A Report in June revealed that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), approved N1.15bn to purchase 10 Toyota Land Cruiser V8 vehicles for the Nigerien government.

The record which was sourced from the ‘appropriations’ page of the Ministry’s website showed that in July 2022, N1,145,000,000 was approved for payment to Kaura Motors Nigeria Limited to supply the SUVs.

It also revealed that the President had okayed the disbursement since February 2022.

Gov Zulum Visits 10 Farms In Four LGs, Explain FG Fertilizer Ban

0

The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Umara Zulum, visited 10 farmlands in four local governments area of Borno; Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Jere, Mafa and Dikwa to monitor farming activities.

During visits, Zulum, a University Professor of irrigation farming, interacted with farmers, asking them of problems they face so he could address them, with rainy season in place, majority of the farmers were seen weeding and planting across most farmlands when the governor paid them the visits.

Zulum explained to farmers that unlike in other states, Borno State was not able to procure and allocate NPK fertilizer to farmers because there was an existing ban by the federal government through office of the National Security Adviser.

“We have long been in receipt of a security letter from the office of the National Security Adviser which placed ban on the usage of urea as well as NPK across Borno State because insurgents use these fertilizer components to produce improvised explosive devices (IEDs). It will therefore not augur well for the government of Borno State to distribute that fertilizer as the case in most states”, Zulum said.

The governor however explained that the only option is to distribute liquid fertilizer.

Professor Zulum said he was excited with the turnout of farmers he met on ground during his visits and from reports he got, similar and even more farming activities in areas like southern Borno which has been more peaceful over the years.

He said it was for that reason that he directed the allocation of farm inputs and tractors to farmers in parts of Borno’s three senatorial zones: Central, South and North.

He promised to enhance his focus on agriculture especially continued strengthening of agro rangers and other security groups to sustain safe farming activities across Borno State.

I Pity Nigeria’s Next President, Says Gumi

0

A controversial Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Abubakar Gumi, has said Nigerian is suffering from “disabling diseases” under the All Progressives Congress (APC) led administration, just as he expressed pity for the next president.

The cleric said in an an opinion that Nigeria is suffering from diseases including leprosy, diabetes and HIV/AIDS.

Towards this end, he said the next president needs to be intelligent and supported by men with acumen, and not a ‘garagara’ person with an impulsive temperament that is after the praise of sentimental citizens.

“He has to act quickly and carefully, he has to center his efforts and concentration inwards not outside. I know a lot of our problems have roots in foreign interests, yet local problems must be solved locally.

“The economy is in such disarray that needs a true nationalist that will institute measures even if they are against these ‘fake’ corporate bodies that are “Draculas” sucking the blood out of the nation. Not the kind of ineffective but detrimental measures we experienced in the past, but well-studied economic measures that will not only increase the GPD but raise the per capita income of the individuals. Today in Nigeria, the middle-class income strata are almost effaced. You are either poor or extremely rich,” he said.

“In leprosy, a disease that attacks the sensory nervous system, the brain is unaware of the suffering of the extremities. The presidency which represents the brain is not getting the true picture of the grassroots suffering and the excruciating poverty breaking the masses because the feedback system is attacked by corruption, wickedness and immorality.

“In diabetes, there is abundant sugar produced in the body but it’s not getting into the body tissues for metabolism and its excess is left in the bloodstream destroying vital organs. With HIV, the defense system is weakened to the extent that a small group of rag-tag criminals can kill the nation and bring it to a halt,” he added.

He further noted that the recent BBC Africa Eye and Daily Trust documentaries about the insurgency in Zamfara State had exposed the ethnic and tribal undertones as the real genesis of the mayhem the North Western region is experiencing.

He averted that the crimes were committed by both sides of the divide but unfortunately, the outside world sees one side as the only criminal, and thus the government acted in such a line of thinking messing up the conflict and applying the wrong measures of communal conflict resolution.

Prolonged ASUU Strike Will Expose Our Children To Criminality, Parents Lament

0

Some parents of students in Nigerian universities have expressed concerns over the danger and implications of the prolonged Academic Staff Union Of Universities (ASUU) strike, which has crippled academic activities for more than five months, leaving students stranded.

These parents have complained that their idleness could serve as a recipe and a breeding opportunity for politicians and criminal elements who would want to recruit them for nefarious activities. Others complain of the extra expenses spent to feed these students while they are at home, seeing as it was not planned for.

President Muhammadu Buhari has given the minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, two weeks ultimatum to resolve the issues surrounding the strike, however, while waiting for the two weeks to elapse, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) during the just concluded nationwide protest, insisted that the federal government must meet all the unions’ demands.

NLC and the university based unions of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigeria University (SSANU), Non-Academic Union of Allied and Education Institutions (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) had with one voice ( “People United Cannot Be Defeated”) maintained a no shifting ground on the strike, until the federal government meets their demands.

ASUU national president, Emmanuel Osodeke, during the mega rally in Abuja, even insisted that the union was ready to remain in strike for two years, should the government fail to meet their demands.

While expressing hopes on a fruitful outcome of the ultimatum given by the president, the parents reminded Nigerians that keeping their children at home, while election campaign is at hand, could pose a security threat due to how politicians in this clime use youths as political thugs.

Re- echoing the popular axiom “An idle man is a devil’s workshop”, a parent of two students of university of Ibadan, Mr Femi Adeyemi told us that he can’t imagine why Nigeria’s tertiary education sector will suffer such a setback in the 21st century.

“The strike is a setback to our education system that I can’t even imagine, it’s painful for those of us who can’t afford expensive schools for our children. And the worst of it is the security threat that comes with their idleness at home. What if politicians recruit them as thugs for upcoming election? So let the government find a way to resolve this university strike once and for all,” Mr Adeyemi said.

Another parent of a student of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Mr Adamu Abubakar said he was very disappointed with the way federal government let the strike to linger longer than usual.

Abubakar said,” I don’t think government has the will to end this strike but my pain is our children could end up doing what we don’t want if the strike persists.”

Senator Shettima said this at the one-year memorial service for Dr Emmanuel Abiodun, father of the governor of Ogun State, held at the St. James Anglican Church, Iperu-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area in Ogun State.

His words: “We need to build a new nation because the hope of the black man is on Nigeria. The onus is on us to secure the future of our children yet unborn.

“I want to assure Nigerians that we are going to be just and fair to all. We are going to be all-inclusive because no society can thrive on injustice. Ours will be an all-encompassing, all-embracing government.

“We will build a country of our dreams where people are judged by their character irrespective of their political affiliations, religious persuasions, sectional or tribal ground.”

In his remarks, Governor Abiodun called on Nigerians to continue praying to God to see the nation through this difficult and trying time.

Abiodun said: “I want to ask that we continue to pray that God Almighty see us through this time. These are really difficult times in the history of the nation called Nigeria. We are seeing things that we have never seen before. I don’t have any doubt that we are passing events and in no time, God will see us through. We are the people God has treated wonderfully and He fortified us with lots of endurance and by his grace, we will rise to the top.”
