0

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has asked for increased collaboration between the government of the United Kingdom and Nigeria in order to promote issues of mutual benefits to both countries.

Atiku made the call, according to a statement on Monday, when a delegation of the British High Commission, led by Catriona Laing, met with him at his residence in Abuja.

He said, “The bilateral ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom have a rich history and it is important for both countries to leverage on that to promote issues that are of mutual concern.

“I expect the United Kingdom to play a more active role in the survival of democracy in Nigeria, and I am confident that the presidential election in 2023 will be free and fair. I decry the poor state of affairs in the country and solicit UK assistance, especially in the area of training and intelligence sharing.”

Atiku added that if given the opportunity, he would, among other things, abolish the multiple exchange rate regimes, reduce the tax to encourage genuine manufacturers, promote real investments and boost agriculture in order to create employment for the country’s teeming population.

In her response, Laing said, “The meeting with the former Vice President, was part of the ongoing engagement of the UK government to enhance democracy and credible elections in Nigeria. Hunger, Hardship, Major Legacies Of APC-Led Govt – Mao Ohuabunwa

0

Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, has decried the high level of hunger and economic hardship in the country, regretting the starvation has become one of the major legacies of the All Progressive Congress, APC-led Federal Government.

The former Leader, ECOWAS Parliament, made the remark during the monthly distribution of N5000 stipends to indigent windows and the economically -challenged locals in Arochukwu ancient kingdom, Abia State, by a charitable organization, J &T Foundation.

He said that hardship had become so excruciating in the country that not too many families were sure of the next meal any longer.

According to him, the menacing activities of herdsmen which have displaced so many farmers and agrarian communities in the country pose grave threat to food security of Nigeria

Senator Ohuabunwa who represented Abia North in the eight senate, regretted that Nigeria’s economy had nosedived almost irretrievably under the watch of APC due to misgovernance and lack of coordination

He, however, encouraged the people not to dispair but to join the on-going efforts to rescue and rebuild Nigeria by helping to vote out APC in 2023.

Ohuabunwa who donated N500,000 to the Foundation for the monthly humanitarian gesture, pledged a monthly commitment of N200,000, promising to increase it to N500,000 monthly if he returns to power as Senator in 2023.

Earlier in a remark, President of the Foundation, Dr Jacob Nwosu, said that the gesture was borne out of his passion to give succour to the poor.

He urged the over 800 beneficiaries not to be sorrowful but repose confidence in God for their sustenance.

Many Lawmakers Backed Buhari’s Planned Impeachment – Sen Bulkachuwa

0
The All Progressives Congress (APC) senator who represents Bauchi North, Adamu Bulkachuwa, says many of his colleagues backed the impeachment move against President Muhammadu Buhari when it was raised.

Last week, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus in the upper chamber of the National Assembly gave Buhari a six-week ultimatum to tackle rising insecurity in the country or risk impeachment.

Speaking on Channels TV on Monday, Bulkachuwa said the impeachment threat is the last and necessary option left for the lawmakers.

He said he and his colleagues had tried in many ways to help the executive, and by extension the president to tackle insecurity in the country to no avail.

He said, “When we realised that all that have not actually worked, the security situation was getting worse and even the financial situation in the country is not improving, we thought we are just one arm of the government and we are limited in the execution of proposals and the actual enforcement of suggestions and laws; we are not responsible for all that.

“What we can do is try to draw the attention of the Executive (of the government) that we have tried everything and the only thing we have not tried is that we have to draw your attention to the fact that we have a constitutional responsibility to pull your ears at it were by way of notice of impeachment and give you a chance.”

Earlier, Elisha Abbo, another APC from Adamawa State, had publicly backed the impeachment plan, principally being driven by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members in the Senate.

Bulkachuwa’s comment came about five days after opposition senators, mostly PDP senators and their colleagues from other political parties, staged a walkout of Senate plenary in protest against the state of insecurity in the country.

Their exit was sequel to the decision of the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, to dismiss a motion on insecurity and a plan to impeach the president raised by the Senate Minority Leader, Philip Aduda.

When asked if the six-week ultimatum given to the president was enough to tackle the growing insecurity in the country, Bulkachuwa hoped that “something could happen.”

He said Buhari had since then, “met with service chiefs and within the security apparatus, so many changes have occurred.”

I’m Ready To Sacrifice For Nigeria’s Survival, Says Peter Obi

0

The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has reiterated his undying love for Nigeria and his unalterable belief in its indivisibility.

In a virtual interactive session with more than 1,000 members of his foremost support group, the Peter Obi Support Network, Obi expressed confidence that Nigeria can and will come out of the woods of failed political leadership.

He urged everyone, especially those in the diaspora, to contribute to Nigeria’s development in whatever capacity they could.

This is according to a statement signed by the Director, Strategic Communication, Peter Obi Support Network, Onwuasoanya Jones.

Emphasising how much he was ready to sacrifice for Nigeria’s survival and progress, Obi shared a story of how he had to relocate from the United Kingdom to Nigeria after spending over 10 years contributing his quota to Nigeria’s economic and social development.

Responding to a question about his plans for Nigerians living in the diaspora by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of POSN, Obi commended the efforts of diaspora Nigerians in developing the country and urged them not to relent because no matter how comfortable they get in another country, Nigeria will always be their home.

He said, “I love Nigeria irrevocably, and I believe no matter how far we travel or how successful we become outside Nigeria, we can never have another country to call our own but Nigeria. This is why I have continued to do whatever I can within my personal and group capabilities to support Nigeria’s march to greatness.”

He told the gathering that even though he has everything he needs to obtain resident permits and citizenship rights in any part of the world he wishes, he has deliberately avoided taking any resident permit from any other country of the world because he believes that Nigeria is the “only country I have.”

