ASUU Strike Will End In Few Days – Osodeke

0

Emmanuel Osodeke, president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, says the union is optimistic of an end to its strike soon.

He said this on Monday at a meeting with the leadership of the house of representatives.

Also present at the meeting was Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the house of representatives.

“Please, let all of us work together to put a beautiful end to this end to this thing we have started, so that every Nigerian will be proud that we have universities we can be proud of,” Osodeke said.

“Once again, I want to thank you. I also extend our appreciation to the president for intervening, I want to appeal that in the future, we should not allow strike to linger. Strike should not go beyond two days.

“If the way the national assembly has intervened, if we had done that long ago, or those in charge of labour and education had done exactly this, we would not be where we are today. We would not have stayed more than two or three weeks on this strike. There is strike all over the world — UK, US, all over — but they don’t allow it to last.

“So, once again, thank you very much and we hope that working together, in the next few days, we can put an end to this particular imbroglio in the Nigerian educational system.”

I’m Concerned About High Prices Of Foodstuffs — Buhari

0

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that his regime is very concerned about the rising cost of foodstuff in the country.

Expressing concerns while appearing before the Senate on Friday, Mr Buhari said his regime was implementing various measures towards addressing structural factors responsible for the food crisis.

“Government is very concerned about the high food prices in the country. Various measures are being implemented to address structural factors underlying the issue. We’ll also step-up current efforts aimed at boosting food production and distribution in the country,” Mr Buhari said.

His remarks come as Nigerians continue to feel the burning effects of rising food prices brought on by the impact of inflation.

The average cost of five kilograms of cooking gas increased from N4,397.68 in July to N4,456.56 in August according to the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics.(NBS)

The price of turkey, a popular protein diet in Nigerian dishes increased to N3,200 per kilo in stores as food scarcity occasioned by the pluming economy. However, the price has since continued to rise as inflation continues to increase.

According to NBS, food inflation in September increased to 23.12 per cent, its highest level in nearly 17 years, while core inflation increased to 17.2 per cent.

No Alternative To APC Victory, Says Buhari

0

President Muhammadu Buhari has challenged members of the All Progressives Congress Women Presidential Campaign Team to work hard in ensuring victory for the party in the 2023 general elections.

The president, who made the call at the inauguration of the APC Women team in Abuja on Monday, said the call had become imperative because there was no alternative to APC electoral victory in the 2023 presidential election.

Mr Buhari, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Ibrahim Gambari, urged team members to take the party to greater heights by developing and implementing an inclusive party strategy for smooth victory in the elections.

He described the inauguration of the APC women’s presidential campaign committee as the most crucial component of the 2023 campaign.

“I strongly believe that this committee will take the APC to greater heights by developing and implementing a collective and inclusive party strategy to ensure a PCS victory in the 2023 election because there is no alternative to our victory,” he said.

The president, who congratulated all members of the committee and the leadership of the party for the laudable initiative, wished the team a successful campaign season.

He, however, warned that the team must always be guided by the fact that their mission would involve going around the whole wards in the 774 local government areas of the federation campaigning for the party.

“The campaign should therefore resist the temptation for it to be turned into an Abuja activity,” he added.

The president also lauded the Nigerian women for being “most loyal and supportive” of his administration.

Mr Buhari, therefore, charged the women to extend the same support he had been enjoying from them to the party’s presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, and the vice presidential candidate, kashim Shettima, as well as other APC candidates during and after the 2023 general elections.

The president also directed the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, in conjunction with the Minister of Women’s Affairs, to work closely with the office of the first lady and the National Assembly to ensure the passage of bills aimed at creating a level playing field for Nigerian women.

The Minister of Transportation, Mua’zu Jaji Sambo, has said no ransom was paid for the release of the remaining 23 victims of the Kaduna train attack.

The Minister disclosed this while briefing journalists in Abuja on Friday.

He said although diplomacy was involved in their release, no kobo was paid.

Recall that on March 28, 2022, terrorists planted explosive devices on the rail track, forcing the train headed for Kaduna to derail.

At least nine persons lost their lives while releases were secured at various intervals till 5th October, 2022, when the last batch of 23 victims were released.

Commenting on the development, the minister said, “On 11th August, the President Federal Republic of Nigeria received at the Presidential Villa relatives of the victims and further assurances was given to the fact that Government was working assiduously to secure the release of the remaining hostages.

