Christians’ll Get Key Appointments In Tinubu’s Cabinet – Support Group

0

The Asiwaju Ahmed Bola-Shettima presidential support group has said the standard bearer of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Bola Tinubu, will appoint Christians to key positions of authority in his cabinet, if elected Nigeria’s next president in 2023.

This was disclosed by the group’s Director-General, AIG Abdulsalami Iyaji (rtd) at a press briefing held in Abuja yesterday.

According to him, the move would allay the fears and douse tension raised in many quarters by those opposed to Tinubu’s choice of Senator Kashim Shettima, a Muslim, as running mate.

He said, “Nigerians should focus more on good governance than religion and ethnicity during the general elections. Does governance end with the President and Vice President?

“There are lots of offices in government, such that the totality of their influence determines how the president and his vice operate. However, it is unfortunate that down the line, Nigerians don’t see things that way.

“When Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senator Kashim Shettima come on board, Christians will be prominent in virtually all areas of governance, and by so doing, the APC standard nearer will douse the fears and paranoia that has trailed the Muslim-Muslim ticket.

“The conduct of Tinubu and Shettima will make the fears linked to the same faith ticket to become irrelevant such that in subsequent elections, religion will no longer be an issue. They will demonstrate what it takes to put aside religion and ethnicity as far as governance is concerned.”

Iyaji also said Nigeria’s growth had been severely hampered by inflation, insecurity, hunger, poverty, inadequate infrastructure, but assured that Tinubu will tackle these issues on a national scale they way he did during his stint as governor of Lagos from 1999-2007.

Consequently, he explained that the goal of the support group was to ensure the electorate had adequate information concerning the policy and aims of the APC and its presidential flagbearer before the 2023 elections.

The revelation by Jihad Analytics showed that the Boko Haram and ISWAP Terrorist groups were mostly responsible for the attacks.

I Never Said University Education Not For Everybody – Umahi

0

The Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief David Umahi, has denied ever saying that university education is not everybody.

MAIDAWAAREWA reported that Umahi said university education is not for everybody. He spoke against the backdrop of the ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff of Nigerian Universities, ASUU, at the nation’s varsities.

He said he believed in education “I never said that university education is not for everybody. I will not say so because I believe so much in education, which is why we prioritise education. I built the most sophisticated and best medical university you can find anywhere in west Africa. It is because I believe in it.

‘‘I have renovated and built a lot of secondary and primary schools. I believe in the quality education of our people. I never said university education is not for everybody. As a matter of fact, university education should be for everybody.”

Umahi also added that vocational and secondary school education should be compulsory for every Nigerian.

ASUU On Mission To Destroy Varsity Education, Says NANS

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has carpeted the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for extending its strike indefinitely.

The students’ body accused the university teachers of embarking on a mission to crumple the nation’s university education system and systematically promote private universities where many of them have their children.

In a statement yesterday, NANS President Adedayo Sunday Asefon said: “We have taken the time to review the decision of ASUU to declare an indefinite strike after the ongoing six-month strike. We consider the decision not only unpatriotic, unnecessary but wicked and definitely not in the interest of our nation or the tertiary education system in Nigeria.

“Such a decision was easy for ASUU because many of their leaders do not have their wards in public universities and still keep employment at various private universities around the country. As such, they are not affected by their attempt to collapse the sector for their selfish and inconsiderate gains.

“ASUU had succeeded, initially, to masquerade their strike as an action in the interest of the tertiary education system in Nigeria and in the interest of the teeming Nigerian students.

“But events of recent weeks have made it abundantly clear that ASUU has an ulterior motive, which is to collapse university education system in Nigeria and systematically promote private universities where many of them have their children, stakes and perhaps where they receive payment for the job of collapsing public universities in Nigeria

“We, therefore, call on the Federal Government to investigate the leadership of ASUU with the aim of unraveling their motivation for their insistence on collapsing the public university system in Nigeria.”

But the Chairman of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) chapter of ASUU, Dr. Ray Chikogu, has said there would be no going back on the comprehensive, total and indefinite strike by the union.

In a statement yesterday in Benin, the Edo State capital, Chikogu said: “We urge the general public to disregard the laughable piece of deliberate misinformation and state unequivocally that ASUU UNIBEN is irrevocably committed to executing the current strike to its logical conclusion or until such a time that the National Executive Council (NEC) of our union deems it fit to direct otherwise.

“The branch is more than aware that the intelligentsia has a moral obligation to rescue public tertiary education from the grips of retrogressive forces in the corridors of power who insist on imposing forced labour, paying slave wages, and pricing access to quality education out of the reach of the ordinary Nigerian child.”

Also, Nasarawa State University in Keffi will soon resume academic activities, Governor Abdullahi Sule has said.

The governor said his administration had agreed to pay the salaries of the university’s workers, which he said was one of the key demands of ASUU.

Sule announced this while addressing members of the State Executive Council (Exco) at their fifth meeting at the Government House yesterday in Lafia, the state capital.

The governor said the management of the university as well as the non-teaching unions, namely the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU), had agreed to resume work.

Also, Vice Chancellor of Osun State University (UniOsun) , Prof. Professor Clement Adebooye, has said the varsity would not overshoot its admission quota, despite the pressure mounted on it by admissions seekers due to the ongoing ASUU strike.

Adebooye, who addressed reporters yesterday in Osogbo, the state capital, said: “There is pressure on us over the numbers of candidates applying for our school because of the ongoing ASUU strike. Despite the pressure, we will not overshoot our quota. We have that reputation that we don’t break the law. We will not go beyond our capacity.”

Nigeria Needs Vibrant, Visionary Leaders – Abdulsalami

0

Former military Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, has said Nigeria needs vibrant and visionary leaders that would steer the country on the path of glory.

