Nigeria Suffering Climate Change Effects – Buhari

1

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Tuesday, said Nigeria was already experiencing the negative fallout of climate change seen in the flooding, desert encroachment, and drought experienced in various parts of the country.

According to a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, Buhari said this at an audience he granted the former United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, on the sidelines of the First World Bio Summit 2022 in Seoul, South Korea.

The statement is titled ‘Nigeria facing climate change challenges, President Buhari declares during meeting with Ban Ki-Moon in Seoul.’

During the conversation, Buhari expressed delight with the existing cooperation between Nigeria and the Republic of Korea, especially in energy supply, citing gas exports to the Asian country.

He also described education as a critical investment in addressing unemployment and underdevelopment, calling for a closer focus on health challenges.

On his part, the former UN Chief who advocates Climate Change remediation and chairs the Ban Ki-moon Foundation for Better Future sympathised with the President over the flooding.

Ki-moon called for more investment to improve education and avert environmental degradation and preventive diseases to meet the core Sustainable Development Goals.

He thanked Buhari for attending the World Bio Summit, adding that his presence would highlight the importance of global action and cooperation in developing vaccines and technology to meet the huge threat and challenges of pandemics.

Ki-moon also noted that Nigeria is “a very important country,” having prominent citizens occupying sensitive positions in global organisations.

Therefore, he called for more people-to-people engagements and cultural cooperation between both countries even as he sought Nigeria’s support in Korea’s bid to host an EXPO in 2030.

Explaining his pet project, the ex-UN Scribe said his Global Centre on Adaptation is trying to mobilize resources to help developing countries fight climate change.

He urged donor countries to fulfil their financial commitments to the Global Climate Fund.

Buhari and his guest also discussed the role of gender equality in attaining a prosperous society while calling for an end to the war in Ukraine.

I’ll Remove Fuel Subsidy If Elected President, Says Tinubu

0

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Candidate, has promised to phase out fuel subsidy if elected as president.

In his manifesto circulated on Friday, Tinubu said aside from phasing out fuel subsidy, he would accelerate full implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act, implement additional favourable policies to attract investment in Deepwater assets within 6 months.

“We shall phase out the fuel subsidy yet maintain the underlying social contract between government and the people.

We do this by dedicating the money that would have been used on the subsidy to fund targeted infrastructural, agricultural and social welfare programs ranging from road construction to boreholes, public transportation subsidies, and education and healthcare funding programs.

In this way, the funds are more directly and better utilised to address urgent social and economic needs.

“Our planned approach will not only mitigate the price effects of deregulation but will also result in the significant expansion of public infrastructure and improvement of public well-being. Subsidy removal and deregulation are, however, only part of the solution.

To further increase our refining capacity, we shall focus on the rehabilitation of the nation’s refineries and shall consider, as a model, the joint venture partnership arrangements implemented by other leading oil-producing states and global petrochemical firms.

“We will hasten the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act and implement favourable policies to stimulate investment in the deep-water assets such as encouraging negotiations regarding signature bonus payment and/or deferral of the payment post development, royalty reliefs amongst others,” he said.

President Muhammadu Buhari has not heeded to calls by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank and other leading economists to remove fuel subsidy.

Operatives of the Ebonyi State Police Command have arrested one Nnamdi Ngwuta Obaji aka State Commander No. 3 and another member of the outlawed group, IPOB/ESN, Felix Ogudu.

In a statement signed by the police public relations officer, Chris Anyanwu, he said armed with credible intelligence, a combined team of the police, Department of State Services (DSS) and the military stormed three camps of the outlawed IPOB/ESN, including a new one under active construction located in a thick forest close to Opeke River in Omege Village of Agba Community of Ishielu LGA.

Anyanwu said the operation was prompted by pieces of reliable evidence, elicited from interrogation of the two IPOB operatives.

He said in the process of cordoning off the camps, the combined teams were ambushed by the criminal elements with sporadic shooting in their direction, adding that the team responded and engaged them in the same manner and the superior firepower of the security operatives subdued the miscreants.

He said the IPOB operatives chanted morale-boosting war songs, dived into the Opeke River and swam to different directions as they scampered for safety.

He said a good number of the IPOB members were neutralized while many escaped with bullet injuries.

Nigerian Youths Reject Call For Removal Of INEC Chairman

0

The Unified Nigerian Youth Forum ( UNYF) has described as unpatriotic the call for the removal and investigation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof.Mahmood Yakubu.

