Northern Youths Ask Buhari To Back Jonathan For Presidency

0

The Northern Youths Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to support former President Goodluck Jonathan for the presidency in 2023.

Isa Abubakar, NYCN president, said Jonathan has the strength to govern the country.

The former president has not indicated interest to run for the position despite calls from different groups in the country.

Abubakar described Jonathan as a “purposeful leader” who has the experience to take Nigeria to “the promised land”.

President Buhari should consider endorsing Jonathan if he is ready to contest the 2023 election. We are planning to mobilize ourselves to pay him a visit to consider running for the 2023 presidential election,” he said.

Jonathan has the energy and charisma to rule Nigeria.

I think it is a great decision for former President Goodluck Jonathan. He was a purposeful leader for the six years that he ruled the nation.

We believe that he has the experience to move the nation to the next level and the promised land.

He is still very vibrant. While some Nigerians are still agitating for a youthful president, some youths are governors but are not doing enough to ensure that the state they govern enjoys the dividend of democracy in terms of infrastructure and welfare of its workers.

What matters is the experience and the willpower to ensure that Nigerians get the dividend of democracy.”

The NYCN president said there is high voter apathy because a lot of young people are not interested in politics.

Eighty percent of them have refused to vote or participate in politics which has greatly led to voters’ apathy,” he said.

Youth activists must call the youths to order. They must engage in massive sensitization campaigns to ensure that narratives change.”

Colonial Masters Responsible For Nigeria’s Faulty Foundation —Ganduje

0

Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, has attributed the challenges of nation building in Nigeria to the faulty foundation laid by the colonial masters.

The governor made the assertions at the launching of the N250 million Dr Abdullahi Ganduje Lecture Theatre on Saturday at the University of Ibadan.

Ganduje, who was the Guest Speaker, bagged the Most Distinguished Alumni Award.

The governor said that the faulty foundation laid by the colonial masters was purely done to actualise their interests and not for any genuine development of the country.

He said, “The challenges of nation building in Nigeria are attributable to the very faulty foundation laid by the European colonial masters.

These were purely done to actualise their interests and not for any genuine development of the country.”

Ganduje said that the colonial rule divided Nigeria into North and South without much concern for the peculiarities of the two regions.

He said that the division was without concern for the difference in land tenure systems, local government administration, education and judicial systems.

Ganduje said the challenges of nation building should be a matter of concern to all, adding that there was need to reflect on the journey so far to build and leave a better legacy for the future.

From this historical legacy, therefore, regionalism has been a major challenge to nation-building in Nigeria. Under these conditions, it was easy for prejudice and fear to thrive.

Nation-building is about building a common sense of purpose, sense of shared destiny and collective imagination of belonging.

Nation-building is about building the tangible and intangible threads that hold a political entity together and gives it a sense of purpose,” he said.

This is the kind of education that has helped Hamzat, we also need to develop skills that prepare us for selfless leadership through volunteerism, community engagement, and mobilisation for collective causes,” he said.

Maiduguri residents protest rising criminal activities

By Hamza Suleiman

Some residents of Shagari Low-cost Housing in Maiduguri on Saturday staged a peaceful protest against what they described as ‘increase in criminal activities’.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the demonstration followed the killing of one Mr Aga Citi, the Vice-Chairman of Timber Sellers Association, in the state.

The victim was allegedly murdered in cold blood by unknown gunmen in the estate on March 10, at about 8.15 p.m.

The protesters demanded immediate closure of “Kasuwan Fara,” a commercial joint known to be habouring drug peddlers, commercial sex workers and other nefarious activities.

One of the protesters, Mr Felix Samuel, lamented that the rate of crime had triggered fear amongst the residents of the area.

Samuel said that Citi was killed as he parked his car at the commercial area to buy fast food at a joint.

“When you come to Shagari Low-cost in the evening, you will see many prostitutes and youths from different parts of Maiduguri engaging in all sorts of anti-social activities. It is no longer news that people are being attacked on daily basis,” he said.

