Four months of gas flaring cost Nigeria N150 billion – NOSDRA

10

Between January and April 2023, oil and gas firms doing business in Nigeria flared 92.3 million standard cubic feet of gas, or mscf, estimated to be worth N150.8 billion.

A recent report from the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) included the statistic.

In comparison to the 50.3mscf of gas flared in 2022, it represents an increase of 79.5%.

The oil-producing companies in charge of this flaring are thus anticipated to pay fines of $184.6 million (equal to N85.7 billion) for violating the regulations against gas flaring over the course of four months.

The research also said that the amount of gas flared over the course of four months emitted 4.9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide and had a 9,200 gigawatt-hour potential for power generation.

According to the study, monthly gas flared amounts were 23.2 mscf, 27.1 mscf, 25.9 mscf, and 16.1 mscf in January, February, March, and April, respectively.

Sani tweeted: “If Tinubu had chosen ‘Mr Over Sabi’ as SGF or Chief of Staff, he would have planted the germ of division between the President and the Vice President, Speak and move around as more important than the two. Tinubu successfully avoided a poisonous knife.

Tinubu signs Electricity Act 2023 into Law

0

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed the Electricity Act 2023 just 10 days after taking office.

The Electricity and Power Sector Reform Act of 2005 will be replaced by the Electricity Act.

It is anticipated that it would offer a framework to direct the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry’s (NESI) post-privatization phase and promote private sector investments.

Recall that the 9th National Assembly first became effective in July 2022

The problematic electricity industry in Nigeria is the context for the development.

The law assures that there is no longer a national monopoly on the production, transmission, and distribution of electricity in Nigeria and gives states, businesses, and private citizens the authority to do so.

According to the Act, governments may provide licenses to private investors so they can run power plants and mini-grids inside their borders. However, the Act forbids the delivery of power over state and international borders.

According to the Electricity Act of 2023, the states’ legal authority to enact legislation, establish electricity markets within those states, and control those markets would not be affected by the Nigerian electrical Regulatory Commission’s (NERC) ability to oversee the country’s electrical industry.

The Act mandates how NERC can transition regulatory responsibilities from itself to state regulators when they are established. Until a state has passed its electricity market laws, NERC will continue to regulate electricity business exclusively carried out in those states.

For now, Lagos, Edo, and Kaduna States already have electricity market laws and can start regulating their market. But for other states without such laws, NERC will regulate. NERC will still carry out cross-border regulations – generation and transmission across states will still be regulated by NERC.

The Act grants lawmakers the power to carry out oversight responsibilities and function over the NESI through its respective Committees on Power in the Senate and House of Representatives. It is to be carried out notwithstanding the supervisory powers of any government Ministry over government-owned enterprises or other entities operating in the Nigerian electricity supply industry.

Electricity generation licensees are obligated to meet renewable generation obligations as may be prescribed by NERC. Under the Act, electricity generating companies will be mandated to either generate power from renewable energy sources, purchase power generated from renewable energy or procure any instrument representing renewable energy generation.

The Electricity Act also mandates the imposition of renewable purchase obligations on distribution or supply licensees.

The Act also states that anyone may construct, own or operate an undertaking for generating electricity not exceeding 1 megawatt (MW) in aggregate at a site or an undertaking for distribution of electricity with a capacity not exceeding 100 kilowatts (KW) in aggregate at a site, or such other capacity as NERC may determine from time to time, without a license.

traditional leaders can assist you in fighting insecurity – Ooni tells Tinubu

“The foundation of this country today are the traditional rulers. We are here to pledge our loyalty and support. We want to work with you to ensure you leave a legacy.

“Don’t underestimate what traditional rulers can do”, he said.

Earlier, Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, said the visit is a normal tradition by the monarchs whenever there’s a change in leadership of the country.

He said the monarchs are people of different professions, from the military to judiciary and businessmen, who have what it takes to contribute to the betterment of the society, saying, “whenever you reach out to us, we will be here.”