Speaking at a press conference in Kaduna on Friday, Comrade Abdulsalam Mohammed Kazeem, President of the UNYF, said on behalf of their members, they passed a vote of confidence on the INEC Chairman and his entire team for being worthy ambassadors of our nation.

He said despite the giant strides recorded by Prof. Yakubu Mahmood, especially in the area of deploying cutting-edge technology such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for credible, fair and transparent elections as well as voter mobilisation and enlightenment, some elements were busy working against him.

“It is in the public domain, the activities of certain group of persons purporting to be promoting the interest of the north and Nigeria, but sadly working for the enemies of the nation, these persons have continued to falsely accused and demand the resignation and sack of the INEC Boss for carrying out his mandate. Those behind this charade are nothing but paid agents and goons of selfish and unpatriotic politicians seeking to manipulate next year’s general elections at all cost.”

“We dispell in strong terms the rumours making rounds that the INEC Boss and his management team have morally compromised because of pressure from political parties to deactivate BVAS. For the record, please note that; BVAS and all the electoral reforms currently in place have been approved by President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC majority National Assembly. It is inconceivable to say that the APC or any political party is pressuring INEC.”

“It is again not true that INEC and indeed Prof. Yakubu Mahmood have been pressured by anybody to deactivate or stop the use of the BVAS they introduced in fulfilment of the president’s promise of delivering a transparent election. INEC is established by law and has a law guiding its activities. No individual can wake up and decide to deactivate the use of BVAS when the law says it should be deployed.”

“Those who make allegations like this are out to tarnish the reputation of the Independent National Electoral Commission and that of its indefatigable Chairman. Nigerians must not fall to such antics especially now that the general elections is at hand, Politicians are jittery and will do/say anything to make noise”

“We also want to make clear, that the allegations that INEC acted in a morally compromised way and denied some persons from the north west and north central an extended period of voter registration as a result of the network shutdown for special military operations is false and misleading.”

U.S. Embassy Warns Of Terror Attacks In Abuja

0

The United States Embassy in Abuja has alerted its personnel of a possible terror attack in the nation’s capital.

In a security alert email, the embassy warned that government buildings, places of worship, markets, law enforcement offices, and other densely populated spots might be hit in the attacks.

The embassy also said it would reduce its services until further notice.

“Event: There is an elevated risk of terror attacks in Nigeria, specifically in Abuja. Targets may include but are not limited to, government buildings, places of worship, schools, markets, shopping malls, hotels, bars, restaurants, athletic gatherings, transport terminals, law enforcement facilities, and international organisations.

The U.S. Embassy will offer reduced services until further notice,” the email read.

The embassy further advised its staff members to avoid non-essential travel and crowded gatherings and to carry proper identification.

”Avoid all non-essential travel or movement. Stay alert. Avoid crowds. Review your personal security plans and keep your cell phone charged in an emergency. Carry proper identification,” the email further read.

The police headquarters and the State Security Service did not immediately return requests seeking comments about the fears raised by the U.S. authorities.

The warning comes months after the National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) issued a similar warning about budding terror attacks said to be linked to Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP).

The FCT witnessed repeated attacks from terrorist groups in July. It began with a prison break at the Kuje facility of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) and, after that, an attack near a law school in Bwari that left about a dozen members of the elite presidential guards brigade killed.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s has continued to express his intention to decisively address insecurity, but after several years of unremarkable results, questions are being raised that threats to lives and property might be escalating across the country.

Lecturers Returning To Work In Hunger – ASUU President

0

Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has lamented over the poor condition public universities lecturers are returning to classrooms after suspension of the strike that lasted for eight months.

ASUU had been on strike from February 14 until October, one of the longest industrial actions by the union, during which the federal government withheld their salary based on “No Work No Pay” policy.

In an interview with Channels TV, Osodeke, said the strike was suspended in obedience with the law despite absence of any signed agreement between them and the federal government.

“As you can see from our press release through which we announced the suspension of the strike, we are obeying court orders, as we are a law abiding union. No agreement was signed. We hope the intervention of the Speaker of the House of Representatives will be holistic and all issues resolved as they should be.”

He further said that lecturers are not happy because they were forced to return to classrooms while they’re impoverished and owing loans.

“How can members be happy when they were practically forced to go back to work without issues trashed out and demands met? The best option for resolving issues like this is negotiation, but that was not done.