Malam Kabiru Musa, another resident, who expressed worry over the increasing rate of crime in the area, called for urgent measures to address the menace.

“We are appealing to Gov. Babagana Zulum to come to our aid as we can no longer sleep with our two eyes closed,” said Musa.

“The reality is that day in day out, we are being attacked, we are being killed. Our houses are being robbed.

“The other day, a lady who was intoxicated wiyh psychotropic substances was murdered in a hotel after being raped by unknown individuals.

“Another lady was murdered by another man in one of the hotels here in Shagari Low-cost after picking her for a short time,” he regreted.

He noted that the commercial market, popularly called ‘Kasuwan fara’, was breeding all sorts of criminals which the government must tackle.

On his part, Mr Idris Wada, another protester, said the Borno Government had banned all brothels and other spots activities where prostitution, immoral activities, sale and consumption of illicit drugs take place since 2017, but these activities had continued unabated.

Wada said while notorious brothels in Galadima, Artillery, Gamboru, Wulari, Hot Bite, Baga Road, Mairi and London Ciki were shut down, most of the activities had surfaced in Shagari Low-cost.

“Between last year and this year, residents in this area found seven abandoned babies thrown away by unknown persons,” he said.

Malam Mustapha Isa, another protester, was worried that the recurring criminal activities would result in devastating consequences on the general populace, if allowed to continue unchecked.

He also called on the Borno government, the Police and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to intensify the fight against criminals and drug abuse to protect the society and safeguard the health of the people.

NAN recalls that the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Abdu Umar, had mobilised his men and other patrol teams to the area to investigate the killing of Citi.

While calling for calm, Umar said the police had commenced discreet investigation in order to fish out and prosecute the perpetrators.

The police boss also promised to fish out criminals and those unleashing terror against peaceful citizens in the state.

Umar assured residents that he would deliver their message to the governor to facilitate immediate action over the concerns raised.

He reiterated commitment of the Police force toward protection of lives and properties, urging the people to report any suspicious activity to the nearest security outfit for prompt action.

APC In Crsis Over Position Of Caretaker Chairman

0

Crisis has erupted in the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the position of chairman of the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) – the party’s interim national leadership.

Niger State Governor Abubakar Bello has moved to take over from Yobe State governor Mai Mala Buni as chairman of the CECPC, a position which would make him (Bello) the party’s caretaker national chairman.

Buni has been APC acting national chairman since his emergence in 2020 when the committee was inaugurated, after the removal of former national chairman Adams Oshiomhole.

Speculations that Bello had taken over as interim chairman emerged when he chaired a meeting of the caretaker committee on March 7.

The Niger State governor had pulled up in the parking lot reserved for the chairman when he arrived for the meeting at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

While the meeting was still going on, Bello released pictures which showed him presiding over the session.

The caption on the pictures shared by the governor on the social media read: “I am currently presiding over the Caretaker/Extra-ordinary Convention Planning Committee of the APC at the National Secretariat of the Party.”

Buni was not present for the caretaker committee meeting as he is currently away in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, where he is reportedly receiving medical attention for an undisclosed ailment.

There were unconfirmed reports earlier on March 7 that President Muhammadu Buhari had ordered Buni’s removal as chairman of the APC caretaker committee.

It also said Buhari appointed Bello as Buni’s replacement.

Buhari allegedly took the decision just before traveling to London, where he would be undergoing medical checks for two weeks.

Buni had been under pressure from a faction of APC stakeholders who believe he does not want the party to conduct a national convention before the primaries for the 2023 presidential election.

There were insinuations that the Yobe governor was eyeing the position of vice president on the APC presidential ticket. It is also alleged that he wants to be in office as caretaker chairman when the party holds the primary election for its presidential candidate.

The national convention, where the APC will elect a new national chairman and other members of the National Working Committee (NWC), was postponed from February 26 to March 26 after the party failed to meet up with the schedule of programmes in the timetable.

The development was largely blamed on the Buni-led caretaker committee, which was accused of foot-dragging on the convention.

Less than three weeks to the rescheduled date for the national convention, there are fewer signs on the ground to indicate that the party is ready for the event.