Obi said, “When I left the UK after residing there for over 10 years, I returned everything that belonged to them. I have a singular focus on Nigeria, and I do not think I need the citizenship or residence rights of any other country when I haven’t finished exploiting my nature-given rights and privileges as a Nigerian.

“If I am out of Nigeria today and there is a war in Nigeria, I will find a way to return to Nigeria because I will rather die in my country, Nigeria, than live free in another man’s country.”

Age Is Just A Number, Tinubu Has Exposure, Experience To Govern Nigeria – Shettima

0

Senator Kashim Shettima, the vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the coming 2023 general elections has said the standard bearer of the party, Bola Tinubu has experience and capacity to rule Nigeria.

Based on Shettima’s past speeches published by MAIDAWAAREWA, Tinubu’s running mate said age is just a number adding that those that are younger than the APC national leader can perform horribly when it comes to ruling the country.

The former Borno state governor also reiterated Tinubu’s position that President Muhammadu Buhari would not have been voted president of the country, if not for the input of the former Lagos state governor.

Shettima said, “Age is just a number. There are some younger people that can perform abysmally low. My principal has the experience, exposure and a lucid mind to add value to the nation and we are at a very critical juncture in the annals of Nigeria’s history, buffeted by all sorts of challenges, be it security, be it economy and a leader that we need is a leader who understands the dynamics of running a modern

I’ll Remain In APC Till I Die, Says El-Rufai

Kaduna state Governor Nasir El-Rufai has disclosed that he is one of the 37 people that formed the nucleus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and so he considers the party as one of his children.

The governor who spoke in a live media chat that was broadcast on all Kaduna-based radio stations on Wednesday night, dispelled rumour that he plans to defect to another party, over the choice of a running mate.

El-Rufai vowed that he will remain in APC till the end of his life, adding that ‘’the moment I leave APC, then I have quit politics altogether.’’

On the issue of removing the APC flag on his official car, the governor clarified that it is the convention that once it is 6pm, every flag is either lowered if it is foisted on a pole, or covered if it is on a vehicle

The governor said that this is not the first time that rumour mongers have associated him with all manner of plots or speculations, adding that ‘’they said I wanted to be president, then they came round to say I wanted to be running mate, now it is DG Campaign.’’

El-Rufai also reiterated that Muhammad Sani Abdullahi, former Commissioner of Planning and Budget, is still the APC candidate of Kaduna Central senatorial district, debunking the rumour that he planned to displace his protegee.

According to him, politics is about service and it is not the central focus of his life as people think.

ASUU Extend Strike By Four Weeks

0

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has extended the ongoing strike by another four weeks.

ASUU president, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, disclosed the union’s decision in a press statement on Monday.

He said the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Union took the decision after extensive deliberations on government’s past failures to abide by its own timelines in addressing the issues it raised.

“An emergency meeting of the National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) held at the Comrade Festus Iyayi National Secretariat, University of Abuja, Abuja, on Sunday, 31st July 2022. The meeting was called to review developments since NEC’s resolution to extend its roll-over strike action by another 12 weeks with effect from May 2022.”

“The NEC meeting took place against the backdrop of government’s obligations as spelt out in the Memorandum of Action (MOA) it signed with ASUU on 23rd December 2020. Specifically, NEC recalled that government’s failure to conclude the process of renegotiating the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, deploy the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS), pay outstanding arrears of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), release agreed sum of money for the revitalization of public universities (Federal and States), address proliferation and governance issues in State Universities, settle promotion arrears, release withheld salaries of academics, and pay outstanding third-party deductions led to the initial declaration of the roll-over strike on 14th February 2022.

“NEC viewed with seriousness the recent directive given by the President and Visitor to all Federal Universities that the Minister of Education, in consultation with other government officials, should resolve the lingering crisis and report to him within two weeks. The Union wonders why it had taken five full months and needless muscle-flexing for government to come to the realisation of the need for honest engagement.

“NEC acknowledged the growing understanding of the issues and the groundswell of support for the Union’s principled demand for globally competitive university education in Nigeria. Nigerian universities must not be reduced to constituency projects that merely exist on paper and our scholars must be incentivised to stay back and do what they know best, here in Nigeria.

“NEC appreciated the historic nationwide protest of 26th and 27th July 2022 organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in collaboration with Civil Society Organisations (CSO) to further create awareness on the antics of the Nigerian ruling class to destroy public education. ASUU renews its commitment to the struggles of NLC in championing the cause of the working and suffering Nigerians.

“NEC observed that non-signing of the draft renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement more than one month after it was concluded by Professor Nimi Briggs-led Committee is further tasking the patience of ASUU members nationwide.

“NEC further observed that the ongoing trial of the suspended Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Mr Ahmed Idris, on allegation of monumental fraud has vindicated ASUU’s rejection of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information (IPPIS). The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is enjoined to release reports of the latest tests on the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) vis-a-vis IPPIS without further delay. ASUU shall resist any attempt to truncate the deployment of UTAS with all legitimate means available to the Union.

“NEC noted that cumulative indifference by the political class gave vent to a pervasive atmosphere of insecurity which now threatens the seamless provision of educational services in the country. The unceremonious closure of educational institutions in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), following the recent attack on Presidential Guards, betrays a panicky measure to addressing a malignant ailment. Nothing short of a comprehensive overhaul of the security architecture of the country will sustainably address the problem.

“Following extensive deliberations and taking cognisance of Governmen€s past failures to abide by its own timelines in addressing issues raised in the 2020 FGN/ASUU Memorandum of Action (MOA), NEC resolved that the strike be rolled over for four weeks to give Government more time to satisfactorily resolve all the outstanding issues. The role-over strike action is with effect from 12.01 am on Monday, 1st August 2022”, the statement read.