“Before this visit, I have also in my capacity as the Minister of Transportation, having just resumed duty a few weeks, met and addressed the relatives of the kidnapped victims where I asked them to cooperate with security operatives if the need arises and assured them that their loved ones that has been kidnapped will be released as it is paramount to Government,” he said.

He said with their release, “this day will therefore remain memorable in the annals of the country and every person who contributed in any way to the release of the victims has every reason to be happy for contributing to the Nation’s glory.”

He noted that the FG suspended Commercial train services on that route since March.

“It is now six months and 7 days that the commercial train service on the route had been suspended and it is imperative to also let you know that the reconstruction and repairs of the damaged rail line was carried out by indigenous Engineers of the Nigerian Railway Corporation” he noted.

The Minister said with the entire victims now released, the ministry will begin the process of opening the Abuja-Kaduna train service.

He however noted that before the train service will resume, appropriate security measures will be out in place for the security of train service users.

He said in the next three months, a sustainable security architecture would have been put in place for the trains to resume.

The minister also indicated that the victims are receiving treatment and rehabilitation.

He pledged government support to enable them heal.

Gunmen Kill Officer, Burn Down Police Station In Enugu

4

At least a policeman was killed when gunmen attacked Inyi Divisional Police Headquarters in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State in the wee hours of Sunday.

The station was set ablaze while the attackers reportedly broke into the armoury and carted away guns and ammunition.

In a video of the attack, two corpses were seen in front of the station.

In a social media post, residents were warned to be security conscious.

“Warning! Achi, Inyi, Ojiriver, Ufuma, Umunze, Ajari, Arondiizogu, those axes are facing security challenges, Ngwo Iri sons & daughters, lets always be security cautious and avoid night movement, above all, always commit our going out & coming in into the blood of Almighty Jesus Christ, the saviour,” the post read.

There has been a rise in insecurity in the South East, with concern by stakeholders that insecurity could affect the 2023 elections.

The police have blamed attacks on the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN), its armed wing, but the group has always distanced itself from the attack.

On Saturday, IPOB stated that it has no intention of disrupting election in Igboland in 2023.

IPOB Media and Publicity Secretary of the group, Emma Powerful, in a statement on Saturday, said there is no truth in the claim circulating that the group planned to disrupt election in 2023 in Igboland.

“The IPOB leadership has for umpteenth time stated unequivocally that part of our modus operandi in our agitation for freedom has never been, is not and will not be violent agitation.

“This explains our consistent demand for the United Nations (UN) to organize a referendum in the Biafran territory for the Biafran people to determine their destiny. To this effect, IPOB is neither contemplating nor will it encourage or sponsor anyone or group to disrupt the Nigeria shambolic selection process called election.

“IPOB has constantly made it public that we have no interest in and cannot legitimize the aberration they call election in Nigeria. We are a focused, determined and disciplined freedom fighting movement not political thugs and IPOB is devoted to the cause of liberating our people from subjugation and from modern day slavery and neo-colonialism and will not allow ourselves to be distracted from this very objective,” he stated.

Soon after its arrival at the Lagos airport, the NDLEA called for a joint examination of the consignment with other stakeholders and after its information was confirmed by all, the 52 cartons of the seized substance which are above the recommended threshold for medical use and banned in the country, were moved to the Agency’s facility.

In the same vein, another bid to export through the airport 15 parcels of cannabis and 600grams of tramadol 225mg concealed in a sack of crayfish to Dubai, UAE was equally thwarted by operatives who seized the consignment and subsequently arrested a freight agent, Osahor Alex Ekwueme, who presented it for export.

It’s A Miracle Nigeria Is Still One – Adeboye

0

It is a miracle that Nigeria is still one till date, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has said.

He spoke on Friday night at the 2022 International Youth Convention of the church.

His words: “I will tell you the truth: That Nigeria is still one up till this moment is a sign of a miracle, it shows God still answers prayers.

“But if you want something and you haven’t got it yet, you will pray more. After all, He (God) said “pray till your joy be full, whether you believe it or not, one day, and I believe it won’t be long, our joy will be full.”

The cleric went on to declare seven days of fasting and prayer, saying “there is a God on His throne and he still answers prayers.

“From November 26 to December 2, as many of you as possible are invited to fast and pray with me. It’s only for seven days. We want to pray surprisingly for ourselves. I will tell you more details later but whatever is going on in Nigeria today is the fault of us Christians.

“Why? Because God said if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray, He said He will hear from heaven and heal our land. Who are the people to pray? My people.

