0

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Tuesday, destroyed 5,000 litres of expired codeine cough syrup seized during various operations in Lagos.

This came as Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, stressed the need for collaboration from both the private and public sectors in the war against illicit drugs in Lagos, in particular, and Nigeria in general.

NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mijisola Adeyeye and Hamzat, represented by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tunji Bello, witnessed the destruction of the expired cough syrups seized by the agency at the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) headquarters Alausa, Ikeja, during the official inspection and demonstration of the agency’s mini- effluent treatment plant (ETP) used in the destruction of expired codeine.

Adeyeye, who commended Lagos state government for putting up a standard ETP to mitigate against pollution of the environment, said the 250,000 litres was just part of over 2 million litres of codeine syrups seized from various operations by the agency.

According to her: “I wish we all recall that about three and half years (31/2) years ago that Nigeria suddenly found herself faced with scourge of abuse of codeine containing syrups by some of our youths. This abuse was as a result of consumption of codeine containing syrup against off the label use of the syrups.

“NAFDAC, as a responsible called for recall of the syrup and the exercise resulted in mopping up over two and a half million bottles of codeine containing syrup from all over Nigeria by the Agency’s Pharmacovigilance and Post-Marketing Surveillance Directorate.

“These were kept on hold at the respective pharmaceutical companies. After some settlement with the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Group of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (PMGMAN), the codeine-containing syrup from all over Nigeria by the Agency’s Pharmacovigilance and Post-Marketing Surveillance Directorate.

“The next big task is taking a decision on how best to destroy this product. Three Directors of NAFDAC were put on this assignment.

“I wish to express my profound appreciation to Lagos Government for making the facility available for NAFDAC to use for this critical national assignment.”

Speaking, Sanwo-Olu, stressed the need for more collaboration with federal government and private organisations if the menace of drug abuse must be eradicated or be brought to barest minimum.

But after about 40minutes closed door session, the Senate Wednesday made a face saving move by resolving to consult the House of Representatives and their constituents before taking any action on issues raised by President Buhari in the rejected bill.

Announcing resolutions taken at the closed door session, the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, said, “The Senate in the closed session discussed how to respond to the letter from Mr. President on the electoral bill amendment.

“But provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) does not permit the upper chamber to exclusively take any action on such matters in the absence of the House of Representatives, since the later has embarked on recess.

“The Senate consequently resolved to consult with the House of Representatives in January when both the Senate and House will be in session.

“Presently, the House of Reps has gone or recess and like we all know, the constitutional provision is for the Senate and House of Representatives to jointly take the appropriate action.

“The Senate also resolved to consult with our constituents during our recess in January.

“The Senate believes that our constituents have a role to play as the major stakeholders in the laws that we make in the National Assembly.”

President Buhari had on the bill in a letter dated December 13, 2021, explained that his decision to withhold assent to the electoral bill was informed by advice from relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government after a thorough review.

According to the President, signing the bill into law would have serious adverse legal, financial, economic and security consequences on the country, particularly in view of Nigeria’s peculiarities.

He added that it would also impact negatively on the rights of citizens to participate in the government as constitutionally ensured.

OPINION: BORNO STATE A PLACE UNDER GOV ZULUM

0
Borno is a very lucky state having fought an 11year old bitter war ,went through a battery of other internal strides and yet has kept its head above the water, when other states have gone through lesser problems have been stranded.
As we click the glasses and toast to the survival of of borno after all it had gone through ,public discussion so far about the landmark achievements of the state within the two years stewardship of his excellency prof Babagana Umara Zullum have equally been very interesting .
In Borno state which strangle and struggle through a lot of menace from Boko Haram crisis, the story is that of the good ,the bad and the ugly .
The story is that of a state which limped, tottered and walked itself to a level which we are all now proud of .
We have no doubt faced barrages and crisis which shutdown our economics, stranded our people and nearly kneeled and cripple the state to its knees as we grow up but because we are one of the lost resilient and religiously organized people our state is on a verge of progress again in regarding to infrastructural developments and other social amenities.
A look at the level of our development will elicit the general satisfaction from all the sons and daughters of the state .
It’s not as if the story has been smooth all through.
The state has faced quite a lot of challenges, trials and tribulations along the way .
We have gone through rough times particularly as we fell victim of the one the world dangerous terrorist, we must however remain perpetually thankful to Allah for witnessing many millstone achievements within this two years , one of the happiest and gargantuan achievements is reconstruction of the areas affected by insurgency and successful resettlement of all the IDPs , it’s official that now the state is rid of IDP camps as the victims are happily back to their homes and begin their normal businesses .
The governor have been going dusk to dawn through the dunes and shores of the state no matter how deadliest it is ,it’s very interesting to note that peace is gradually regaining in the shores of the lake Chad .
The Borno state government under the leadership of our indefatigable governor prof Babagana Umara Zullum MNI which is busy consolidating on our democratic gains seems to be witnessing the encouraging signals of satisfaction so far from the people of the state .
I think I can described the achievements of the government so far as modest ,while other states are still grappling from absence of development . Here in Borno we are jointly savoring in an unprecedented infrastructural, educational and overall economic development.
The construction of the newly flyover set to be commissioned is one of the greatest millstone achievements that even the opposition have salute the governor on and the construction of the 17 mega schools so far across the state is also commendable.
The governor has his own errors and shortcomings just like any other human but his policies towards achieving a modern and successful Borno state can’t be denied to be standard.
I pray that peace shall reign forever in the state.
May Zulum succeed

NOPPMAN – Nigeria can generate $420m annually from onion export

The national president of the National Onion Producers, Processors And Marketers Association of Nigeria (NOPPMAN), Alhaji Aliyu Maitasamu Isah, has said Nigeria can generate $420 million annually from exportation of onion if there is value addition.

Speaking at the inauguration of the South-west geo-political zone executive of the association Monday, he said it can be made possible through the provision of enabling environment for the association in order to achieve its aims and goals in the area of contributing to the increment of Nigerian Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and creating job opportunities through effective and efficient onion production.

He said the NOPPMAN president, despite its commitment to boosting onion production in Nigeria, is facing challenges such as ” double conversion rate, shortage in production and high interest rate from the commercial banks.

“Some of the major challenges faced by the onion sub-sector include, double conversion rate, that is, the currencies of the countries that are importing our products are CFA and Cedis. But the window available for repatriation excludes these currencies,” he said.

Isah added that: “If we have to repatriate using the current window, we are going to incur losses arising from the conversion of these local currencies to dollar and then the subsequent conversion from the USD to Nigerian naira. This is a serious challenge when you consider the exchange rate at the parallel market.

Isah added that: “If we have to repatriate using the current window, we are going to incur losses arising from the conversion of these local currencies to dollar and then the subsequent conversion from the USD to Nigerian naira. This is a serious challenge when you consider the exchange rate at the parallel market.

He added that, “Shortage in production, Nigeria produces 1.4 million metric tons which fall short of its domestic demand of 2.5 million metric tons. This demand gap is largely occasioned by inability to access necessary farming inputs on a timely basis, post-harvest losses due to poor storage facility and inadequate processing plants due to lack of access to cheap credit facilities from government interventions.”

The NOPPMAN president stated further that ” the high interest rate from the commercial banks does a lot to discourage our members across the value chain. If this situation continues, with the increase in population and the fact that Nigeria export onions to other countries, this demand gap will continue to widen except there is quick and timely intervention by Lagos state government and the federal government by extension.”
