The Bauchi State Government has pledged to marry off at least 100 repentant commercial sex workers who indicated interest and presented themselves to the state’s Hisbah Department.

Alhaji Aminu Balarabe-Isah, the Permanent Secretary in charge of the department, made this known on Tuesday at the formal inauguration of vocational training for 575 repentant commercial sex workers in Bauchi.

He said the government would sponsor the weddings of both Muslim and Christian women among them, and provide them with dependable and reliable sources of livelihood.
We would facilitate the entire process after obtaining their consent and that of their parents and guardians before the marriage takes place,” he added.

He congratulated them for taking the bold decision to renounce the practice, which may affect their lives negatively and place a permanent stigma on them.

The permanent secretary explained that the repentant sex workers would be trained on vocational skills which included hairdressing, knitting, entrepreneurship, tailoring and cosmetology.

He said other skills were makeup, catering, poultry/fishery, shoe/bag making, and computer literacy classes, adding that the training was in collaboration with the National Directorate of Employment.
We would expand the scope of the training to the 20 existing local government areas of the state,” he said.

According to him, the day for the mass wedding will be announced after completing all necessary preparations and after ensuring that due processes are adhered to for the exercise.

A trainee, receiving training in tailoring, Maryam David, described the gesture as a welcome development and assured that she would never return to her previous lifestyle again.

She said she would use the knowledge acquired to establish her own business and eventually remarry to turn to a better life.
Similarly, Hadiza Mohammed commended the Gov. Bala Mohammed-led administration for initiating the programme, saying, “I am learning a vocation in hairdressing and I am happy for the opportunity.

“I will soon establish my own business to achieve self-sustainability, as my former way of life is regrettable and full of unnecessary risks,” she said.

Bandits Kill 63 In Kebbi

63 local vigilante group members were reportedly trapped and killed in an ambush by bandits operating in Kebbi State, northwest Nigeria.

The group popularity called ‘Yan sa kai’ in Hausa language, meaning volunteers were said to have been drawn from communities seeking to end the activities of bandits in the state.

The tragic incident occurred after the local guards launched an ambush against the bandits in Zuru Emirate of Kebbi State.

The bandits during the gun duel retreated into the bush in a tactical move allowing the vigilante to fall into their ambush.

Unfortunately for the vigilante, they thought they were winning not knowing that it was a strategic move to ambush them and before they could realise, they were already in the middle of the fight and surrounded by heavy firepower.

Also, a government official in Kebbi said they have received reports of the attack but are yet to have details of what really happened and the number of casualties said to have been recorded in the aftermath.

“Bandits attack is also mostly a daily occurrence. We pray that we see to the end of this evil. We shall communicate appropriately when we have details of the reports from Zuru” he said.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Nafi’u Abubakar could not be reached for comments. However, a senior officer in Kebbi said they were waiting to receive reports of incidents around the area of operations.

Court Sacks Ebonyi Governor, Umahi And His Deputy Over Defection To APC

0

A Federal High Court in Abuja has sacked Ebonyi State Governor, Mr Dave Umahi, and his Deputy, Dr Kelechi Igwe, on account of their unlawful defection from the Peoples Democratic Party PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The court declared their defection unlawful, unconstitutional, null and void and ordered them to immediately vacate their offices.

The judge had earlier today sacked Governor David Umahi and his Deputy, Dr Eric Kelechi Igwe for defecting to APC.

He held that the total number of 393, 042 votes governor Umahi secured during the March 9, 2019 governorship election in Ebonyi state, belonged to the PDP and same could not be legally transferred to the APC.

Ekwo ruled that having defected to the APC, both Umahi and his deputy, not only jettisoned the PDP, but also the votes that belonged to it.

He held that going by the outcome of the governorship election, the office of the governor and deputy governor in Ebonyi state, “belong to the Plaintiff and no other political party”.

Justice Ekwo said: “There is no constitutional provision that made the ballot transferrable from one party to the other”.

In the same vain, the Federal High Court, Abuja, ordered 16 lawmakers from Ebonyi to vacate their seats after their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Justice Inyang Ekwo, in a judgment, ordered the lawmakers to stop parading themselves as representatives of the people after dumping the party on which platform they were elected into the house of assembly.