“The church is the only organisation in the world that is bold enough to say we are children of God. So, we are the people called by His name that is why they call us Christians. We are the ones to pray if we want our land to be healed.”

Ibadan Youths Stage Protest Against EFCC Over Illegal Arrest

9

Scores of youths on Thursday in Ibadan, Oyo State capital staged a peaceful protest against alleged illegal arrest and detention of innocent youths by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The placard-carrying youths besieged the state Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, in a convoy of over 20 vehicles, while displaying banners with various inscriptions and chanted solidarity songs to express their displeasure with the conduct of the anti-graft agency.

Some of the placards read: “End EFCC”; “It is unjust for EFCC to arrest innocent merely on phantom and unverified allegation” and “EFCC leave us alone”.

The protesting youths, in their 20s and 30s, barricaded entrance to the secretariat, making visitors and others stranded for several hours.

The protest led to heavy traffic gridlock along Bodija, Parliament Road and Total Garden Roads, among other areas in the axis.

The protesters alleged that the operatives of the agency had virtually turned themselves into a “vendetta mafia” and were assaulting innocent youths.

While calling for review and reform of the agency’s activities, the youths accused EFCC of carrying out illegal house searches and arrests in their operations.

The spokesperson of the protesters, Olamide Ayobami, said: “We are tired of indiscriminate arrest and detention by EFCC officers.

“The operatives are in the habit of entering our homes without a warrant of arrest to intimidate us, accusing us of internet fraud and forcefully detained us over mere allegations.

“We have our legitimate livelihoods and these officers do arrest us because we are living fine.

“We want government to intervene and prevail on EFCC to stop harassing us.”

Also a protester, who simply identified himself as Samuel, an Engineer and Realtor, said that on many occasions the operatives of the agency pounced on him, accusing him of being into fraud.

“We are not asking them not to do their job, but they should do it in accordance with the dictate of the law.

“They bust people, collect their phones and search it through. What kind of thing is that?,” he said.

Another protesters, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that they were expressing their grievances agitating against indiscriminate arrest by the EFCC, who many times accused them of being fraudsters.

However, Sunday Odukoya, the Executive Assistant to Governor Seyi Makinde on Security, declined comment on the youths’ protest.

We’ve Murdered Rigging In Nigeria, Says INEC

0

With the signing of the Electoral Act, 2022, and the Bimodal Voter Registration System, BVAS, coupled with other strict measures launched by the commission, rigging has been completely ‘murdered’, ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has said.

The commission also expressed optimism that the 2023 general elections would not reek of corrupt practices but would be free, fair and credible.

The National Chairman, INEC, Mahmood Yakubu, said this at a breakfast seminar, organised by Christian Men’s Fellowship, St. James’ Anglican Church, Asokoro, in Abuja.

The Chairman, who was represented by the Deputy Director voters, Voter Education Provider, Election Monitoring/Observation, Chukwuemeke Ugbaoja, said strict and lucid measures would be employed to ascertain the authenticity of results.

He said: “With the Electoral Act 2022, we have murdered rigging of elections in this country, and we have buried it. I want to tell you with all ears of authority, that that was the greatest thing that has happened to this country.

“There is no way anybody can vote two times in this country again. It is not possible. The machine is there, you bring your voters card, they match it to the machine because your name and particulars have been configured into that machine. The card is placed side by side with the machine; your particulars would come up and if your particular did not come up, it means you don’t belong to that particular unit.

“Now suppose it comes up and your fingerprints did not show up, your facial did not come up which means it strayed into that machine, you will not vote and as you put your finger prints and it marks good and the machine records you. If your finger print fails, they will take your photographs and the moment the machine is placed before you, it records that you are the authentic owner of the card and you’re given a ballot to vote.”

He, however, warned political parties and all other stakeholders with ulterior motives during the elections to desist as any suspicious move may attract severe consequences.

On his part, the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Alkali Baba Usman, represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP, Bode Ajajuni, said: “the Nigerian Police Force and other security stakeholders will exhibit professionalism and impartiality to ensure a free, fair and credible election, 2023.”

During his keynote address, Director, Abuja School of Social of Political Thoughts, Professor, Sam Amadi, said the major roles of Christians in any country is centered on leadership; to enforce divine order; to fight for justice and defend the oppressed.

He urged Christians across the country not to shy away from politics, adding that leaving elections for all comers may disadvantageously affect on the Christian faith.