The Sultan, who said the monarchs do not envy President Tinubu at this time with the numerous challenges facing the country, however, expressed confidence that with the combination of himself and Vice President Kashim Shettima, they will deliver.

He said: “We thank God for the smooth way the elections took place. Many negative people thought this country would collapse, but we are still here.

“We are here for you, for our people and our country. If you don’t reach out to us, we will reach out to you.

“We wish you the most successful tenure in good health.”

Also in attendance is Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

Traditional rulers drawn from the country’s six geo-political zones attended the event.

Nigeria’s oil industry income dropped by 60% in February to N308bn – CBN

0

In February 2023, Nigeria’s oil-related revenue dropped by 60% to N308.07 billion. According to the Monthly Economic Report, or MER, released on Thursday by the Central Bank of Nigeria, the country’s oil-related earnings decreased from N774.15 billion in January to N308.07 billion in February. Similar declines in non-oil revenue, which dropped 3.7% to N730.2 billion over the period, made the trend worse.

As a result, revenue accruing to the Federation Account in February declined 32.3 per cent in February, the report stated.

“At N1.038 trillion, federation receipts were below the level in January by 32.3 per cent. Similarly, it was below the budget of N1.580 trillion by 34.3 per cent.

“The decline relative to January was attributed to a fall in collections from Petroleum Profit Tax and Royalties. At N308.07 billion, oil revenue was 60.2 per cent below receipts in the preceding month.

“The outcome was largely driven by the 60.5 per cent decrease in collections from Petroleum Profit Tax and Royalties. Similarly, at N730.21 billion, non-oil revenue was below the level in the preceding month and the monthly target by 3.7 per cent and 7.4 per cent, respectively.

“The decrease was primarily attributed to the 10.5 per cent decline in collections from corporate tax due to the seasonality associated with its payments.

“At N478.57 billion, retained revenue of FGN was below the level in January and the proportionate budget by 7.7 per cent and 42.4 per cent, respectively.

“Provisional aggregate expenditure increased due to the rise in recurrent and capital expenditures. Consequently, the provisional aggregate expenditure of FGN at N991.62 billion rose by 5.9 per cent relative to the level in January and was 31.3 per cent below the monthly target.

“A breakdown of the expenditure reveals that recurrent expenditure, capital expenditure, and transfers accounted for 84.7 per cent, 9.5 per cent and 5.8 per cent of total expenditure, respectively.

“At N513.05 billion, the provisional fiscal deficit of the FGN rose by 22.8 per cent relative to the preceding month.

“However, it was 16.2 per cent below the budget benchmark,” the report stated.

Principals, supervisors, and others are arrested by WAEC for malpractice

0

No fewer than 20 officials, allegedly aiding and abetting examination malpractice have been arrested by the West African Examination Council, WAEC, in its ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, for school candidates.

The Council said that the arrests were made in various parts of the country.

The Head of National Office (HNO) of Council, Mr Patrick Areghan disclosed this on the sidelines of a monitoring exercise he carried out in some schools on Thursday in Lagos.

According to him, the WAEC has since handed over all the culprits to the police for prosecution.

Areghan vowed that the Council would do everything possible to ensure that their prosecution was followed to a logical conclusion.

“The issue of examination malpractice can no longer be treated with kid gloves.

“It is no longer business as usual, as it has completely eroded morals and values in our society. It is taking a dangerous dimension, which, if not tackled, will bring our country to its knees.

“Now, since the commencement of this examination, we have deployed our technology, designed to catch examination cheats, and we are happy with the results we have gotten so far.

“For instance, in Ibadan, Oyo, where we have our zonal office, which takes care of Osun, Kwara and Oyo itself, we made three arrests in a school and for the purpose of confidentiality, I will not mention the name.

“There, a supervisor at a centre, principal and invigilator were all arrested. They were arrested for allegedly snapping and posting the questions to some platforms, thereby aiding and abetting examination malpractices.’’

“Then, in Maiduguri, a supervisor and principal of a school were both arrested and handed over to the police too.

