UK ban: Nigerians blast Youtuber Emdee Tiamiyu over comment on student visa

0

Nigerians have reacted to a content creator based in the United Kingdom, Emdee Tiamiyu, over his interview with the BBC on why immigrants apply for student visas.

Recall that Tiamiyu, in an interview with the BBC, disclosed that most immigrants from Nigeria are not coming to the UK mainly because of education but as access routes to the country.

Consequently, the UK government on Tuesday slammed restrictions on student visa routes to cut net migration.

The policy banned student immigrants from Nigeria and other countries from bringing family members, except for postgraduate research routes.

The development generated mixed reactions from Nigerians and other immigrant students in the UK.

Reactions on Twitter:

@lollypeazle:

“The UK didn’t use Emdee Tiamiyu’s video to formulate that policy but will use it to defend it. They will always mention how Nigerians even share their belief by citing the video.”

@Chidozienwaigwe:

“Nigerian students in the UK are award-winning high flyers, making distinction grades, creating value & involving in developmental research. Emdee Tiamiyu painted a picture of only the -ve 1%. Many of us have put Nigeria on the map in our various institutions & we will continue.”

@danielregha:

“Emdee Tiamiyu is a mindless clown. Nigerians are already being stigmatized; our country has a negative image, but instead of correcting the wrong perceptions, he deliberately threw Nigerians under the bus for views & cheap clout. Ignorance is a disease. I hope karma visits him soon.”

@drpenking:

“For one second, just imagine that Emdee Tiamiyu were from Imo State, Anambra, Abia, Enugu, or Ebonyi. The Igbos would have suffered a massive slander in these streets by now. I can list the persons that would have been the ring leaders. Those people are very quiet now.”

@Ogbenidipo:

“The BBC needed Emdee Tiamiyu to provide content to support a certain narrative that would be ‘sold’ to the British public. Nothing he said is new to the Home Office. No one in Nigeria should be worried about how this will affect them. It won’t affect you. They needed this narrative for the British public. Period!”

NNPCL clears $3.8bn Joint Venture cash-call debts to IOCs

0

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, says it has cleared the outstanding $3.8 billion joint venture cash-call debts owed to international oil companies, IOCs, operating in the country.

NNPCL’s Executive Vice President, Upstream, Adokiye Tombomieye, disclosed this as he lamented that inadequate JV cash call funds were stunting the growth of the oil and gas industry.

Tombomieye disclosed this while speaking during a panel session on upstream opportunities at the fourth edition of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Opportunity Fair, NOGOF, 2023, organised by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, NCDMB, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

Represented by the Chief Upstream Investment Officer, NNPCL, Mr Bala Wunti, he disclosed that the country’s oil production has significantly increased following measures to tackle crude oil theft.

Tombomieye warned that the NNPCL would no longer deal with portfolio companies and urged investors to avoid acting as middlemen.

He disclosed that the company had leveraged its financial autonomy derived from the Petroleum Industry Act, PIA, to work out and execute a payment plan for the cash call debt while balancing its energy security obligations to the nation.

“This, by no small means, re-energised the JVs to recalibrate their focus towards sustaining production and increasing their spending to procure the necessary services required,” the NNPCL chief said.

Ethiopian Airlines a major shareholder in Nigeria Air – Buhari’s aide replies critics

0

President Muhammadu Buhari’s Special Assistant on Digital Communications, Bashir Ahmad has said Ethiopian Airlines is one of the major shareholders of Nigeria Air.

Ahmad said Nigerians should expect to see more Ethiopian Airlines aircraft in Nigeria Air.

Since the news of Nigeria Air aircraft arriving the country, there has been claims that it was leased from Ethiopian airlines.

The Minister of Aviation, Haji Serika was accused of using the Nigeria Air project to commit fraud.

Dismissing such claims, Ahmad tweeted: “It is never a secret that Ethiopian Airlines is one of the major shareholders/partners in the Nigeria Air Limited projects. Never! Save the cry now, and expect to see more Ethiopian Airlines aircraft branded in our national carrier’s colors.

“Like Nigeria Air, many major airlines around the world are not owned by their governments, British Airways, which IAG owns, is an example.

“This is a February story, but still very relevant and interesting — “After a lengthy selection process, the Federal Government chose Ethiopian Airlines – the continent’s consistently most successful carrier – as its strategic equity partner, with a 49% shareholding in the new company.

“The Government will hold just 5% of the new airline, with other Nigerian investors making up the remaining 46%.

“The intention is that Ethiopian will supply its managerial and organisational expertise, together with an initial batch of aircraft, for the new flag-carrier.”
