrorism Charges

0

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory on Thursday upheld the appeal of the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

The court also discharged and acquitted the embattled leader of the proscribed group.

Kanu had in his appeal dated April 29 and marked CA/ABJ/CR/625/2022 applied to be discharged and acquitted. Kanu was first arraigned on December 23, 2015, and was later granted bail on April 25, 2017.

However, the Court of Appeal on Thursday declared as illegal and unlawful, the abduction Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria and quashed the entire terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government.

The Appellate Court held that the Federal Government breached all local and international laws in the forceful rendition of Kanu to Nigeria thereby making the terrorism charges against him incompetent and unlawful.

The Appeal Court in a judgment by Justice Oludotun Adebola voided and set aside the charges by the Federal Government against Kanu.

The Appellate Court proceeded to discharge Kanu from the alleged offences.

Justice Adebola held that failure of Nigeria to follow due process by way of Extradition was fatal to the charges against Kanu.

The Appeal Court further held that the failure of the Federal Government to disclose where and when the alleged offences were committed was also fatal to the terrorism charges and made them liable to dismissal.

Reacting to the judgment, Kanu’s lawyer and human rights activist, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, on his Facebook page on Thursday, said Kanu won at last.

“Appeal allowed, Oyendu Mazi Nnamdi KANU, discharged and acquitted. We have won!,” he wrote.