“In Umuahia, a teacher and a supervisor were arrested in a particular school and they have been handed over to the police.

“In Abeokuta, a school proprietor was the first to be caught at the beginning of this examination on May 8, snapping and posting question papers,” he said.

Areghan described the act as a monumental disgrace.

The WAEC official said that the proprietor and a supervisor had since been arrested and also handed over to the police.

He further disclosed that the same situation was also recorded at Osogbo, where a principal, invigilator and chief supervisor were arrested for the same offence.

According to him, in Kaduna, too, a supervisor and an examination official in a school who were caught in the act were arrested and handed over to the police.

He explained that the school, which was ceded to Kaduna, was supposed to be Kano but was ceded because it was closer to Kaduna.

Areghan said that the arrests would continue until the end of the examination.

He urged candidates not to allow their future to be compromised by persons who did not wish them well by promising to assist them pass their examination through illegal means, stressing that WAEC’s examinations could never be accessed illegally.

According to him, all of the culprits caught in the act may have been paid by the unsuspecting candidates and their parents, promising to assist them pass the examination.

“I want to counter this statement that some people are fond of making, which is that our examination questions always leak.

“That does not exist. Our examination is always safe and secured until they get to the candidates in the hall,” he said.

He asserted that WAEC examination questions don’t ever leak and cautioned the media to stop using the word “leak”.

“What actually happens is that, once the examination is about to start, we give the question papers to the supervisors one hour before commencement so that they can travel from the collection point to the various schools, where they will administer the examination.

“What happens?

“Immediately they get to the exam hall, they will open the pack in the name of distributing to candidates and they will snap and post to various designated platforms- WhatsApp, Instagram and others.

“Such persons are members of a syndicate group who collect money,’’ he said.

According to him, once the examination is already in progress, anyone that takes pictures of the papers and posts them will be detected.

Areghan noted that the Council had a method of detecting who snapped, who posted, who it was posted to and which candidate’s question booklet was posted.

According to him, that is when the Council swings to action by rounding all of them up and subsequently handing them over to the police.

“You have been following me around for this monitoring.

“You saw me telling these children that they will hardly have time to access any materials snapped and posted on any platforms because they are already in the hall writing the examination.

“From what we have seen so far today at the schools we visited, I will say that the examination has been going on smoothly. There has not been any challenge beyond our control.

“Of course, you will come across persons who will want to prove smart by cutting corners and trying to get things done unethically, but we have been able to beat them to it.

“There are some that we do not bother ourselves with, as we will deal with such administratively,’’ he added.

God can use Tinubu to turn Nigeria around – Pastor Chris Okafor

0

Pastor Chris Okafor, Founder, Grace Nation International has said he has huge respect for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He also said God can use the former Lagos governor to turn things around in the country

Pastor Okafor, who said ordinarily he is not a fan of the President, described him as a focused personality who refused to be moved by all manner of negative publicity against him.

Okafor spoke to journalists at his office inside the Grace Nation International, also known as the Liberation City, in Lagos State, where he insisted that he does not dabble in politics and had his reservations about the former Lagos Governor contesting for the presidency.

He said even now that Tinubu has become the president, “I still have my reservations. I would’ve preferred that he did not contest at all,” he told journalists.

Having said that, the cleric added, “I must admit I have also come to respect the man in a way. I don’t know too many men his age who can withstand what he endured before, during and after the election.”

According to him, the President was insulted, abused and called all sorts of names but he just kept his eyes on his target, which was becoming the President and continued to work towards it and even went ahead to campaign in every part of the country.

He said the President stayed calm till the end. The man of God described the president as “a strong man.”

Asked if he thinks Tinubu’s government will do well, he added that it was too early to say and as a pastor he tries very hard not to get involved in such predictions, pointing out that God works in mysterious ways and can use Tinubu to turn the country around for good, “even if a large number of Nigerians don’t like him.”

“If you recall, months before the election, I released a prophecy saying that the man most people want to win the election will not win it, it is the most despised man that will win it,” he added.