Feelers are that lack of preparations was responsible for Buhari’s alleged decision to replace Buni with Bello.

The APC has not issued any official statement on the fresh development as at the time of filing this report.

The CECPC meeting being presided by Niger governor Bello was still ongoing as at press time.

Caretaker committee said no change in leadership

Bello’s assumption of the role of caretaker chairman contradicted a statement issued by National Publicity Secretary of the CECPC John James Akpanudoedehe, earlier on March 7.

Akpanudoedehe, APC acting spokesman, had, in the statement, declared that there was no change in the leadership of the caretaker committee.

The statement was a reaction to reports that Buni had been removed as caretaker chairman.

The CECPC spokesman said the reports, which he described as fake, were sponsored.

The statement read, “Our attention has been drawn to sponsored media reports on an imaginary leadership change in the APC-CECPC. The media report is fake news and should be disregarded.

“The APC is a progressive political party guided by rules. Leadership changes are not announced by ‘sources’ through name dropping in the media.

We urge our teeming supporters, members and indeed the general public to remain calm and support the Governor Mai Mala Buni-led APC CECPC conduct a rancour-free and credible National Convention deserving of our great party.”

The fresh crisis over the position of APC caretaker chairman is the latest episode in the leadership crises that have been rocking Nigeria’s ruling party in the build-up to the 2023 general elections.

It is believed that Buni’s position as Yobe State governor and equally caretaker party national chairman was at the heart of the leadership crisis, which had resulted in several lawsuits filed by aggrieved members who wanted the CECPC disbanded.

The crisis had ensued after the Supreme Court faulted Buni’s dual role as state governor and caretaker chairman of a political party.

Court Orders Umahi, Deputy Not To Vacate Office

0

Governor David Umahi and his Deputy, Kelechi Igwe have secured an interim order from the Ebonyi State High Court, ordering them not to vacate their offices.

This followed an ex-parte motion by counsel to the duo, Roy Umahi brought pursuant to rule 3(3) of the High Court rules of Ebonyi state in suit no HAB/13/22.

The Court had on February 28, 2022, ruled that Governor Umahi and his Deputy did not flout any law by defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to the All Progressive Congress, APC.

The Court presided by Justice Henry Njoku had dismissed the matter for lacking in merit and fined the plaintiff, Sunny Ogbuoji, who was the APC candidate and runner up in the 2019 governorship election N500, 000.

However, an Abuja Federal High Court on 8th March ruling on a similar matter filed by the PDP ordered the Governor and his Deputy to vacate their seats.

The presiding Judge, Justice Inyang Ekwo further ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) to accept new nominations for the two positions from the PDP and to issue them with certificates of return for them to be sworn in as Governor and Deputy.

Umahi and his Deputy rejected the Abuja ruling arguing that the Ebonyi High Court ruling should take precedence.

To this effect, Messrs Umahi and Igwe approached the same Ebonyi High Court yesterday, praying the court to declare that its judgement of the 28th February 2022 on their defection to APC remains valid as a judgement in rem and as such should have precedence over any other contrary judgement and should be binding on all parties, persons and authorities.

In his ruling, Justice Henry Njoku granted the prayers sought by the duo and adjourned the matter to March 16 for a hearing on the motion on notice.

He declared: “it is hereby ordered as follows, an interim order of this honourable court for seven days(subject to renewal) is hereby granted in view of the judgement in suit no. HAB/13/22 delivered on the 28th day of February 2022, being a judgement in rem and having precedence over any contrary judgement.

The applicants hereto Engr David Nweze Umahi and Dr Eric Kelechi Igwe shall accordingly remain and not be removed from office as governor and deputy governor of Ebonyi state respectively”

Meanwhile, the Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Francis Nwifuru and 14 other lawmakers were sacked by the Court for defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday said they were dissatisfied with the judgement.

Justice Inyang Ekwo of Federal High Court, Abuja, had on Tuesday in his ruling, declared vacant the seats of Speaker Nwifuru and 14 other lawmakers.

