23 Million Nigerians Lost Their Jobs Under Buhari – Atiku

0

President Muhammadu Buhari has overseen a regime in which over 23 million Nigerians lost their jobs, pushing more people into poverty, says ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Mr Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, also lamented that Nigeria’s economy was “crawling” instead of growing, and Nigerians were miserable under Mr Buhari’s rule.

“The Nigerian economy is crawling rather than growing,” the PDP standard-bearer stated.

The former vice president noted that per capita income, “a measure of citizens’ well-being, has progressively fallen since 2015 because of declining output and a fast-growing population.”

He added, “Nigerians are worse off today than they were in 2015.”

“More Nigerians are poorer and more miserable today than in 2015,” Mr Abubakar further stated. “Basic commodities are now beyond the reach of the average Nigerian. A loaf of bread costs 100 per cent more today than it did in 2020.”

Mr Abubakar, Nigeria’s vice president between 1999-2007, disclosed this while speaking Tuesday at the Private Sector Economic Forum organised by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) in Lagos.

“Under the present administration, our people are not working. More than 23 million people are out of jobs,” Mr Abubakar claimed. “In just five years between 2015 and 2020, the number of fully employed people dropped by 54 per cent, from 68 million to 31 million people.”

The opposition presidential candidate was once in the same party, APC, as Mr Buhari.

On Friday, however, Mr Buhari claimed the Nigerian economy was growing under his watch despite the COVID-19 pandemic disruption, Russia-Ukraine war and internal crises besetting the country.

“In this period, challenges faced by the world have been many, including lockdowns as COVID-19 raged; disruptions to supply chains around the world, and sharp fluctuations in prices,” the Nigerian leader explained. “Our economy continues to grow despite the adverse effects of rising interest rates, a stronger U.S. dollar and higher inflation across the world.”

My Regime Has Done Well, Says Buhari

1

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, said his regime has done “extremely well” considering the limited resources available to it.

The President, spoke during a stakeholders’ meeting at the Imo State Government House in Owerri, the state capital, after inaugurating the Owerri-Orlu Road, phase one of the Owerri-Okigwe Road and the state House of Assembly complex rebuilt by the administration of the state governor, Hope Uzodimma.

He said his regime was able to achieve much despite the scarce resources at his disposal.

“This administration has done extremely well. I had to say it because those who are supposed to say it are not doing so. I don’t know why,” the President said.

He extolled his regime for dislodging Boko Haram terrorists in the North East and tackling infrastructural decay which he said he inherited from the Peoples Democratic Party’s administration in 2015.

He commended Uzodimma for inviting him for the second time in a year to inaugurate projects executed by his administration.

He promised to continue to support all states irrespective of political affiliations, to deliver infrastructure assets.

According to him, the Federal Government will continue to support the government of Imo State to ensure that it continues to provide the dividends of democracy to the people.

“This support is equally available to all the states of the federation irrespective of the differences in political party affiliations,” Buhari assured.

While saluting the Imo governor for prioritising construction and institutional reforms in the past three years, the President said his regime will leave a legacy of major development projects across the country.

Commending Uzodimma for his efforts in developing the state, Buhari said, “You have written your history.”

In his address, Uzodimma said the roads Buhari inaugurated were abandoned by previous administrations for over decades.

The governor who said that his administration had constructed 105 roads in less than three years of his administration, averred that the economy of the state would in turn be boosted.

Tinubu Healthy, APC Tells Obi, Decries Defections

0

The Presidential Campaign Council of the All Progressives Congress on Tuesday says contrary to speculations, its presidential flag bearer, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, is hale and hearty.

The camp of the former Lagos State governor described the national leader of the APC as a Trojan horse, who works assiduously for 20 hours each day.

The clarification is coming against the backdrop of the allegation by Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, that Tinubu is not fit to rule the country.

The former governor of Anambra State also subtly knocked the APC presidential candidate at Monday’s retreat organised by LP in Abuja when he charged Nigerians to elect a leader they trust against one who sees the presidency as his turn to rule.

He said, “Next year’s elections will not be based on ethnicity. It will not be by turn, it is nobody’s turn. It must not be by connection. The election next year must be based on character and trust; it must be based on competence.”

