Police under fire for assigning five officers to Burna Boy

1

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has carpeted the Lagos State Police command and the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Usman Alkali Baba, for assigning five operatives of the Force to protect a musician, Burna Boy.

The rights group said this sort of deployment which is absolutely irregular, has become the norm in the police force of Nigeria.

The rights group said that explains why there is absence of preemptive actions in times of critical needs because the few operatives are all sent for private commercial jobs by their Area Commanders and Commissioners and probably by approval of the Inspector-General.

HURIWA said this following a recent incident at a Lagos nightclub, where Burna Boy’s police escorts shot at a man after the musician allegedly made passes at the man’s wife.

The Lagos State Police Commissioner’s Special Squad has since detained the five policemen attached to the singer for attempted murder.

One of the policemen was said to have shot at two fun seekers— Irebami Lawrence and another identified simply as Tolu, at Club Cubana on Victoria Island, Lagos, on Wednesday.

According to a preliminary report by the Bar Beach Police Division, the trouble started when Burna Boy and his five police escorts entered the nightclub around 4:00am on June 8.

While about four policemen waited outside, one of them, identified as Inspector Ibrahim, who was in mufti, accompanied the Grammy-Award-winning artiste into the club.

The singer was in the VIP section with three women when he allegedly spotted another woman.

However, the lady’s husband was said to have lambasted the singer, insisting that it was disrespectful for any man to make advances at his wife.

After some minutes, Burna Boy reportedly made fresh advances at the woman. This infuriated her husband further and his friends who had gathered at the club.

“As things were getting heated, Ibrahim brought out his service pistol and shot multiple times while Burna Boy was laughing,” said a senior policeman.

HURIWA quoted a media report as stating that in the process, 27-year-old Lawrence was shot in the thigh, while his friend, Tolu, was hit in the head by a bullet and this caused a commotion in the club.

It was learnt that Burna Boy and his crew then drove off to one of his properties at the Elegushi end of the Lekki-Epe Expressway before leaving for Lekki Phase 1.

Aware of what he had done, Burna Boy took the next flight out without even informing the policemen. He only made a video call to them to inform them that he had travelled to Spain.

HURIWA apportioned a greater blame to the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, accusing him of allowing five whole policemen to embark on such an illegal duty.

The group called on President Muhammadu Buhari to unbundle the Police Service Commission, PSC, and sack the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, adding that the Chairman has displayed gross incompetence and unwillingness to provide leadership to the commission.

It also called on the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice to bring the musician, Burna Boy and his killer police squad to justice to demonstrate that in a democracy no one is above the law.

Efforts by Lawan to make Mr Machina to step down for the president of the Senate proved abortive as the senatorial candidate refused and insisted that he won’t withdraw.

Sources said that Lawan was secretly given the INEC form by the APC headquarters to fill for submission, but he didn’t went through party screening and didn’t participate in the senatorial primary election which took place in Gashua town on May 28.

Machina, who was the sole candidate got 289 votes in the primaries, while Lawan in meeting with the APC National Vice Chairman, North East, Mustapha Salihu, is trying to ‘forcefully take over’ the ticket from Mr Machina.

When contacted on the allegations, the APC National Vice Chairman, North East said he never interfered in the local party decisions in Yobe.

“I don’t interfere with local party arrangement in states. Yobe has its own unique way of primaries, which is a general consensus.

“All aspirants who obtained the party’s nomination forms nationwide have filled the withdrawal forms, which is a clear consent to withdraw in case of any superior interest, and with the consent of the party stakeholders in the state.

“I’m aware that it is a national party policy for aspirants who lost the presidential ticket to return to their seats in the Senate. You can see Godswill Akpabio has already reclaimed his senatorial ticket,” Mr Salihu added.

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum, AYCF, on Monday, stated its position on the emergence of Atiku Abubakar and Bola Tinubu as the presidential candidates of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

National President of AYCF, Yerima Shettima, said he would have preferred a youth as the presidential candidate of both parties, he however noted that Nigerians would decide who to pick between Tinubu, Atiku, and other Presidential candidates.

He also noted that AYCF would embark on a consultation to see which candidate would build synergy with the youths ahead of 2023.

Asked if Nigerians need the like of Tinubu or Atiku as president at this point in time when there is a clamour for a youth, Shettima said, “You will always know my position but then Nigerians have to make their decision on if they Atiku or Tinubu is what they want. I don’t believe in bringing the people of old age, I have always believed in the new order believing that we need people with energy but another school of thought will want to justify the thoughts of Nigerians that the elders have a role to play while the youths should support

“We should not be in a hurry to conclude because we have other younger elements that are participating in various platforms.

“Don’t forget that APC and PDP are not the only political parties so I think Nigerians have a choice to decide who they think would serve them better now.

“There are other younger elements we have in the like of Sowore, Peter Obi, Kwankwaso and the rest. I think we have a lot of opportunities to decide and whoever we decide after consultations, we will take out position at the appropriate time.

“We will build capacity and synergy among the younger generation to ensure that we go one way and ensure this country moves forward.

“It has always been my view for a younger generation, with the happens now, we need little time to look in words and see what is likely to come up. Nothing is stable at the moment, we have not seen their running mate and we look forward to seeing those who will identify with the younger generation.”
