Ekambi brace secures victory for Hosts

0

It was quite an entertaining first half in Moulala as Cameroon take on Gambia in the quarterfinals of the AFCON.

The host look to be the favorite to advance into the semifinals with tactical performance in the first 45 minutes, but both side fail to find the back of the net.

The Gambia fairytale was cut short when Toko Ekambi heads home his fourth goal of the competition just a minutes into the second half of the game.

The Lyon forward soon double the Indomitable Lions lead as he fire in from close range after Moumi Ngamaleu fine work from the touch line.

The goal see Ekambi move up to five goals for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, just one short of his country man Vincent Aboubakar who had score six goals.

Cameroon will now wait for the winner between Morocco and Egypt as they clinch a victory into the Semifinals.

Sylva: Buhari’s Choice for President in 2023

0

By Farooq Kperogi

It has turned out that it was actually Buhari himself, not the Aso Rock cabal, who wanted Goodluck Jonathan to succeed him in 2023! Apparently, even members of the cabal were disquieted by this.

The cabal played along for a while (knowing Buhari’s well-known cognitive impairments and imperviousness to reason) and, at the right time, reminded him that in June 2018 he’d signed into law a “Constitution Alteration Bill Number 16” that makes it unconstitutional for vice presidents and deputy governors who complete the first terms of deceased or impeached and removed presidents and governors to run for election twice.

That law basically makes it illegal for Jonathan to seek another term as president. In fact, it was inspired by his 2015 presidential run after completing Umar Musa Yar’adua’s first term AND running and winning a second term in 2011.

After realizing that Jonathan can’t legally run for another presidential election, Buhari told the Aso Rock cabal that he wants former Bayelsa State governor and current minister of state for petroleum Timipre Sylva to succeed him. That’s still his preference.

It doesn’t seem to me that the cabal is enthused by this. But we will see. Sylva has credible allegations of multi-billion-naira corruption hanging around his neck. In 2013, the EFCC seized 48 houses he corruptly acquired, which it returned to him in 2016, months after he defected to the APC.

I don’t know what bond binds Buhari and Sylva. I’ll leave that for journalistic sleuthhounds to unravel. Recall that he was the chairman of Buhari’s inauguration committee in 2015.

The position of minister of state for petroleum is probably the most consequential position in this regime after the office of the president. Buhari family members work with Sylva. One Nuhu Dauda (who is Buhari’s nephew since his father is Buhari’s half-brother) works as an assistant to Sylva.

Even if Buhari doesn’t have his way to get Sylva to succeed him, he is clear that he wants neither Tinubu nor Osinbajo as his successors. Whether that insistence will have any consequences for the electoral fortunes of Tinubu and Osinbajo in the APC primaries is anybody’s guess.

But you have to wonder why Buhari who likes to tout his “integrity” is always drawn to corrupt and shady people.

Dušan Vlahović deal done. Arsenal and Newcastle race to sign Osimhen

Arsenal and Newcastle have turned their attention to Napoli and Nigerian star striker Victor Osimhen as both English teams target a strike this month.

Both clubs are hoping to boost their attacking forces during the January transfer window as Arsenal had made no secret to their interest in signing Fiorentina ace Dusan Vlahovic.

But according to Fabrizio Romano, Vlahovic will undergo a medical with Juventus before signing a long-term contract with Massimiliano Allegri’s side.

Romano tweeted: “Dusan Vlahovic to Juventus, done deal and here we go! Total agreement with player, agents and Fiorentina. €75m fee add ons included. €7m net salary per season”

Vlahovic will undergo medical tests in Turin and sign his long-term contract soon. Deal completed.”

Adama Traore arrives at Spain for medical ahead of Barcelona move

Adama Traore is undergoing a medical at Barcelona before finalising a loan transfer from Wolves.

While turning down Tottenham’s approach, the Wolves winger became a surprise target for Barcelona, his former team and an immediated deal was formulated.