Reacting in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, Director of Media and Publicity for APC Presidential Campaign Council, Bayo Onanuga, described Obi as an ‘incurable liar.’

This comes as all former aspirants of the All Progressives Congress under the aegis of APC360, have called on the party’s presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to urgently set in motion measures to halt the gale of defection that has hit the party in recent weeks, saying “it is dangerous.”

Meanwhile, two chieftains of the All Progressives Congress in Bayelsa State, Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe and Ebikitin Diongoli have led their supporters back to the ruling People’s Democratic Party in the state.

Also, the South-South Zonal Organising Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Dr Blessing Agbomhere, has warned supporters and leaders of the ruling party to desist from hobnobbing with Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, ahead of the 2023 elections.

Agbomhere gave the warning in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday.

Lambasting Obi, a livid Onanuga urged Nigerians to ask if the Labour Party presidential candidate has bagged a medical certificate for him to declare Tinubu as unwell for the presidency.

The statement partly read, “We want to make it crystal clear to all the traducers of the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate that Asiwaju Tinubu is not ill. He is hale and hearty. A man, who works for 20 hours a day, meeting people and strategizing about finding solutions to Nigeria’s problems, cannot be said to be ill. We make bold to say that our candidate is as fit as the fiddle.

“We find these statements unbecoming of a man who nurses the ambition to be Nigeria’s next President. Since he is not Asiwaju’s doctor and is not privy to his medical record, Obi has again disgracefully elevated what has for long been a beer parlour gossip and social media lie being propagated by his IPOB supporters. Obi in his characteristic manner is amplifying falsehood, which should not have a place in a decent political campaign.

“We believe that political leaders should be guided in their utterances and be sticklers for the truth, but Obi has thrown all caution to the wind, pronouncing on issues he has no moral and professional competence to make a judgment call on.”

Mamu Aided Local, International Terrorist Groups – DSS

0

The Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja, yesterday, gave the Department of State Services, DSS, permission to further detain the Abuja-Kaduna train kidnap negotiator, Mr. Tukur Mamu, for 60 days.

The detention order, granted by Justice Nkeonye Maha, is to allow the security agency to conclude its ongoing investigations into Mamu’s alleged involvement with terrorists.

It will be recalled that Mamu was, on September 6, arrested at Cairo, Egypt, while on his way to Saudi Arabia for lesser Hajj with his family members.

He was subsequently brought back to the country and immediately taken into custody by the DSS.

In an ex-parte motion it brought before the court, yesterday, the DSS sought permission to further retain him in its custody.

The agency, in an affidavit it filed before the court, alleged that Mamu aided both local and international terrorist organisations.

DSS, in the said affidavit that was deposed to by one Hamza Pandogari, maintained that Mamu who is the publisher of Dessert Herald, used the cover of journalism to perpetrate his deeds.

It told the court that the detained publisher was on his way to attend a clandestine meeting with top terrorist commanders, when he was intercepted in Egypt through the help of the International Police, Interpol.

The DSS alleged that preliminary investigations revealed that Mamu might be involved in terrorism financing, saying “the self acclaimed Kaduna train negotiator exploited the opportunity to perpetrate, aid and abets as well as render support to both local and international terrorist organisations.

“The respondent was intercepted by the Nigerian foreign partners at Cairo, Egypt, on 6th September, 2022, while on his way to Saudi Arabia for a clandestine meeting with commanders and top leaders of terrorists organisations across the globe.

“Upon his interception, and subsequent repatriation back to Nigeria, a duly signed search warrant was executed in his residence and office at No. 4, Ali Ladan Street, Sabon Kawo GRA and No. 14, Mamona Road, Anguwan Sarki, Kaduna State and various exhibits and items to establish his complicity with terrorists were recovered”, the affidavit read.

More so, the DSS, told the court that following the execution of the search warrant, various incriminating items were recovered from Mamu’s residence and office.

It listed some of the 34 recovered items to include; 151 dollars, 20 pounds sterling; 1, 530 Indian Rupees; one Saudi Riyald; 70 Dirham; one million, five hundred and six thousand naira; and 16 assorted foreign coins.

The DSS also alleged that two packs of pump action cartridges; 16 ATM (auto-mated machine) cards from both local and foreign banks; seven cheque books of different banks; six laptops; four tablets; 24 handsets and three international passports belonging to Mamu; one firearm licence; eight pieces of Nigerian Army uniforms; 16 pieces of Nigerian Naval uniforms, were also recovered.

