It is not a breaking news that our education system is in dire need of marshal policy and magic wand, that is why the YBSG initiated the global practice of raising funds in order to compliment the government effort.

Today history has been made, and every proponent of Quality Education will be impressed with the level of commitment recorded, despite the fact some donation are symbolic but we all believe we are in the right track to gives children an opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge to improve their lives in order to build a promising future for themselves and their families.

While jubilating and praising the policy, remember it comes with enormous challenges and tremendous opportunities which citizens has to play a participatory role for proper utilization of the funds raise.

If there is any time to hold government accountable, this is the rightful time, a certain percentage of the money raise is your hard earned, you donated it for the firm belief that a better tomorrow for your children is possible.

Now the data and information is available, used such opportunity to hold your government accountable, leverage on FOI Act to inquire about government spending in the education sector because without transparency and accountability, the history made today will be recorded and Karl Marx once said “History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce.”

As for the Executive Governor of Yobe State, thank you for leveraging on your network, a cause which you have done it for the betterment of Yobe, and the ball is now rolling on the corridor of the government and the State’s Education Trust Fund (YETFUND) who are tasked with the mandate to manage the funds, we expect a magic wand for the revitalization of the dying education sector.

What many don’t know about university lecturers in Nigeria.

0

An Assistant Lecturer with a take home N120 000 naira monthly would have to pay his PhD school fees, pay to accomplish his PhD studies, settle his family, pay to attend conference, pay to take care of his health and that of his family, pay to publish journal articles and book chapters and pay to conduct researches.

All with his slavish salary. Many don’t even know that in our condition of service as Nigerian academics, research comes before teaching.

Many don’t know that the minimum you pay to publish in a Nigerian journal is N30 000, that’s minus the amount you spend to conduct the actual research.

Many don’t know that for a lecturer in Nigeria to move from one level to another, he has to spend huge percentage of his slavish salary to conduct researches and also spend another huge percentage of same salary to publish the research outcome.

Many don’t know that in all Nigerian civil service, university lecturers are the only ones that plough back their meager salary into doing what they were paid the salary for…

Many don’t know that for a lecturer in Nigeria to be a Senior lecturer with a salary of below N250 000 monthly, he must have a PhD and many journal articles, conference papers, book chapters, etc…

Many don’t know that by the time a university lecturer in Nigeria becomes a senior lecturer, he must have spent half of all the salary he he has earned back into his salary earning job.

Many don’t know that teaching isn’t part of the yardstick of promoting Nigerian lecturers, research and publishing the research are the parameters used in promoting Nigerian academics.

Many don’t know that successive Nigerian governments, this government inclusive, have refused to review lecturers’ salary since 2009.

Despite the fact that the salaries ought to have been upwardly reviewed since 2015 at most. Many don’t know that the salary of a professor in Nigerian university is below N350 000 naira a month. That’s a person with a degree, a master’s degree and a terminal PhD, whom has published widely and globally, whom has produced many PhDs, M. Scs and degree holders and must have generated humongous human capital for Nigeria.

Many don’t know that the salary of a professor in Nigerian universities is below that of a first degree holder in many governmental institutions in same Nigeria.

Indeed, many don’t know that even if lecturers don’t teach, they have to conduct and publish the outcome of their research. Many don’t know that Nigerian lecturers are currently overburdened by insanely above capacity lecturer students ratio with no commissural benefits.

Many don’t know that in almost all the struggle that university lecturers suffer, they suffer for the sustainance of the university system in Nigeria. Many don’t know that Nigerian governments are ready to pay lecturers huge salary but at the expense of the students. Yes, the government is ever ready to geometrically increase lecturers’ salary but students must pay tuition fees. Many don’t know that, that’s the core reason why ASUU members have to endure slavish salary for more than a decade.

Now, we should know.

ASUU members, particularly young academics are no more ready to continue living a life of abject penury because of the utopia of some ideals. Now, we should know that ASUU’s energy should be dispensed more on the welfare of its members. The number one welfare of members of ASUU should be about having a living salary. A situation where a professor earns less than a first degree holder in same system is not tenable.