The LaLiga giants hold a purchase option worth around £30million should he provide an impressive performance at the Camp Nou in the second half of the campaign.

Despite facing a financial crisis, the Blaugrana have made a smooth transfer in the January window bringing in Ferran Torres with Dani Alves registering after a November return to the club. Erling Haaland is rumoured to be a genuine target in the summer for Barcelona.

On Buni’s 100 Computer Donation To BUK

0

The Yobe State Governor’s donation of 100 computers to Bayero University Kano (BUK) is politically uncalled for, considering the poor institutional standards of his state, where millions of indigenous students that voted for the governor are battling a lack of various technologies in their state-owned institutions. The donations to a well-furnished and developed Bayero University Kano could never yield a sound result for the governor and the entire students of Yobe State.

However, while this may appear to be good news for Bayero University, it must be tempered by a thorough examination of Yobe State institutional standards and their pressing administrative, social, and academic considerations to resurrect active education in Yobe State higher education institutions.

Yobe State University is among the recently initiated universities in Nigeria and is currently experiencing low student enrollment. Their sources are weak due to a lack of advanced facilities for carrying out academic activities and insufficiently advanced technology to properly train their thousands of students. Meanwhile, Bayero University Kano (BUK) is one of the top-ranked and accredited universities by the federal government of Nigeria.

The university spends years running enough budgets and acquiring modern techniques with a large student enrollment every year. The university’s library is well advanced, and the federal government continues to meet its demand for achieving standard academic excellence in the country.

Bayero University Kano does not require computers to function because they have enough to run any programs and maintain reserves in other ways. There is something to ask the Yobe state governor.

Did he ever visit the Yobe State University library and witness how old it looks? Not just the library, the whole Yobe State University building is demanding a proper renovation from the lecture rooms to the library, rebuilding theater halls, roads, distributing solar-powered electricity and panels, sport coats, purchasing modern books for the library to enhance the students’ research, and other practical equipment for the medical and environmental science students to proficiently acquire knowledge inside the state university.

Besides the urgent calls for the governor’s attention on the rehabilitation of Yobe State University, there are similar institutions around the local government areas of Yobe that almost collapsed in infrastructure, while others have been struggling with academic materials for over decades without any state intervention.

An instance of such institutions is the College of Administration and Management Technology (CAMTECH), Potiskum, and the College of Health and Technology, Nguru, alongside others with poor infrastructure. Those institutions spent years under the state government, but neither the governor nor the ministry of education attended to them for regular check-ups to monitor what changed those institutional needs to keep existing.

Conclusively, it is not a bad idea to donate computers to other universities or limit the governor’s desire on where or who to donate something to; rather, it is a call of attention to share with the governor that institutions under his places of political primary responsibilities are structurally and academically collapsing to a great extent, and the key factor to saving them lies in the hand of Governor Mai Mala Buni.

Barcelona’s financial crisis took them to a state of desperation, leading the club to take certain unthinkable decisions. From the departure of Lionel Messi to the pitiable state in the transfer market, the club has seen its lowest.

The Blauguran President,Joan Laporta’s board aim to resolve the crisis at hand, and one of the most promising options is to attract a massive sponsorship deal for the coming season.

Barcelona’s current deal with Rakuten expires this summer, and no sponsor has been finalized for the coming season. The club has received bids from interested parties for a few months now.

According to reports from SPORT, Barcelona have received the biggest sponsorship offer in the history of football. The proposal will see the club garner €80 million annually. Though the deal has not been finalized.

In recent days, a few names came up in media rounds as possible sponsors for the coming season. Global music streaming giants Spotify lead the list as the most favourite option.

However, the Spanish club has also received offers from cryptocurrency firm Polkadot and Tencent gaming amongst others.

The former seemed to make a strong case to become the sponsor, but the relative volatility of the cryptocurrency market led the board to hesitate.

The injection of such a large sponsorship fee would help Barcelona recoup their financial problems.