“Preliminary investigation so far established, amongst others, the offences of logistic supplier, aiding and abetting acts of terrorism as well as terrorism financing against him. The defendant (Mamu) has used the cover of his profession as a journalist to aid both local and international terrorist groups.

“The action of the defendant has orchestrated the untimely death of several security personnel in North Central and North East parts of Nigeria. The defendant has discreetly given several information to bandits and terrorists that escalated various acts of terrorism in Nigeria.

Kwankwaso Won’t Step Down For Tinubu, Atiku ― NNPP Chairman

15

National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rufai Ahmed Alkali, has said his party presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, would not surrender his presidential aspiration to the standard bearer of the two predominant parties.

Alkali made the clarification in a statement issued in Abuja, on Tuesday.

Alkali wondered why chieftains of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who have since dismissed the NNPP as insignificant are now threatened by its rising profile.

He said it was an effort in futility for any political party to be sponsoring any news item of the NNPP Presidential candidate stepping down for its candidate.

“Who is afraid of the NNPP Presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso.”

“The whole issue is that over the past three months people are just insisting that he was going to hand off his ambition to APC or PDP, or they would say he has an issue in Kogi where there was known, or they would go and close our office in Borno State for no reason, or they would go to Kano to take Senator Shekarau thinking that they have depleted the party. In fact, they are making him better and bigger. All these they are doing, the question is who is afraid of Kwankwaso.

“Only recently they said NNPP is nothing but now they are running helter-skelter to see how to stop NNPP and to stop Kwankwaso. Having tried every way to find something against our Presidential candidate and they couldn’t they have resort to wooing and reckless propaganda.”

Prof. Alkali said that the party was waiting for the campaign to start so it can officially bring out its manifesto to the doorsteps of Nigerians.

“We are not giving in to inanities, we are waiting for the campaign to start so we can roll out our campaign promises and manifesto.”

Nigeria Broke Under APC, Says Atiku

0

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has said that Nigeria is broke under the All Progressives Congress.

Atiku said Nigeria had been running on budget deficits since the APC came to power in 2015.

Atiku said these at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce & Industry on Tuesday as he was rolling out his economic agenda for the country if he eventually won the 2023 elections.

He said, “Nigeria is broke. Nigeria under the APC-led government has consistently run on budget deficits since it came to power in 2015. These budget deficits are often above the 3% threshold permissible under the Fiscal Responsibility Law.”

“For the first time in Nigeria’s history, the FGN paid more in debt service than it earned! By spending more than 100% of its revenue for debt service, Nigeria is breaching one of the applicable debt-sustainability thresholds.

”The failure of leadership by the APC-led government is staring every Nigerian in the face as the country’s economic, social, political and security challenges persist and assume frightening dimensions.

Atiku said Nigeria had the potential to double its Gross Domestic Product by 2030 and achieve a per capita income of approximately US$5,000, adding that “Our economic growth and development agenda seeks primarily to stimulate the growth of the economy. It envisions an economy that is modern, dynamic, and competitive, capable of taking its rightful place among the top 20 economies of the world.”

“We anticipate growth from our policies that seek to revitalize the real sectors including agriculture, manufacturing and MSMEs.

“Re-building infrastructure and reducing infrastructure deficit will enhance the carrying capacity of the economy and unleash growth and wealth creation.

“We will elevate production for export to a top policy priority and long-term investment priority and promote export of manufactured goods. ”

Atiku said he would deliver on these goals by, “First, a warm handshake with the private sector. We will support the private sector to drive growth. We will establish strong partnership in investing in infrastructure, creating jobs, income and in the fight against poverty.

“We will listen to the private sector more. Understanding the private sector and securing their buy-in when policies are designed will determine the success of our economic growth and development agenda.”

“Through regular dialogue with the private sector, we will build consensus, improve trust between us and make new reform initiatives easier to implement and sustainable. There will be more clarity, coherence, and consistency (the 3Cs) in policy. Nothing could be more threatening to investment flows than an environment that is full of policy flip-flops,” he said among other things, noting that he would reduce poverty.