My noble union, ASUU, currently enmeshed in its NEC-for-NEC meeting should know that execution of the renegotiated and wilfully signed stance is the only panacea of stoping this total, comprehensive and encompassing strike.

How Former DCP Abba Kyari Got Trap in Drug Deal Negotiations

0

Yesterday, Maidawaarewa report that, The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has made a video proof public against the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari.

NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, narrated: ‘the saga started on Friday, January 21, 2022, when DCP Kyari initiated a call to one of the NDLEA officers in Abuja at 2:12 pm. When the officer returned the call two minutes later, Mr Kyari informed him he was coming to see him, to discuss an operational matter after Juma’at service.

‘He appeared at the agreed venue of the meeting with the officer and went straight to the crux of the matter.

‘This was it: His team had intercepted and arrested some traffickers that came into the country from Ethiopia with, according to him, 25kg of cocaine.

‘He proposed a drug deal whereby he and his team are to take 15kg of the cocaine and leave 10kg for the prosecution of the suspects arrested with the illicit drug in Enugu. In the meantime, the purloined cocaine will be replaced with a dummy worth 15kg. He asked the NDLEA officer to persuade men of the FCT Command to play along as well.

‘By 11: 05 am on Monday, January 24, after the Agency gave the officer the green light to play along, he and Kyari began a WhatsApp call for the rest of the day. The officer conveyed “their” willingness to play the game.

‘At this point, Kyari disclosed that the 15kg (already taken out) was shared between the informants that provided information for the seizure and he and his men of the IRT of the Nigerian Police.

‘He then offered to pay the NDLEA team (that is the officer and the FCT commander) by selling, on their behalf, half of the remaining 10kg, thereby further reducing the original cocaine for the prosecution to just 5kg. At N7m per kilogram, the proceeds from the 5kg would amount to N35m, at the exchange rate of N570 per dollar being the black-market rate for the day, January 24, 2022. In effect, he would be delivering $61, 400 to the NDLEA team.

‘He put pressure on our officer to wrap up the arrangement with the commander of the FCT Command to take custody of the drug and suspects from his men who were on ground in Abuja. At the time, he was speaking from Lagos, where he allegedly travelled for private business.

‘In their discussion, he disclosed how his team received the information from a double-crosser who betrayed the traffickers to him, showing a sordid connection between law enforcement agents and the drug underworld; he narrated how acting on the tip-off, his team departed Abuja to Enugu and arrested the traffickers, removed part of the consignment on his instruction and replaced same with dummies.

‘He also indicated how to identify the remnant of the original cocaine that would be delivered to NDLEA, five original packages marked with red dots. The reason for this was to avoid the dummies being subjected to test. He forwarded a picture of the marked original cocaine package.

‘According to the plan, once the 5kg cocaine has been tested in the presence of the suspects and confirmed positive, there would be no need to test the remaining ones, being dummies.

‘He also brought with him the money from the sale of the 5kg share of the NDLEA team, a total of $61, 400. Our officer, however, preferred to take the money inside his car. Well, the car was wired with sound and video recorders. And the moment was documented, part of which I will play for you at the end of this briefing.

‘So, we have a trove of intelligence, hard facts, from chats to photos and video and a detailed transcript of the communication between him and the NDLEA officer.

‘This is not the place to delve into the details. But it is disheartening to hear straight from the horse’s mouth the kind of sleaze engaged in by this team of rogue law enforcement agents led by Kyari, the members of whom he described this way: ‘the boys are very, very sharp, they are very loyal,’ he added.

He said: ‘It is disheartening to hear him say of this rogue team, and I quote: “I do take good care of them, and this kind of work is done by only that team.

‘It is equally disheartening to hear him give details of another similar operation which they pulled off, three weeks ago, according to him.’

This is coming months after Mr. Kyari was suspended as the head of the IRT following his alleged involvement in an internet fraud case under a court in the United States of America.

Meanwhile, the fraud case is also being investigated by the Nigerian Police Force.