Why Yahaya Bello Should Be President In 2023 —Kogi SSG Arike

0

The Secretary to the Kogi State Government (SSG), Dr. Folashade Arike, said Gov. Yahaya Bello’s capacity, dedication, sincerity, and compassion make him the right choice for President in 2023.

She said Bello had carved a niche for himself and recorded successes across all sectors, adding that his commitment and passion for development is one that Nigerians are yearning for.

Arike said that Bello’s style of leadership has also brought unity, peace, and security to Kogi and its people, which is what Nigeria needs more at this time.

Empathy, compassion, dedication, truthfulness, sincerity, capacity to deliver on his mandate, commitment to the cause of Kogi State and Nigeria at large are the qualities of His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello.

Hardly can you find a leader that has so much passion for development as the Governor does.

Alhaji Yahaya Bello is the man that has carved a niche for himself because of the way he has piloted the affairs of the state since assumption of office.

The Governor has helped the state get better and the best thing we can do as Nigerians is to give him the support he needs to succeed and make Nigeria great.

The qualities I highlighted above do not include the fact that he is the youngest man to have ever held the position. That is also something we should ponder about.

He was a public servant as a federal civil servant and when he decided to run for office, he came straight to say he was interested in being the Governor, and the almighty God installed him divinely.

He did not come and say he wanted to be the Chairman of his LGA or the state Assembly member, but a governor. That is to tell you he is a goal-getter.

To tell you how great he is, he did not only make history in the state but also in law. The legal documents of this country are no longer the same, partly, because of him,” she said.

According to her, the governor’s investment in infrastructure has changed the landscape of the state, turning places that were hitherto overlooked into areas deserving attention.

The SSG added that the comprehensive and all-encompassing reform of the civil services has been successfully implemented, in addition to other sectors.

“He has shown doggedness and determination to improve the health, education, road networks, agriculture and other aspects of people’s lives.”

Don’t Tamper With Electoral Act, Court Tells Buhari And Others

0

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has stopped President Muhammad Buhari, Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Senate president from tampering with the newly amended Electoral Act 2022.

Justice Inyang Ekwo gave the restraining order while ruling on ex-parte application filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He agreed with the plaintiff’s counsel, James Onoja (SAN) with Moses Ebute (SAN) that the Electoral Act has become a valid Law and cannot be tampered with without following due process of law. He further agreed with PDP’s counsel, Onoja SAN, that the proper place to challenge validity of any existing law is court of competent jurisdiction.

Specifically, the court restrained all the defendants in the suit from removing section 84 (12) of the Electoral Act or prevent It from being implemented for the purpose of the 2023 general elections.

The PDP had dragged President Muhammadu Buhari before the court challenging fresh move to tamper with the newly amended Electoral Act signed into law some days ago.

Buhari was sued along with the AGF and Minister of Justice, Senate President, Speaker, House of Representatives, Clerk of National Assembly, Senate Leader, House of Representatives Leader and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Also joined as defendants in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/247/2022 are deputy Senate president, deputy speaker, House of Representatives, deputy Senate leader and deputy House of Representatives leader.

The PDP had prayed the Federal High Court for an order of interim injunction restraining Buhari and other defendants from refusing to implement the duly signed Electoral Act or in any manner witholding the Electoral Act from being put to use including the provisions of section 84 (12) of the said Act pending the resolution of the suit.

PDP also applied for an order of the court stopping the National Assembly from giving effect to President Buhari’s request to remove section 84 (12) from the Electoral Act or take any step that will make the provision inoperative pending the resolution of the motion on notice for interlocutory injunction.

The grouse of the PDP is that President Buhari having assented to the Bill on February 25 cannot give any directive to the National Assembly to take immediate steps to remove the section 84 (12) or any section of the Act on any ground whatsoever.

The court further issued an order of interim injunction restraining the other defendants, except the president and the AGF “from implementing or in manner whatsoever, giving effect to the directive of the first defendant/respondent to delete or remove the provisions of Section 84(12) of the Electoral Act 2022 on the ground that it is unconstitutional or at all or in any manner taking any step at the behest of the first defendant/respondent or at all to render Section 84 of the Electoral Act 2022 inoperative pending the determination of the motion on Notice for interlocutory injunction filed in this suit.

It further argued that the duty to interpret any law is exclusively reserved for the judiciary not the Executive including the president.