“You don’t railroad people that way. Our members will go and teach, but getting a man who is hungry, who is indebted, who is owing banks loans because his salary was not paid to be happy to teach is another thing,” he said.

Bandits Block Kaduna-Zaria Road, Kidnap Several Commuters

Suspected bandits on Thursday blocked the Kaduna-Zaria road and kidnapped several passengers.

Onyema Nwachukwu, Brigadier-General, Director of Army Public Relations, in a statement on Thursday, said the incident occurred around Foundation general area within Birnin Yero Ward.

“They opened fire on commuters, during which they abducted and fled with unconfirmed number of commuters,” he said.

He said troops pursued the criminals, compelling them to abandon five earlier abducted commuters.

He said the commuters were subsequently rescued by troops, while the highway was immediately cleared for free flow of vehicular traffic. Sadly, one of the commuters sustained a gunshot injury and was evacuated immediately for medical attention.

Expressing the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya’s appreciation, he commended the troops for their gallantry and urged them not to relent until terrorism, and other criminalities are brought to an end in the region.

According to him, the General Officer Commanding 1 Division NA, Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, has also urged all law-abiding citizens to continue to support the troops and other security agencies with credible and actionable information that will assist in the fight against the criminal elements.

Yobe State Police Command on Wednesday confirmed the arrest of a 20-year-old man, Yahaya Sai’du, who was alleged to have contracted gunmen to kill his father, Sai’du Oroh.

The command’s spokesman, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, told MAIDAWAAREWA in Damaturu that the suspect was arrested in Gujba, on Monday.

He said that the suspect allegedly hired three assailants who shot Oroh dead at his residence in Pompom village, on Aug. 20.

“Investigation revealed that the suspect paid the gunmen N350,000 to kill his father, a herdsman, just to rustle his cattle.

“Three empty bullet shells of double barrel gun were recovered at the scene and the police began the trail of the suspects immediately after the incident

“Detectives, acting on intelligence, arrested Sa’idu in Gujba town on Oct. 17, while attempting to sell 30 cows he stole from his late father,” Abdulkarim said.

The spokesman said the police were also on the trail of the remaining three suspects, assuring that they would be arrested soon.

He said that Sa’idu would face prosecution after full investigation.

We Need PDP At Federal Level For Me To Deliver In Osun – Adeleke

0

The Osun State Governor-elect, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has revealed that for him to deliver on his five point agenda to the people of the state, there is need to get a president from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the federal level.

Adeleke also stated that victory of the PDP in the Osun gubernatorial election would be incomplete unless the party delivered at the federal level.

He made this known in his remark during the inauguration of the Osun State Chapter of the Atiku Presidential Campaign Council in Osogbo on Tuesday.

Adeleke, who doubles as the Chairman of the Campaign Council, charged members to deliver Osun State to the PDP at the Presidential, National Assembly and State Assembly election.

In his words, “Our victory at the governorship election will be incomplete unless we deliver at the federal level.

“As your Governor in Osun state, I need a President of our party at the federal level to support me as I deliver our five point agenda to the good people of Osun State.

“An Atiku Presidency will strengthen our state and assist us to surmount the many challenges facing state governance.”

Adeleke posited that an Atiku presidency is necessary because the PDP presidential candidate has the most updated, relevant and responsive manifesto among all presidential contenders.

“His plan for Nigeria fits into the aspirations of Osun people for restructuring of the federation, for local government autonomy, for anti-corruption, for better infrastructure, for national unity in diversity and for good governance.

“Our votes must go for Atiku Abubakar because he is the most tested and trusted with sterling records of performance in and out of government.

“A combination of Atiku Abubakar and Dr Okowa at the presidency will take Nigeria to a prosperous level locally and internationally.”

He called on the campaign council members to mobilise the people in order for the party to obtain bigger margins during the 2023 general elections.

Court Nullifies Two APC Primary Elections In Yobe

0

A Federal High Court sitting in Damaturu, Yobe State, today nullified primary elections of the All Progressives Congress, APC, for Fika East and Jakusko State constituencies for non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

Justice Fadima Murtala Aminu, who gave the judgement, ordered the APC to conduct fresh primaries for the two seats within 14 days.

Justice Aminu also warned the party not to tamper with the list of the authentic delegates sent to INEC.

MAIDAWAAREWAA had earlier reported that the court also dismissed the case of Abubakar Jinjiri vs Bashir Machina and APC after the plaintiff withdrew the suit against the two defendants.