The Judge ordered INEC to conduct a bye-election to fill in the vacant seats, in the respective constituencies within 90 days.

But Mr Nwifuru who briefed Journalists alongside the other 14 lawmakers at the in Abakaliki disclosed that they had filed an appeal and stay of execution, with respect to the judgement

Nwifuru, however, said they would obey the judgement.

It is about two days ago we started hearing the rumour that a federal high court in Abuja declared our seats vacant on the ground that we defected from PDP to APC.

I know the position of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria, but I am not in a position to know how the judiciary interprets the law. I am not against that.

We have filed an appeal and a stay of execution. Since the matter is in the court of law, there is no need to say anything about it. Our position is that the law will take its position. We are begging our constituents to remain law-abiding”,he said.

While many in the government circle are optimistic that the present judicial turbulence would end gloriously for the Governor and his Deputy, other political analysts are of the view that the present development might present a new judicial precedent.

Femi Adesina Says Nigerians Not Encouraging Buhari

0

Special Adviser to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has said ‘some people’ are not encouraging the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) in his efforts to secure Nigeria, revive the economy, and fight insecurity.

The President’s spokesperson also accused the Nigerian media of paying less attention to the achievements of Buhari, particularly those bordering on wins against insecurity.

Adesina made the allegations in an article titled, ‘The story that didn’t hug the headlines’, and shared on his official Facebook page on Thursday.

He noted that rather than showcase Buhari’s achievements on same topic, his traducers prefer to critise him openly and look away when he deserves some credits.

Making reference to the Global Terrorism Index 2022 report released last week by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) where Nigeria recorded the second-biggest reduction in deaths in Sub-Saharan Africa, Adesina noted that both the Nigerian media and Buhari’s critic failed to give the achievements deserving coverage and mention respectively.

It is something that should hug the headlines, dominate the talk shows, go viral on social media, and be of interest to social commentators. But not a murmur, nor a whisper, as I said earlier.

As if in a conspiracy of silence, nobody talked about the report. The media didn’t report it, and those that did, superciliously tucked it away in a place where you would need to put on the torchlight before you would see it,” he said.

He added, “Now, just imagine that the same report had indicated that there was a spike in Boko Haram killings in Nigeria, with the carnage exceeding that of the previous year by 100 per cent. All hell would have broken loose. It would be lead headline in most publications.

Some television stations would scroll the story in their news bar round the clock, for many days. It would be the topic of discussion on morning and evening discussion programs. We would be almost deafened by the cacophony. So-called security experts and social activists would be invited, and they would be pontificating all day.”

Continuing, he wrote, “President Muhammadu Buhari came our way in 2015, promising to secure the country, revive the economy, and fight corruption.

“Rather than encourage him, what some people had been engaged in is sticking a pin into the soft underbelly of the various wars. No plaudits. No bravo. No encouragement. He didn’t do this, he didn’t do that, is all they are interested in.

The economy recorded 3.4% growth last year, the best since 2014, no murmur, no whisper. The anti-corruption war has seen convictions in thousands between 2015 and now, yet, what interests some people is how the war is allegedly selective, even without a scintilla of evidence.
“And when there are strides in the battle against insecurity, their narrative remains the same. Oh, life is nasty, brutish, and short here.

Adesina noted that despite gains being recorded in some critical sectors, “the pessimists have not changed their tongues, nor their minds”.
When you exhibit loud silence about positive developments in your country, and scream blue murder when there are reversals, you are a hypocrite, a hater of your country, and a hater of all that is good. Sad, dolorous, mournful,” he wrote.

Three goals and three points for Blues

It took the Blues just three minutes to take the lead when Trevoh Chalobah nodded the ball into the net from Mason Mount’s corner kick.

Norwich put up barely any effort to hold Chelsea and just 10 minutes later it was 2-0 as Mount himself got himself on the scoresheet after Kai Havertz passed it to him across the penalty area.

Norwich threaten the European champions, and their pressure paid off through the penalty spot after Chalobah handled the ball inside his own area which sees Teemu Pukki concert his effort from the spot kick.
