Why Nigeria Remains Undeveloped —Gowon

0

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Retd), has revealed one of the reasons Nigeria is still underdeveloped.
The retired military boss regretted that successive governments have failed to continue with the National Development Plan of 1975–1980.

General Yakubu Gowon spoke at the public presentation of a book entitled: “General Domkat Yah Bali (GCON) As Ponzhi Tarok Designate, a Contextual Analysis of The Imbroglio.”

The book, presented by a 2023 presidential aspirant, Prince Adewole Adebayo at the Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, was co-wrtten by the wife of Domkat Yah Bali, Esther Bali.

Gowon lamented that successive governments have failed to adhere to the beautiful work of the dedicated Nigerian military officers such as Bali which has denied the country the benefits of coordinated development for a great nation.

The former military head of state insisted that the country would have been a leading light to other nations in terms of development had leaders maintained the prescription of the development plan and stuck to it.

“If only the development plan that we had at that time, 1975 – 1980. If it had continued, if they had carried it through, it would have made all the difference,” he said.

Gowon attributed all the major breakthroughs he had during his administration as the military head of state to General Domkat Yah Bali.

All these achievements, we can say, I really owe it to General Bali and all those young officers in those days though, young as they were, they shouldered those responsibilities far, far above their age and experience.”

Presenter of the Book and Presidential aspirant, Prince Adewole Adebayo, said the book dwelt on the principles of truth and justice.

His words: “My job, which is to present this book to the public, but just note that the book we are presenting is not just the print and the paper, it is the principle behind the book that we are presenting. It is not a rock story.

It’s the human story, about the need for society to have honor and integrity. Sacrifice of personal interest for the good of the wider society,” he said.

Evacuation of Nigerians From Ukraine Begins Wednesday

0

The Federal Government of Nigeria has concluded plans to evacuate stranded Nigerians from Ukraine from Wednesday.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama stated this during an appearance before the leadership of the House of Representatives.

The Minister, who spoke at a meeting with Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, said the first batch of the air-lift of Nigerians is scheduled to take place on Wednesday.

The Speaker said the House would give every needed support to the Ministry to ensure successful evacuation of Nigerians back from Ukraine.

Gbajabiamila restated the position of the legislature when he invited the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Godfrey Onyeama, to his office in Abuja on Monday for a meeting on the plight of Nigerians caught in the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Onyeama said the evacuation earlier planned for Monday was rescheduled for Wednesday to give enough room for the ministry, the House and the Nigerian foreign missions in Ukraine, Poland and Russia to complete the formalities of moving Nigerians from inside Ukraine to safe borders with neighbouring countries.

The Minister reassured the Speaker things were under control in Ukraine as the Federal Government had put necessary arrangement in place to ensure the safe return of Nigerians.

He said further that in the last few days, the ministry in conjunction with the missions had completed formalities for Nigerians to move to safe border points from where they would be transported in buses to the airports in neighbouring countries.

He listed Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary and even Russia, among the countries to be used as exit points.

The Minister disclosed that there were about 5,600 Nigerian students in Ukraine, added that there were also non-students, some of whom might not have been legally documented.

He informed the Speaker that working closely with the governments of those countries, the ministry had secured their cooperation to grant access to Nigerians into their territories, preparatory for the evaluation.

He however dismissed reports that Africans, particularly Nigerians, were not allowed to leave Ukraine or granted access into the neighbouring countries, blaming the chaos at some of the borders on “panic” and the fact that so many people were rushing at the time on hearing the sound of bombs and artillery fire.

“We must always be seen to be working together as leaders from across, not the divides and divisions, but across humanity. It is important for us to make all these public appearances together in view of what is going on in our country.

“The divisions and suspicions in our country is getting deeper and deeper by the day. So, leaders must be seen to be working together, not only block those gaps and divisions but to reassure the people of this country;

“And, in this case, the people of Sokoto state, that we are all one and we are working together for the peace and common good of all humanity. That is key and important,” Tambuwal was quoted as saying in a statement by his media aide, Muhammad Bello.

He also expressed appreciation to the Diocese for its gesture in opening up the Bakhita facility to the state government during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic when the state was running short of care centers back then.

“It was a very brave move because people were running away even from their families afflicted by COVID. Bishop called me and said we have this facility. If you are in shortage of where to take patients to, please we avail you of this,” he recalled Bishop Kukah telling him.

SERAP Asks Buhari, African Leaders To Sanction Russia

0

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari and other African leaders to sanction Russia.
Many countries, including the US and its allies had condemned the invasion of Ukraine by Russian military forces and imposed sanctions on Russia.

The United States, European Union, Canada and the United Kingdom have agreed to block “selected” Russian banks from the SWIFT global financial network and impose “restrictive measures” on its central bank in retaliation for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Nation reports civilian and military airports in Ukraine have been bombed by Russia which sought to destroy Ukraine’s air capabilities.

All flights in and out of Ukraine were cancelled.

Meanwhile, Nigerians and other African are entering Poland and other neighbouring nations for safety.

Reacting, SERAP urged Buhari to provide leadership by calling for extra-ordinary sessions of the African Union and ECOWAS.
The organisation said: “We urge President Buhari to provide the leadership by immediately calling for extra-ordinary sessions of the African Union and ECOWAS to discuss sanctions against Russia over the invasion of Ukraine, and to call for protection of Africans caught up in the conflict.”

Government Not Showing Seriousness To Negotiate, Says ASUU

0

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has accused the federal government of showing levity in its ongoing negotiation with the union whose members are currently on a four-week strike.

The union therefore said ending the industrial action is dependent on the readiness of the government to take the issue at stake seriously and do the needful.

National President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said the last meeting between the two sides could not achieve anything because the government team acted as if it did not know the issues at stake.

“Our last meeting did not lead to anything meaningful because the government team acted as if they were not aware of the issues at stake. We have been on this thing for some years now. What we expected from them is to come to the meeting with answers to what we are demanding.

“We were surprised that their team came with no action as to how to resolve the issues. Another meeting is slated for Tuesday and we hope they would change and do the needful. What we are asking for has been in public domain for long that almost everybody knows what the issues are. It is surprising that they did not come with any action plan to.meet our demands and resolve the issues,” he said.

Asked whether the next meeting would be used to resolve the faceoff, Osodeke said government’s action and readiness would determine that.

He added that the demands of the union were still the same regarding revitalising university education, discontinuance of Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System, IPPIS, as the payment system in the universities, payment of promotion and salary arrears among others.

Findings by our correspondent, however, showed that the two major areas of disagreement is the IPPIS that the lecturers want to be replaced with the University Transparency and Accountability System, UTAS and adequate funding of the sector. Government is reluctant to do away with IPPIS because it feels it helps to eliminate the situation whereby some lecturers are on the payroll of more than one university.

On the call for more money to be pumped into the sector, the government is claiming that it is currently having paucity of funds, a claim the union said can be tackled by the government setting its priority right.

If the two sides fail to resolve their faceoff by March 13, this year, the union may go on an indefinite strike.