Speaking when he hosted Professor Christopher Imumolen, Presidential Candidate of Accord Party in the 2023 elections, said the country was in dire need of vibrant, youthful leaders to seize the initiative and retire a fading breed of the old guard.

“I think the old ones should fade away gracefully and allow young people to take over,” Abubakar said at his Minna, Niger State capital, residence.

“What we can do as former leaders is to mentor and tutor them in whatever way we can in order for them to lead the country. As a matter of fact, this is the time Nigerians should begin to support young, vibrant and visionary leaders that would steer the country on the path of glory.”

Speaking earlier to a retinue of reporters at the home of the former leader and elder statesman, Professor Imumolen had reiterated his stance on the role the next generation of leaders like him should play in taking the country to its promised land.

“We need to reposition the country on the path of development and sustainable growth,” he said.

“And if that must be done, Nigerians should start looking at selecting those who have a track record in leadership at various levels from both the private and public sector,” he added.

Nigeria’s former military head of state, Abdulsalami Abubakar, has thrown his weight behind the candidacy of Professor Christopher Imumolen.

Abdulsalami midwifed the process that ushered in the 4th Republic which began with the democratically elected government of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999.

Buhari Told To Sell 8 Presidential Jets, Pay ASUU

0

President Muhammadu Buhari has been advised on how to resolve the prolonged strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

Buhari was urged to sell eight jets in his presidential fleet and use the proceeds to meet the demands of ASUU.

This suggestion was made by a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, in a series of tweets.

Omokri pointed out that the Nigerian presidential fleet was worth over $200 million, while ASUU demanded less than $100 million.

He faulted the fact that the presidential fleet has about 10 jets to serve one president.

According to Omokri: “How much is ASUU asking for? Less than $100 million to fund universities. Buhari has 10 Presidential jets worth over $200 million.

“Why not sell eight and use the money for ASUU? The British PM does not have an official jet. These are the kinds of things Atiku would do!

“Nigeria has no national airline to serve 210 million people. But we have 10 Presidential jets to serve 1 President. No be juju be that?

“That is why ASUU is adamant. Money is not our problem. Our issue is how we spend the little money we have! Atiku will change that!”

ASUU had been on strike since February 2022 over the government’s refusal to meet a 2019 agreement.

Part of the face-off is due to the government’s insistence on using IPPIS against UTAS to pay lecturers.

Meanwhile, ASUU had declared an indefinite strike following a breakdown of negotiations with the government.

Peter Obi Vows To Increase Electricity Or Leave Presidency

0

Labour Party, LP, Presidential candidate and former Anambra State governor, Mr. Peter Obi, has vowed to increase electricity generation in Nigeria, or quit as president after his first term.

Obi made the vow, while addressing a packed audience at the prestigious Beverly Hilton Los Angeles flag-off of his US speaking tour.

Obi, who flew in from Toronto, Canada, listed countries that had doubled their power supply in a few years to include Egypt, which he recently went to understudy, and lamented that even the president of South Africa, which produces 50,000 megawatts of electricity, had just declared a state of emergency in the sector for being too little but Nigeria, which produces a paltry 4,000 megawatts for over 200 million people, has not.

“I will increase power generation in four years. This is not a guarantee. I am saying if I don’t do it, I will leave the office,” Obi said.

He bemoaned the fact that no one was held to account in Nigeria, pointing out that when they entered office, they reneged on what they had promised, claiming they didn’t know what it entailed, saying “in Nigeria, people don’t do what is expected; people do what is inspected!”

He challenged the enthusiastic Nigerians in America to hold him accountable when he comes to power to deliver on what he promised.

Obi, whose speech was interrupted with applause and chants of “Obi” said no one was asking for perfection but at least leaders should show direction and efforts.

Narrating an interaction he had with a member of a rival party on the flight to Toronto the previous day, Obi asked him if he knew the pilot. When the man said, “no,” he further asked, “but you trust him that he is taking you to Toronto as he announced?”

However the problem with governance in Nigeria, he stated, was that after promising a flight to Toronto, the pilots of the state would enter the cockpit and begin to make excuses that they didn’t know the airplane needed fuel and that the destination was Lagos.

Concluding, the guest speaker declared: “Election of 2023 must not be based on religion, tribe, connection or entitlement but character, competence, capacity and commitment.”

Responding to questions as to how he proposed to increase power generation, Obi stated that he discovered that one of the companies responsible for Egypt’s power transformation is present in Nigeria so he decided to investigate why they haven’t replicated similar success.

He said his findings will remain confidential for now, but there was no magic involved in achieving it.

Civil Servants More Corrupt Than Politicians – Senate C’ttee

0

The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions says its findings after interface with government agencies revealed that corruption is more endemic in the civil service than in other sectors.

According to the chairman of the committee, Senator Ayo Akinyelure (PDP, Ondo), civil servants are more corrupt than the political class.

He stated this in Abuja Wednesday at a two-day workshop on Governance, Accountability, Ethics and Due Process in Public and Private Sector Establishments in Nigeria.

He said for the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to win the anti-graft war, it must first get rid of corruption in the civil service.

He said the fact that public servants spend more years in service than politicians explained “the reason corruption persists in the public sector.”

He said: “Civil servants are the masters of (governance) procedures. They spend 35 years in service; while legislators and other politicians seek for votes every four years from the people to renew their mandates.”

He stressed the need for good governance, accountability, ethics and due process across public and private sector establishments in Nigeria.

Akinyelure said: “The contemporary Nigerian society appears to have been plague-ridden with divergent problems varying from fraud, corruption, failed contracts, failed banks, insurgency and high level of insecurity.”
